    Episode 4 - Fyre Festival

    This week, Lead Detective Holly takes us back to more recent days & investigates the 2017 Fyre Festival disaster. We also tackle electric blankets & whether you’ll electrocute yourself if you wee. Holly’s red flag is sinister as hell: spooky thieves are afoot. Fyre Festival background & premonitions 12:23 - 28:38 Detective Holly finds out what Constable Meg already knows about the failed Fyre Festival. Did Billy McFarland have a Segway? We don’t find out.     Episode 3 - Jack The Ripper

    This week, Lead Detective Meg is back in the driver’s seat with a deep dive into Jack the Ripper and whether we should have predicted the atrocities he committed. Content warning: some dark murder stuff in this one, so listen with caution. Introduction and red flags of the week 0:00 - 19:16 Lead Detective Meg and Dumb Constable Holly talk about friend crushes, true crime and Cranium. Plus, Meg has a Netflix-related red flag, someone eats a ladybird and the two-year-olds are taking over. This segment was trash, dump it.  Jack the Ripper background 19:16 - 20:40 There’s some confusion here about how far back we’re heading in the Time Machine - but basically, it’s 1887 and Jack’s on the loose. Red Flag 1: Social climate 20:40 - 26:00 The Cockney Constable is back, we’re afraid to say, and he’s eager to please. Holly’s sets the scene, and there are little boy shoe shiners around. Meg steps in with the stats and gives us an idea of Victorian London’s history, including brutal police and civil unrest. Red flag 2: Overcrowding 26:00 - 31:20 The Lead Detective shares her findings on the population of Whitechapel. Homelessness is rife and people are paying to sleep in coffins or hang over a rope - bleak times. Is the perp The Man?  Red flag 3: Was there more than one Jack the Ripper? 31:20 - 37:07 Meg sees some things she can’t unsee as she dives deeper into Jack’s evil. The two detectives explore whether grizzly crimes against women were on the rise and whether killers were inspiring each other. Things could be more chaotic than they seem. Red flag 4: Alcoholism in Victorian London 37:07 - 45:55 This section is sponsored by zero beers. (We wish.) Holly has some thoughts about gin, but we don’t really understand them. Meg paints a grim picture of what it was like to be a woman in the 1800s. Don’t drink methylated spirits, kids. Red flag 5: Needle in a haystack 45:55 - 49:49 There are SO many people in Whitechapel, so finding Jack was going to be tough. Meg goes into some vague details of the murders here, and the situation was very grim. The detectives try and dig into who the killer might have been.  Red flag 6: Jack the Ripper motives & opportunities 49:49 - 55:12 Detective Meg explains how dangerous the situation was for sex workers and homeless people, and questions whether the killer was opportunistic. Did he have mummy issues? Or was he a raving lunatic? Or both? Probably both. Red flag 7: Police investigation into Jack the Ripper 55:12 - 1:01:49 Meg is angry. Why couldn’t the police have catfished Jack the Ripper? Holly gets delirious and wonders why the police weren’t focussed on protection. Something smells fishy. The detectives ask if they are the bad guys here.  Constable’s conclusions & lessons learned 1:01:49 - 1:03:20 The perp is pretty clear here. Take us away, we really f*cked up this time, gov.     Episode 2 - Kony 2012

