Bourbon, Builds, CORE And The Parts Panic

Brake pads, wiper blades, spark plugs, reman parts… what happens when the household names behind them start going dark? We kick things off in full garage mode with a Templeton Rye tasting and a barrel strength Penelope pour, swapping honest notes about burn, smoothness, and why a high-proof whiskey sometimes needs time (or a tiny splash of water) to open up. It’s the kind of hang where the jokes are loud, the opinions are unfiltered, and somebody’s always trying to justify a bottle purchase.  Then we get into the stuff our off-road friends actually need: sponsor updates, CORE planning, meal logistics, and the latest on votes, cronies, and rigs. We talk through what a more laid-back event looks like, why smaller groups can be better, and how a simple throwdown challenge turns into “do we really put the Astro van on the trail?” If you’re into off-roading, camping weekends, and the community that forms around builds, you’ll recognize the balance between big plans and real-life time, money, and wrenching.  The back half goes deep on the alleged First Brands Group mess and the potential ripple effects across the aftermarket auto parts supply chain. We cover the brands people actually buy, what it means when factories shut down but trademarks get sold, and why core charges, warranty support, and basic availability could get worse before it gets better. We also connect it to junkyards shrinking and ongoing consolidation across automotive and off-road brands, then ask the uncomfortable question: what does this do to everyday drivers and the shops that keep them moving?  If this hit a nerve, subscribe, share it with your favorite gearhead, and leave a review so more people find the show. Costa Rica Mission(ary) Success

A week can disappear when your to-do list is longer than your daylight, and we’re feeling all of it: shop chaos, school nights creeping back in, and that familiar mix of “I ran all day” versus “I slept all day.” We talk through real garage-life problems, from a Scout that suddenly won’t prime the fuel pump after a power wash to the kind of low-voltage, no-RPM-signal troubleshooting that makes you question every connector under the dash. Then we get into towing safety and the expensive reality of electric over hydraulic trailer brakes, where a sketchy wiring setup and a poorly mounted pump can turn into a thousand-dollar fix fast. We also share updates from our off-road world, including the latest on Core rig voting and a new twist that rewards the people who actually support the event: a sponsor pick plus a separate “crony pick” for rigs that don’t win the public vote. We dig into what makes a rig application work, why clear photos matter more than they should, and how tire size and recovery gear requirements keep things fun and safe. Then Guyer takes us way outside the shop with an eye-opening Costa Rica mission trip recap. We talk volunteer construction at a missionary language school, battling termite damage with steel framing and repairs, visiting churches that look nothing like home, and meeting kids living with no running water, no electricity, and dirt floors, yet somehow showing up with the biggest joy. It all builds to a powerful moment in the Pacific Ocean and a closing reminder we all needed: make time for your friends before “later” turns into years. If this one hits you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a perspective reset, and leave a review so more people can find the show. Shed Talk With Mud On Our Boots

Rain doesn’t just make an off-road park messy, it changes the whole mindset. We’re recording from the “barn” at Myobi in Iowa after a soaked, muddy fundraiser weekend that still pulled in about 30 to 35 rigs, plus plenty of people we’d never met who showed up just to be part of it. The vibe is pure grassroots off-roading: the landowner unlocks the shed, points at the trails, asks us to keep mud off the road, and then we all figure it out together. If you like honest event recaps and real trail talk, this one is for you.  We also bring on a first-time off-roader to hear what the day felt like from the passenger seat: bumpy suspension, the steep hill moment where you’re sure you’re tipping, and the surprisingly practical stuff like airflow and staying dry. From there we bounce into the kind of garage conversation that happens when you wheel hard in bad weather: a rig running hot, a tea-kettle whistle at 225 degrees, and the quick realization that AFR and fan settings can make or break your day. We get into Holley Terminator style tuning, why richer AFR can cool things down, and the tradeoffs of radiator placement, brushless fans, and cab temps.  Along the way we hit trail safety reminders, visibility upgrades like a Wolfbox-style camera mirror, and the sketchy reality of unmarked crests hiding drop-offs in mine tailings terrain. We close with raffle stories, how we keep drawings fair, why the cause matters, and whether we’re coming back next year. Subscribe, share this with your wheeling group, and leave a review with your best rain-trail lesson or worst “we should back out” moment. We Get Caught Up On Winners And Fix Our Hauling Setup

Ten minutes of audio disappears, so we do what any responsible garage crew would do: laugh, splice it together, and immediately start making a list of who we owe giveaway prizes to. We’ve got an August 15 event coming up at Mayobi, and before we roll into the next stretch of the year, we’re getting caught up the only way we know how by drawing monthly winners live and calling ourselves out for being bad at shipping stuff on time. If you’ve been waiting on gear, this one’s worth your time. From there, the conversation swings into the stuff that keeps off-road life running behind the scenes: supporters who help us stay motivated, what our Buzzsprout stats say about where we rank, and the kind of hauling stories that make you ask, “Should that vehicle really have a receiver hitch?” Yes, we’re talking about a Prius doing truck things, plus the ongoing quest to haul smarter without turning everything into a white-knuckle drive. The main tech rabbit hole is towing and trailer setup. We break down a new 34-foot PJ gooseneck with air ride suspension, an air ride hitch, and electric over hydraulic disc brakes, then get into brake controller tuning, loading angles, and why ramps can turn a calm day into a fast problem. We also recap Milwaukee Madness, share what Milwaukee reps hinted is coming next (including a battery-powered fridge/freezer), and flag a “you won” scam message so you don’t get caught clicking the wrong link. If you like real shop talk, off-road problem solving, and gear talk with zero polish, hit subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review. What’s the sketchiest thing you’ve ever hauled or towed?
