Fiercely independent journalist Mandy Matney has been investigating the Murdaugh family since that fateful February night in 2019. In 2021, the double homicides of Alex Murdaugh's son Paul Murdaugh and his wife Maggie Murdaugh launched this tangled web of crime and corruption into the international spotlight. The now-infamous Murdaugh name is attached to the tragic 2019 death of Mallory Beach for which Paul Murdaugh was indicted, a litany of financial crimes perpetrated against legal clients for which Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to 40 years in prison, the 2015 unsolved homicide of Stephen Smith, the 2018 death of Gloria Satterfield and stolen insurance settlements, a staged suicide-for-hire plot, countless civil lawsuits, horrendous lawyers, and convicted co-conspirators Cory Fleming and Russell Laffitte that pleaded guilty to helping Alex steal over $10,000,000+ from clients for years. While family patriarch Alex Murdaugh was convicted of Paul & Maggie’s murders in 2023, that conviction was overturned on appeal in 2026, and he awaits a new trial date to be scheduled as of June 2026. He remains in prison on state and federal financial crimes for which he pleaded guilty. Interviews with outside experts in the legal system who are fighting the good fight in an imperfect system is so helpful in understanding the issues you confront. And also oddly encouraging to hear from people in the system upholding the law in trying times and to know you are not alone.
