Ep 6: Can anyone sing? The myth of the natural talent

Ever heard someone refer to themselves as 'tone deaf'? Ever told someone they can't sing? (I hope not!) Ever thought you're stuck with the voice you were born with? Let's talk about why it's so important to relearn and reframe this thinking and start encouraging our teams and churches that they CAN sing.

Ep 5: An overview of the 5 vocal registers

Vocal registers is a huge topic! In today's episode I try to condense some of this down into an overview of the 5 vocal registers, focusing more specifically on chest voice and head voice, and touching on the concept of blending these 2 registers into mixed voice. The 5 vocal registers (labelled due to the different vibratory patterns of the vocal cords) are: 1. Vocal Fry 2. Chest Voice 3. Head Voice 4. Falsetto 5. Whistle tone Did you find this episode useful? I'd really appreciate your feedback, questions and comments. Ep 4: Breathing for singing - why you should ignore the diaphragm!

Many singers know that breathing is important for singing, but have no idea what to do or where to start. In today's episode I briefly discuss why I see breathing as both foundational for singing....and also not as important as we think. Have you ever been told to breathe into the diaphragm, or sing from the diaphragm? I also discuss why I don't teach either of these things, and actually prefer you not to think about the diaphragm at all when you approach your vocal training! Ep 3: Worship Singer's Question - Octave jumps in worship songs

Today's podcast is taken from a blogpost I wrote last week in response to a question about octave jumps. John Grummit (jgsongs.com) joined the Worship Singers community and asked this question: Hi Amy... just arrived here and the very first video I watched was the one which you introduce by saying "those pesky songs that jump an octave." I'm curious about your take on this as a vocal coach. Should us songwriters be writing/recording octave jumps into our songs for gathered worship? In this podcast I share with you my response to John's question which takes you through 3 considerations for how to sing a song with an octave jump, and 2 considerations for christian songwriters who might be considering adding an octave jump to their material. Ep 2: The 3 stages of singing

The first thing I always cover with any new singing student - the three stages of singing. Understanding this is the foundation of getting to know your vocal instrument and how to use it well - each of these stages informs the others and we could go into tons more details on each component - but for now here's an overview of the three stages of singing; what they are and why they're important! For more training like this come over and join Worship Singers Facebook Group, where I give a free training once a month and free resources in between to help equip you to sing skilfully and lead confidently as a worship singer, all for God's glory.
