Fantasy, Lore, & More: Splinters of the Soul

Hi, I’m indie fantasy author, Melinda Kucsera, and in this episode, N.R.Farias joined me to talk about her fantasy book, Splinters of the Soul. What’s it about? When Brazilian engineering student Marie leaves the slums of her hometown for a coveted internship in Germany, she believes she’s just choosing her career. Instead, she uncovers a truth long buried: witches are real, and she was meant to be one of them. But her magic never awakened. Now, an entire world is paying the price.Sapiendra, a hidden island bound to Marie’s witchcraft, is collapsing. Its magic perishes, its defenses crumble, and siphons invade, consuming what little remains. And they won’t stop there. Her island isn’t the only thing in danger. In the human world, witches are being hunted. To save her island and stop those hunting her kind, Marie must reclaim her magic and confront memories shaped to break her. Because the deeper she digs, the clearer it becomes: Her power was not lost. It was locked away. And whoever did it is still coming for her. My newsletter is free and is the best way to stay up-to-date on what I am writing and what the characters are doing since they control it. Sarn’s son from the Curse Breaker Series (Ran) runs the newsletter. Sign up for that on Substack: https://www.melinda-kucsera.com/embed To read the archives going back to 2017 when the newsletter first started, head over to my blog on my website: https://melindakucsera.com/blog/ All previous newsletters are free to read, and I maintain a continuous archive on my blog by adding new issues as they release. There are a few issues that I had to take down because I wrote two full novels in the newsletter, which were later released as novels, and Amazon would not let me publish the books even though they were not in Kindle Unlimited until I unpublished those issues. Other than that, it’s a complete record.

Fantasy, Lore, & More: Brightest Burning

Hi, I’m indie fantasy author, Melinda Kucsera, and in this episode, Krishna D. Patel joined me to talk about his fantasy book, Brightest Burning. What’s it about? For fans of multi-POV political conspiracy, this epic fantasy features a rules-based, dual magic system with a brutal physical toll, a slow-burn romance, and a "chosen one" epic turned whodunit. The prophecy had a savior. Zeta killed her.Sampi was the “Brightest Born,” the golden child destined to defend the island nation of Aios. Now she is dead, and Zeta, her fellow soldier, sits in a cell awaiting execution for her murder. Zeta claims it was an accident. The government calls it treason. But with the Chosen One gone, the ruthless colonialist X’Os empire is poised to strike, threatening to eradicate Aios’ magic, religion, and freedom. On the eve of her execution, Zeta is offered a shady backroom deal: her life in exchange for smuggling a priceless artifact off the island.A disparate group of outcasts must expose the truth behind the savior's death before the empire closes in. Each perspective is needed to unearth a crucial piece of the puzzle: a fugitive soldier fleeing her own guilt, a brooding rebel hunting rare magic, a cynical sapphic journalist fighting imperial propaganda, a deadly assassin bound by a fatal blood pact, and a patriotic captain torn between duty and state-sanctioned violence. In a world where magic comes with conditions, this found family must solve the murder before an invasion strikes, and the erasure of ancient, vanished gods dooms them all. Fantasy, Lore, & More: The Plague Doctor & The Littlest Sister

Hi, I’m indie fantasy author, Melinda Kucsera, and in this episode, Carolina Cardona joined me to talk about his fantasy book, The Plague Doctor & The Littlest Sister. What’s it about? The Plague Doctor & the Littlest Sister is a cozy gothic medieval fantasy about Agnes, an inexplicably plague-resistant nine-year-old nun who joins three exhausted plague doctors attempting to fight the Black Death with the very limited medical knowledge available to them. What begins with herbs, dubious medieval remedies and a mysterious blue medicine, gradually expands into a story involving an ancient woodland being, a disgraced Templar knight, a convent with secrets, and questions none of them, not the physicians, the Church, nor even the supernatural beings who inhabit the forest, can completely answer. At its heart, however, this is a found-family story about people continuing to care for one another in one of the most hopeless moments in human history. Fantasy, Lore, & More: The Shadow Sisters

Hi, I’m indie fantasy author, Melinda Kucsera, and in this episode, Matthew Cesca joined me to talk about his fantasy book, The Shadow Sisters. What’s it about? A life of lies and betrayal. Anjia has trained her entire life to become a Sister of the Temple of Kyrsma, Goddess of Love and Light. She knows one of two fates await her on Ascension Day, a life of service or a gruesome death. But as the day of her ascension comes and she is sworn to the temple, her life is no longer her own. A terrible truth is revealed to her — the temple is corrupted by the shadow demon, Khimital. And with her ascension, Anjia is now bound to it. Along with the other sisters of the Temple, Anjia is forced to work as an assassin for the Khimital, whose only desire is to spread darkness in the world once strong with Kyrsma’s light. With each mission, the sisters perform unspeakable acts that darken their souls. Defiance is met with dominance as each sister learns that having the Khimital’s influence take control of their bodies is worse than carrying out these deadly deeds on their own. The Khimital is not without benevolence though. With each mission completed, the Khimital offers new powers and mastery of the shadows. Anjia must accept this new life that was thrust upon her and the sins she must commit in the Khimital’s name. The longer Anjia is forced to serve, the deadlier she becomes. And the more power the Khimital gives her, the more she begins to embrace this new destiny… Where to get the book: https://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Sisters-Matthew-Cesca-ebook/dp/B0FP9QX6QG https://matthew-cesca-shop.fourthwall.com/products/signed-copy-of-the-shadow-sisters-paperback https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-shadow-sisters-matthew-cesca/1148428439 Where to find our guest: Website: www.mattcesca.com @authormattcesca on Tiktok, Instagram, & Threads Where to find your host: Melinda’s website: https://melindakucsera.com/ Melinda’s Substack: https://www.melinda-kucsera.com/embed

Fantasy, Lore, & More: The Path of Frozen Fire

Hi, I’m indie fantasy author, Melinda Kucsera, and in this episode, Matt Langford joined me to talk about his fantasy book, The Path of Frozen Fire. What’s it about? The Path has never allowed anyone to return... For generations, the ashen of Promised Vale have survived by sending one champion each year up the Path. At the summit, above the cloudline, waits the Devourer, a monster no village champion has ever defeated. If no one ascends, it comes down to feast. Riven has spent his life serving the Keepers who enforce this law. As captain of the village guardians, he protects Promised Vale from the scalehound packs that hunt beyond its walls and carries out the Keepers’ orders to preserve the village’s peace and prosperity. He has never questioned the sacred oaths that bind him to their command. But, on his wedding day, the Keepers halt the ceremony and name his bride as the next champion. Riven is ordered to stand aside as his beloved is sent up the Path, never to return. To resist the Keepers would mean betraying his rank, defying the men under his command, and breaking the sacred oaths that have shaped his life. To obey would mean surrendering her to the Devourer. Now Riven is forced to choose between remaining faithful to the village he has sworn to protect, or abandoning everything to follow her up the Path of Frozen Fire.
