Today we're travelling back to 1984 to revisit An Audience with Joan Rivers. If you weren't around in the 80s, An Audience with... was one of ITV's most popular entertainment shows. A huge audience of celebrities and fans would gather to watch some of the biggest names in music, comedy and television perform before answering questions from the audience. In 1984, one of the biggest names in comedy took centre stage – the fearless, fast-talking and razor-sharp Joan Rivers. Joan Rivers was already a huge star in America thanks to her stand-up comedy and appearances on television with Johnny Carson. Her style was unlike anything many British viewers had seen. She was loud, quick-witted, fearless and didn't hold back. From the moment she walked onto the stage, she had the audience laughing. Her comedy covered everything from marriage and relationships to celebrities, fashion, ageing and everyday life. Nobody was off limits—including herself! One of Joan's greatest strengths was her willingness to make herself the butt of the joke before anyone else could. Watching it today, it's amazing how fast her delivery was. There was barely a pause between punchlines. She fired jokes out one after another, and her timing was absolutely incredible. Of course, comedy has changed over the years. Some of Joan Rivers' material reflects the attitudes of the 1980s, and a few jokes may feel dated or more provocative to modern audiences. But that's also part of revisiting classic television—seeing how entertainment has evolved while appreciating the performers who helped shape it. The audience Q&A section is a real highlight. Joan's off-the-cuff answers are just as funny as her prepared material, showing why she was regarded as one of the quickest minds in comedy. What also stands out is her confidence. At a time when stand-up comedy was dominated by men, Joan Rivers carved out her own place and became one of the most successful female comedians in the world. She inspired generations of comics who followed. For me, yes. While a few jokes belong firmly in the 80s, Joan's energy, confidence, storytelling and razor-sharp wit are timeless.
