All About Accountability with Gwen Bortner

In this episode Alison speaks with Gwen Bortner, founder of Everyday Effectiveness, about accountability and how it supports business results. They discuss her background in consulting across different industries and how that experience shaped her approach to helping entrepreneurs and organizations improve effectiveness. More importantly, they explore how accountability differs from simple task checking. Gwen defines it as an actual conversation that includes reflection and problem solving, rather than just asking whether something was done. They also discuss why accountability can be difficult, including the fact that it often requires uncomfortable questions and honest self-examination. Alison and Gwen look at accountability in the context of client experience and coaching. They talk about whether business processes are truly serving clients or simply making things easier for the business, and how weekly asynchronous written check-ins can help clients see their progress over time. Gwen identifies three elements that make accountability work: consistency, focus, and feedback. They cover the value of narrowing attention to one to three priorities, and discuss how changing questions from “why” to “what” can reduce defensiveness and lead to better problem solving. She also notes the importance of reviewing what has gone right, not only what needs to change, so that effective patterns can be repeated. Building Safe Visibility with Lillian Sue

In this episode, Alison has a fascinating conversation with Lillian Sue, a PR expert dedicated to helping entrepreneurs, authors, and coaches gain the visibility they need to thrive in their respective industries. Lillian shares her extensive background as a publicity coach and PR specialist. She explains how she equips her clients with the tools needed to create effective media campaigns. With resources like media lists, templates, and strategies for safe visibility, she simplifies the often overwhelming world of publicity. One of the key points of their discussion is the notion that getting media coverage is just the first step. It's not enough to simply appear in front of audiences; what truly matters is how to transform that exposure into meaningful connections and results. Alison and Lillian dive into the misconception many new business owners have about market saturation and visibility. Lillian emphatically states that no market is truly oversaturated; rather, it’s about finding your unique voice amidst the noise. This is where authentic storytelling comes into play. She encourages clients to be transparent and genuine in sharing their narratives, as this authenticity builds trust and connection with potential audiences. A major thread in the conversation is the transformation of media consumption—from social media noise to the revival of traditional channels like magazines. Lillian notes that while many entrepreneurs think social media should be their primary focus, they often overlook the value of speaking engagements and being featured in niche publications. She emphasizes that media is not just about broad reach but about being seen as an authority in areas relevant to one's audience. They also discuss the increasing role of AI in our lives and its impact on publicity strategies. Lillian asserts that the foundation of content—real human connections and storytelling—remains irreplaceable. She points out that despite technological advancements, the authenticity of personal experience is what resonates with audiences.
