Living the Mission of Movement & Sobriety: An Interview with Ashlynn Howe

Ashlynn describes herself as someone with an “inner restlessness.” That restlessness kept her moving, achieving, and functioning through years of alcohol abuse. As she began her career and appeared to be managing her life well out the outside to most, her inner life said otherwise. Turmoil was mounting. Everything felt chaotic. She knew her relationship with alcohol was different than it was for others, but despite her best efforts, it felt impossible to control. Eventually, with the support of family and friends, Ashlynn sought help. Her long list of reasons why she wouldn't fit in a recovery group evaporated in the first few meetings. Listening to the stories of others in a similar experience, she felt seen and understood. She felt like she belonged. This sense of belonging was happening elsewhere, too - in a fitness studio. In her recovery process, Ashlynn had been taking fitness class. It wasn't long before she was teaching fitness classes. She quickly saw the need for recovery programs in the fitness space and fitness classes in the recovery space, and COVID gave her the perfect opportunity to pioneer the fusion. She began livestreaming The Recovery Barre classes once a week. The premise was simple: brief recovery meeting followed by a free, simplified barre and Pilates class. Last November, on her 8 year anniversary of sobriety, Ashlynn launched The Recovery Barre as a nonprofit. Less than a year later, The Recovery Barre has active meetings in Michigan, North Carolina, and Florida, providing a free community resource that blends recovery support with movement for anyone in or around sobriety. Ashlynn shares about her faith, her sobriety, the signals that tell her to slow down, and the practices that keep her living on mission. This episode is for the sober curious, those in recovery, and anyone impacted by substance use. Listen in and be encouraged. Opening the Heart to Healing: An Interview with Nora Poling

Nora had a unique childhood. The child of physicists, she and her siblings were raised in a home where knowledge was priority and feelings weren't tolerated. Still, Nora is grateful to have acquired a zeal for knowledge, and even from an early age, the one thing she wanted to know most about was God. She sought Him on her own and found Him, but her faith in the years to come would be tested in many ways.  Nora's faith journey includes stories as unique as her childhood - leaving a cult, family abuse, plane crashes and tragic deaths, just to name a few. As Nora shares, she handled some of this pain by closing her heart to it and "going inside of herself". But ultimately, her desire to know God led her back to scripture. She discovered that Christ died for her sins AND for the wounds of her heart, that when she wept, He wept, too. Healing took awhile, but she finally opened her heart to it. Over the previous 19 years, Nora has taught men, women and children in ten countries and four continents about the effects of trauma and abuse, and the hope and healing that only comes from Jesus. She calls her lesson 'The 6 Hearts', and it's brought many the hope and healing of salvation.  Nora is the mother of 3, grandmother of 7, great grandmother of 3, and she's “Mama Nora” to countless others to whom she has ministered. Her faithfulness is powerful. Listen to her story and be encouraged. Connect with Nora by email: nbpoling@gmail.com.
