    When the Unthinkable Happens: Choosing Love After Loss | Mindy Corporon | Hilary Burns | S8EP5

    What do you do when the unthinkable happens? Mindy Corporon's father and 14-year-old son were murdered in a hate crime. In an instant, her life was shattered. In this deeply moving conversation, Mindy doesn't tell us how to “get over” grief. She tells us to grieve. Pour out the tears. Let them come. For a time after the murders, Mindy describes moving through life as if she were walking through molasses. Healing didn't happen quickly or neatly. EMDR eventually helped her detach from some of the trauma, but she emphasizes that there is no single right way to grieve. We each move through loss differently. And sometimes healing begins by simply saying yes when someone offers to help. After the murders, women came to “man the house” taking care of ordinary things when ordinary life had become almost impossible. Mindy shares practical ways we can show up for someone who is grieving: bring food and containers, stock paper products, walk the dog, watch the children, or simply take care of something that doesn't require the grieving person to make another decision. Today, Mindy has chosen to respond to hatred with love, faith and courageous kindness. Through her work, her book Healing a Shattered Soul, and a new Grief Leadership program she is developing, she is helping others navigate loss while also teaching the rest of us how to show up for people who are hurting. This is a difficult conversation. It's also a profoundly hopeful one. Grief doesn't have to be hidden. Tears don't have to be stopped. And we don't have to walk through loss alone. I really like this because Mindy's practical wisdom is the story, while the horror of what happened provides the context. You're not using the tragedy to sell the episode. And I deliberately did not use language like “she turned tragedy into triumph.” I think that would cheapen what you just experienced with her. She didn't make what happened okay. She found a way to live, love, grieve, and serve in the presence of what happened.     A study in the 1970's showed a shocking truth about health. Rabbits were studied for the impact of high fat in their diets. 60% of the rabbits were healthier which did not support the research.  After digging into what happened, they found that the person administering to those rabbits was an animal lover. She held them, talked to them lovingly, and this created healthier rabbits. Dr. Lauren Hartman is a pediatrician and adolescent specialist. She has had many young patients with eating disorders. She has seen the impact of this disease on their psychological, physical and emotional health. She is determined to change the narrative for this generation so that our children can grow up in a new paradigm for body image, eating, and self image. Our conversation was informative, emotional, and eye-opening.     Cristy Abbott was always connected to the earth. As a young girl, running through the fields was her escape from an abusive family life. After having a baby in high school, Cristy focused on raising her daughter. She composted and always had a garden.At around age 40, Cristy screamed out loud, WHAT IS MY PURPOSE? Six years later it came to her loud and clear: Work harmoniously with nature - we are all connected.Through synchronicities, Cristy was introduced to permaculture - permanent agriculture. She got certified and started teaching it to others. Her original book study group grew from 4 people to 400 in Florida. She led many projects in the St. Petersburg area. Cristy is passionate about our ecosystems and regenerating our soil. We are stewards of the earth, she says. Cristy currently volunteers at Sweetwater Organic Community Farm - a nonprofit, community supported urban organic farm and environmental education center in Tampa, FL. She is passionate about educating people on the topics of biodiversity and the relationships between soil, plants, animals, and planetary patterns as they relate to the process of farming.Cristy has been involved in developing and operating many large and small-scale community gardens and farms, and is passionate about community building and cooperative housing.