    This week, Holly takes the role of Lead Detective & the Time Machine sets sail(?) for a more recent past: 2012. Dumb Constable Meg joins her on a voyage of discovery as they work out why we all became obsessed with the Kony 2012 campaign. Introduction & Red Flags of the week 0:00 -14:37 Meg & Holly start by returning to the present, where the weather is cold enough to threaten the functionality of the Time Machine itself. That’s the big red flag this week. But don’t worry, these trusty detectives won’t let freezing temperatures stop them. Meanwhile, glasses of wine are poured and 2012 memories are shared. Plus: dodgy politics, a One Direction anecdote and teenage fringe nightmares. Kony 2012 background & premonitions 14:37 - 22:30 Meg has high expectations of the power of pre-teens. Can they defeat Kony through the power of song? Let’s find out. The detectives discuss their memories of the Kony video’s release and a (loose) timeline is established. They also make it clear that Kony was, like, a totally evil guy & give a bit of background to the Lord’s Resistance Army. Red Flag 1: Kony 2012 branding 22:30 - 29:03 Holly delves into the branding of the Kony campaign. Did the marketing team go too hard? Is it possible to bite off more than you can chew when trying to bring down an evil dictator? & what role did social media have to play? The detectives talk all things YouTube. Also, Baby Shark makes an appearance. Red Flag 2: Star of the show 29:03 - 36:19 The detectives discuss Jason Russell, & whether he intended to put himself at the centre of the drama. Somehow, there’s also some placenta talk here. Holly unearths a Kony Musical. Red Flag 3: Slacktivism 36:19 - 40:31 Is activism always a good thing? The detectives discuss white saviourism & the things people do to make themselves feel good. Plus, Holly checks out the Hague’s knowledge of Kony’s crimes prior to 2012. Red Flag 4: Dodgy geography 40:31 - 45:22 The detectives make some shocking discoveries about where Kony actually was in 2012. Was Jason fact-checking his information? Or was he just obsessed with fonts? Some hypocrisy is also unearthed closer to home. Red Flag 5: Kony 2012 target demographic 45:22 - 50:01 Can the teens catch a break around here?     Episode 1 - Titanic

    This week, Meg takes the role of Lead Detective as she & Dumb Constable Holly zoom back 114 years in the Time Machine as the building of the Titanic begins. Introduction & Red Flags of the week (0:00-13:40) Meg & Holly introduce themselves and rev up the Time Machine - but in the meantime they talk red flags. Meg’s been spooked by a mysterious figure in the night time while Holly has an understandable aversion to Matt Hancock. Titanic background (13:40-17:08) The two detectives arrive in Belfast in 1909 to find work being done on the new Titanic vessel. It’s a vessel, not a ship, dumbo. All looks well at the moment - but who or what causes everything to go wrong? Let’s find this perp! Red flag 1: Titanic bulk heads (17:08-23:45) Chief Inspector Meg questions the Dumb Constable on what a bulk head is and how it may have contributed to the Titanic’s downfall. Red flag 2: Titanic lifeboats (23:45-32:09) A perp starts to become more clear as the trusty crime fighters dig deeper into White Star. Meanwhile, were primary school children forced to tread water in their pyjamas for 2 hours? Holly questions her past. Red flag 3: Titanic binoculars (32:09-36:57) Should women have jobs? These old school 1912 detectives ask the tough questions. And, more importantly, what was the deal with the Titanic’s binoculars? Red flag 4: Raging Coal Fire (36:57-41:45) The Dumb Constable turns Australian as things start to get loose. Did you know there was a raging coal fire in the bowels of the Titanic? Could this have contributed to its untimely sinking? Red flag 5: Titanic radio operators (41:45-49:02) The radio operators are tapping away just trying to do their jobs over here. But a few unfortunate circumstances cause them to miss key information. The detectives uncover more and find a potential perp who tugs at their heartstrings. Red flag 6: Clear skies & speeding (49:02-51:47) Hey, we’re not meteorologists, we’re detectives: so don’t ask us too many questions about this one. The situation escalates as yet more unlikely circumstances place the Titanic in the danger zone. Red flag 7: Sleepy Californians (51:47-57:41) Another boat (shit, sorry, VESSEL) enters the chat. But the detectives soon discover this won’t change the Titanic’s fate. We also learn more about the captain and a more pressing mystery reveals itself: did someone in the studio just fart? Constable’s conclusions (57:41-1:02:28) The Dumb Constable weighs in with a rare moment of genius. Plus, the terrible accents return. A perp is identified that the whole team can agree on. And we remember that, at the end of the day, this whole podcast is a joke. Lessons learned (1:02:28-1:04:58) Our heroic detective duo travel back to present day and reflect on today’s case.
