    In 2 Samuel 11, we encounter David at his worst—a stark contrast to the faithful and compassionate king we saw in the previous chapter. As David’s success gives way to complacency, temptation, and ultimately self-salvation, we’re reminded that even our greatest moments don’t eliminate our need for God’s grace. David’s failure exposes a truth about every human heart: we cannot satisfy ourselves, save ourselves, or escape our need for God. You never outgrow your need for grace—and only Jesus, the true and better King, can provide the sufficiency, satisfaction, and salvation we need.

Through David's pursuit of the forgotten, we see a reflection of God's own heart—a kindness that remembers, seeks, welcomes, and restores those who have nothing to offer in return. More than changing our circumstances, the kindness of God transforms our hearts by bringing us into relationship with the King Himself. Ultimately, this passage points us to Jesus, the true and better King, who welcomes sinners not because they deserve a place at His table, but because He has paid the cost to bring them near.

    We begin our new series through the book of 2 Samuel by looking at 2 Samuel 5:1–12, where David is finally crowned king over all Israel. While this is a moment of great fulfillment in Israel’s history, the story reminds us that even Israel’s greatest king was never meant to be the final answer. Instead, David’s life and reign prepare us for the true and better King, Jesus Christ. In this sermon, we’ll see how David points us to the King we must submit to, the mission we are called to join, and the everlasting kingdom that Christ alone can establish. Every earthly hope and “if only” will ultimately disappoint, but King Jesus alone can bear the weight of our deepest longings and lead us into the life we were created to enjoy under His gracious rule.
