EP 138: The Wrench Story This EOS Implementer Uses to Explain Every Leadership Blind Spot with Marc Doig

A grown man once told a room full of strangers that a single moment fetching the wrong wrench for his dad convinced him, for the next 30 years, that he wasn't good enough. My guest this week, Marc Doig, tells that story to explain why the blind spots that run a business are almost never about strategy — they're personal, and they run deep. Marc is a Professional EOS Implementer with Integrity Momentum Group, helping leadership teams get clear, get aligned, and get traction using the Entrepreneurial Operating System. Before EOS, he spent decades as an agency partner in the food and grocery world — taking brands from a napkin sketch to 30,000 grocery stores — and helping a fire protection company capture 50% market share in a new market. A childhood friend from his rodeo days pulled him into EOS almost by accident, after Marc referred a couple of struggling clients his way and watched what happened next. We get into what EOS actually is (Vision, Traction, Healthy — it's simpler than it sounds), why ego is the single biggest thing standing between a leader and the next level, the "right people, right seats" tool that changes how teams get built, and the soccer analogy that makes it click instantly. If you've ever suspected the thing holding your business back is something you can't quite see, this one's for you. Key topics Growing up on a ranch and the customer-service story that started it all — ~00:17:40How a childhood rodeo friendship led to a career in EOS — ~00:28:00What EOS actually is: Vision, Traction, Healthy — ~00:29:45The People Analyzer and getting the right people in the right seats — ~00:36:00The wrench story: how a childhood moment can quietly run a 40-year-old's life — ~00:37:00The soccer analogy: why a great goalie looks terrible playing striker — ~00:38:50Guest bio Marc Doig is a Professional EOS Implementer who works with entrepreneurs and leadership teams to help them gain clarity, alignment, accountability, and traction. With more than 30 years alongside founders and businesses, Marc brings firsthand experience building and operating businesses, leading teams, and helping companies scale. His unique perspective was shaped growing up on a ranch, riding bulls and buckin' horses — learning early about hard work, responsibility, resilience, and getting back in the saddle. His business experience includes taking a food company from concept to more than 30,000 locations, helping a fire protection company grow from zero to 50% market share, guiding the current largest health and wellness brand out of bankruptcy, and helping small local brands become national forces. Marc brings a practical, relational approach to helping leaders build healthy businesses that work. He's lived it. EP: 137, The People Crushing It With AI Aren't Who You Think with Dan Kite

I thought I knew who was winning with AI right now. I was wrong. In this episode I sit down with Dan Kite, founder of Workuity and the Center for AI Excellence in Phoenix, and this one changed how I think about the AI conversation entirely. Dan's built eight businesses — from Blockbuster video stores to co-working spaces — and for a while, he was convinced AI was going to crush small business owners like the ones who fill his space every day. Then something shifted. We get into why the people getting the most out of AI right now aren't the young, tech-fluent crowd everyone assumes — it's business owners in their 40s and 50s who already know their craft. We talk about the trap of overcommitting, why building your own CRM with AI is usually the wrong move, and the exact moment Dan knew it was time to walk away from a business that wasn't working anymore. If you've been sitting on the sidelines of AI because it feels overwhelming, or you're a founder wondering when to hold on and when to let go, this conversation is for you. Take the Pipeline Power Score and find out where your revenue is leaking — link below. Key topics: •  Why AI amplifies your existing skills instead of replacing them — ~00:14:00 •  Finding your business “superpower” with CliftonStrengths — ~00:22:00 •  The demographic surprise in who's actually winning with AI — ~00:29:00 •  The turning point: from AI doomer to Center for AI Excellence founder — ~00:56:00 •  Knowing when to exit a business vs. when to lean in — ~00:41:00 Guest bio  Dan Kite is the CEO and founder of Workuity, a co-working company with locations in the Biltmore and Chandler areas of Phoenix, which he opened roughly nine years ago. This is his eighth business — he previously built and sold a chain of Blockbuster video stores, ran a chain of computing centers called Screens, was a partner in one of Chicago's biggest small business brokerages, and worked in wealth management. After initially believing AI would devastate small business, Dan pivoted to launch Workuity's Center for AI Excellence, which now runs weekly AI workshops, exchanges, and hackathons for the Phoenix small business community. EP 136: How Bodybuilding Didn't Just Change His Body, It Saved His Life with Ben Lawson

