    DPS Snapshots Show with Natalie B. - District Updates for Jan. 30

    1. Messages From Dr. Marrero and DPS in Regards to Friday, January 30th     Dr. Marrero sent out a message to the DPS community yesterday, where he emphasized that schools will remain open on Friday,  January 30th. DPS is committed to our students, and thanks to actions taken by the district and district leaders, schools continue to be a safe haven for students.  Please check your email and the DPS website for the most up to date information, as there may be additional communication sent after the recording of this podcast.   2.ICYMI: Provide Feedback on the 2027-29 School Year Calendars DPS is in the process of building school year calendars for 2027-28 and 2028-29 and are seeking YOUR feedback to learn about calendar options that best fit the needs of our DPS community. The survey closes Friday, Feb. 6 and is open to all DPS students, families and staff. Families can access the survey by using the Family Survey linked in our shownotes.. Students should check their DPS inbox for an email with their unique survey link. 3. Upcoming CDAC Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3 The Communication Devices Advisory Committee (CDAC) is supporting the development of a new Board of Education policy outlining rules for student possession of communication devices, like cell phones, during the school day as required by Colorado HB25-1135.  If you are interested in observing the CDAC at work, their second meeting is on Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the 14th floor of the Emily Griffith Campus. Childcare and Spanish interpretation services will be available for meeting observers. If interpretation services are needed for languages other than Spanish, email CDAC.groups@dpsk12.net. For more information about the CDAC and their meetings, visit the CDAC webpage. 4.Submit Student Artwork for the Chance to be Featured in the Superintendent’s Notecards Calling all DPS student artists! All students are encouraged to submit original artwork for a special opportunity. Selected art pieces may be turned into greeting cards used by our Superintendent throughout the year! These honors highlight schools that are expanding access to AP coursework, supporting students in earning college credit, and building strong, intentional AP pathways. Congratulations to the following schools:  - Denver School of the Arts: Platinum recognition   - East High School  - North High School  - South High School  - Thomas Jefferson High School All received gold recognition Bruce Randolph School and George Washington High School received Silver recognition  These schools met rigorous benchmarks in college-going culture, college credit attainment and AP optimization, reflecting a strong commitment to student opportunity and success.     1. Search Launch for President of DPS’s Emily Griffith Technical College As previously shared, Denver Public Schools is launching a national search to identify the next President of Emily Griffith Technical College, or EGTC, a leader who will build on the strong foundation in place and continue advancing Emily Griffith’s mission of Opportunity for All, in alignment with DPS’ vision that Every Learner Thrives. DPS is working with a national executive search firm to recruit and select the best possible candidate for this critical role. The position is now posted apply or learn.  Thank you to the EGTC and DPS communities for your continued partnership and commitment as we move forward in this important process for Emily Griffith Technical College. 2.DPS 101 with Dr. Alex Marrero The DPS 101 Podcast is the podcast version of the DPS 101 Community Leadership Course. In this episode, Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero shares his leadership story and explains how he works with the Board of Education to lead DPS. Tune into the conversation. 3. Teacher Talks coming to FACE University! The FACE team invites you to Teacher Talk Tuesdays, a new series of virtual sessions hosted on the first Tuesday of every month! These sessions are designed to bring families and teachers together to learn, practice and ask questions about what students are learning in the classroom.  You can sign up for a live Teacher Talk Session: The Kindergarten session will be on Tuesday, February 3. An english session will be offered at 6:15 pm, and a Spanish Session will be offered at 7:15 p.m.  Kindergarten: Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6:15 p.m. (English) 7:15 p.m. (Spanish)There is also a Fifth Grade math session being held on Monday, February 10 at 6:15 p.m. (This session is being offered in both English and Spanish.) 4.DPS is Cooking Up a Surprise The DPS Communications team is Cooking Up A Surprise. If you have a favorite recipe that uses Colorado or locally grown ingredients, share it with the DPS Communications team. The DHE-DPS Robotics Competition The DHE-DPS Elementary Robotics Competition gave students from across the district a chance to showcase months of hard work as they tested their skills in autonomous coding challenges, one-minute driving rounds and teamwork matches. Every robot was student-built and student-programmed, with teachers serving as guides rather than builders. For many students, robotics is more than a competition. It’s an opportunity to explore STEAM, learn from failure and collaborate with peers. Events like this help ensure students are exposed early to the skills and pathways shaping the world around them and give them a space to be celebrated for their passion, curiosity and growth. Join in on the fun on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 8 a.m. at North High School for the next robotics competition. You can watch the full DHE-DPS Elementary Robotics Competition video.     1.Abraham Lincoln High School’s  It was all yellow at Lincoln this past week. Literally. DPS Superintendent, and Board President Gaytan dressed in yellow and surprised Lancer students to celebrate their two-level jump on the DPS School Performance Framework, moving from Red all the way to Yellow in a single year! This milestone is a testament to the hard work of the students, staff, and families at Lincoln. Congratulations, Lancers! In partnership with the Denver Public Schools Foundation and community organizations, Community Hubs supported more than 800 students with holiday gifts, essential items and welcoming experiences. Families enjoyed warm, joyful events with strong participation and thoughtful details, including festive toy giveaways with gift wrapping, hot cocoa, access to mini market resources and opportunities to sign up for ongoing programming, all in collaboration with host schools. If you’d like to see some heartwarming photos, head to the photo gallery linked in our shownotes. 3.Tasty Food: Free Meals Available During Winter Break All youth ages 3-18 are welcome to receive free meals and snacks. No ID or registration is required. Explore available locations and times by visiting the Tasty Food website linked in our shownotes. Beginning in January 2026, Tasty Food will transition to the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE). The program will continue to operate and will be administered by DDPHE.  4.Library Services Presents: Wrapped 2025 In 2025, DPS students turned pages into possibilities! Through DPS Library Services, we celebrate these successes highlighting books that are inspiring and building literacy skills. What they don’t know? He’s also a rapper, painter, and creative at heart.
