UPDATE: Listening to season 2 on the Seewen murders. In the second episode there’s so much great detail. The character of Eugen (German spelling) is so well-drawn. The research is meticulous and the narration has momentum, so it has a “you are there” quality. Like last season, the contrast between the bucolic Swiss setting and a grisly murder is fascinating.
This podcast reflects the host’s deep personal interest in the story, but also benefits from his experience as a documentary filmmaker. There are many intriguing details: two teen girls on a bicycle tour through a Swiss village, a youth hostel, a crossroads, and the crystal caves. The case is now old and there remain a number of theories about who committed the murders. The host, Mr. Isler, seeks out witnesses and gets some interviews. His investigative drive brings the podcast to life. The story is told with precision. Isler does not take anything at face value, and evaluates the police work as well as a reenactment by a television show. The podcast is an easy listen for English speakers, but retains a local Swiss character (this is unusual). On the website, there are well-selected photos for each episode which are helpful. This pod reminds me of an earlier time when podcasts were more personal and fresh. It is original and well-crafted; I recommend it highly.