Ben Lawson was 29, about six months off a bodybuilding show, and roughly as healthy as a person gets. Then he went to the ER because something felt off, and a doctor walked in and told him he had acute myeloid leukemia. Eight days later, most of what he'd spent twelve years building was gone. Ben founded Lift & Lead Co, and he's been on this show before. This time he came back with a different business and a much better reason for running it. We got into why he walked away from coaching entirely at the end of 2024, what he did in the year he spent selling real estate, and how he rebuilt the whole thing for the third time. The line that stuck with me: you're choosing hard either way. The easy setting is also hard, you just haven't felt it yet. Being out of breath at the top of the stairs is hard. Not being able to pick up your kids is hard. Pick which hard you want. You'll get how he doubled his audience in eight months after seven flat years, the decision-making rule that got him into a gym during chemo, and why he thinks trust with other people starts with keeping the commitments you make to yourself. If your pipeline is leaking somewhere and you can't name where, take the free Pipeline Power Score: https://capitallystpro.com/pipeline-power Key topics From a basement weight set to coaching for a living — 00:01:20Burnout, real estate, and the rebrand to Lift & Lead Co — 00:04:46Balancing energy instead of balancing time — 00:10:24The leukemia diagnosis at 29 — 00:13:24Seven years to 15,000 followers, eight months to double it — 00:23:11Choose your hard — 00:30:37Why trust has to start with yourself — 00:34:27Guest bio  Ben Lawson founded Lift & Lead Co, an online coaching business built for dads who want to be in shape without giving up their evenings. He grew up in a town too small to have a gym, started lifting on an old weight set in a basement, spent four years in the military, and launched his first online coaching program while still enlisted. He has competed as an amateur bodybuilder, coached thousands of clients including several who went pro, and was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at 29 — then competed again within two years. He also leads the fitness pillar of the Abundant Man Project. EP 135: The Box Full of Risk Every Developer Hands Their Contractor with Tarik Williams

When a developer hands you a $10 million project, they're not just handing you money — they're handing you a box full of risk and trusting you not to open it. That's how Tarik Williams, President of TLW Construction, describes the job. Tarik's dad, Ted, founded TLW in the early 1980s building a project or two a year by hand. Tarik joined in 2002 ready to conquer the industry — and then the recession hit everything he touched. He calls it his Midas touch turning to dust, and it forced a complete rebuild of how TLW does business: less trade-show marketing, a lot more genuine care for every client, no matter how small. We get into how that mindset shift, plus a five-year, all-in bet on construction management software, let TLW scale to over 30 employees and 20+ million square feet built across five states — with California next, even while everyone else is talking about leaving. Tarik also opens up about running a family business, and the one rule that keeps Thanksgiving dinner from turning into a board meeting. If you've ever wondered what it actually takes for a developer to trust you with their business, this one's for you. Key topics Building a construction company from paper ledgers to Procore — 00:31:20The recession and the "Midas touch" wake-up call — 00:18:32The $10 million box of risk — 00:25:24Family business boundaries — no politics, no religion, no business — 00:15:08Why TLW is expanding into California when everyone else is leaving — 00:38:36Taking on the industry's hardest, most complex builds — 00:46:39Guest bio Tarik Williams is President of TLW Construction, a commercial general contractor his father, Ted Williams, founded in the early 1980s. Tarik joined the company in 2002 after earning a Construction Management degree from ASU, and has helped grow TLW to over 30 employees and more than 20 million square feet of commercial projects built across five states — with a sixth, California, just added this week. TLW specializes in complex commercial builds, from multi-story storage facilities to tilt-up concrete and multifamily projects, and now operates under new ownership alongside three longtime partners following Ted's retirement.
