    [Spiritual Care] Guard Your Heart

Scripture passage for today: Proverbs 4:20-23 - "My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one's whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Navigating the journey of immigration can be an uphill battle, filled with challenges that often feel overwhelming. I find myself reflecting on the spiritual aspect of this experience, recognizing that the emotional toll can be just as significant as the practical hurdles. In this episode, I delve into the importance of spiritually guarding our hearts during this difficult time. I draw inspiration from Proverbs 4:20-23, which emphasizes the necessity of paying attention to the words that influence us, turning our ears to what nurtures our spirit - God's word, the Bible, and ultimately guarding our hearts. As we face the trials of settling in a new country, it’s crucial to remember that our emotional and spiritual well-being is foundational to our success. In this episode I'll share personal reflections and practical steps on how to be vigilant in this aspect of our lives - things that I'm working to put into practice in my own life and with my own struggles. This is an invitation to take proactive steps in nurturing your spirit, especially when the pressures of immigration and life in general seem relentless. Takeaways: Guarding your heart is essential for your emotional and spiritual well-being.Pay attention to the words you let into your heart, as they shape your thoughts and actions.Find encouragement in scripture to help maintain a positive mindset during tough times.Engage in prayer to bring your worries to God and seek HIS peace amidst chaos. (Philippians 4:6-8)Stay vigilant against negative thoughts that can invade your mind and disrupt your peace.

  5. Is AI really helping you prepare for the CELPIP?

Is AI really helping you prepare for the CELPIP?

The use of AI is happening and spreading all around us, and language learning is not immune to its influence. Maybe you're even using to help you as you work towards your CELPIP and English learning goals. But AI raises some serious questions for me that I want to wrestle with, and share with you. The first: can (should) AI take the place of teachers and actually interacting with other people as you build your English skills? In this episode I'm reflecting on the idea of cognitive debt—how relying too heavily on AI can lead to a superficial understanding of information. I also tackle cognitive surrender, which happens when you blindly trust AI’s output without questioning it, which can dilute critical thinking skills, and lead to making mistakes. I believe we need to embrace AI as a helpful tool while still valuing the irreplaceable human connection and interaction that teachers and the people around us provide. So, let’s explore how you can leverage AI effectively while keeping your learning experience rich and meaningful! Takeaways:AI is a powerful tool for language learning, but it should never replace real human interaction.Cognitive debt occurs when we rely too heavily on AI for quick information without fully understanding it.Engaging with real people while learning a language solidifies skills more effectively than using AI alone.Cognitive surrender happens when we blindly trust AI without questioning its information or advice.Practice your language skills in real-life situations to develop deeper connections with the material.Use AI as a supplementary resource, but prioritize meaningful conversations with others for true learning. [Spiritual Care] Where is your strength coming from?

This is the first of hopefully many spiritual care focused episodes. I'm not going to be talking about learning English or prepping for the CELPIP in these episodes. Instead, my focus is going to be on encouraging you to have and grow in your relationship with God - spiritual care. I'm not coming at this as someone who 'has arrived' or is somehow an expert. I'm not either of those things. My hope and intention is to encourage you to press into your relationship with God, or start one if you have never done so, to help you as you make your way through all the challenges of immigrating to Canada. Today's episode is based on Ephesians 6:10 "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power." and dives into the often overlooked spiritual side of immigrating to a new country. I share my thoughts on how moving to Canada isn’t just about wrapping your head around paperwork or mastering English; it’s a profound emotional and spiritual journey that can shake your sense of identity and belonging. By leaning into your relationship with God, you can find the support you need to navigate the challenges you face each day. Takeaways: Immigrating to a new country involves much more than just paperwork and exams; it affects your entire life, and can challenge you to the core. It's crucial to nurture your spiritual well-being while navigating the stresses of immigration.Relying on personal strength isn't always enough; turning to God can offer the help you need.Facing overwhelming challenges is a common experience as an immigrant; it's okay to seek support and encouragement from your faith.Building a relationship with God will provide the strength and peace you need to make your way through life’s difficulties.

What To Do When Your English Disappears in Mid Conversation!

Ever been caught in a conversation where your English just up and disappears? It’s a terrible feeling isn't it? You’re chatting away, and then—poof!—your English words vanish when you need them most. If that's happened to you, trust me, you’re not alone in feeling that frustration. In this episode, I dive into the shared experience of language learners who find themselves tongue-tied at the worst moments. I’ll share some practical tips on shifting your mindset and managing those pesky feelings of not being good enough when you stumble over your words. We'll talk about how to take the pressure off yourself and make conversations easier, so you can express your thoughts without that nagging fear of judgment. That Dale Carnegie quote I mention? “The royal road to a person’s heart is to talk about the things he or she treasures most. If we talk to people about what they are interested in, they will feel valued and value us in return.” - Dale Carnegie.Episode Takeaways: Experiencing a moment of forgetting what to say in a conversation is totally normal, so don’t stress about it.Instead of thinking negatively about your language skills, focus on reframing your thoughts during conversations. It’s okay to pause and collect your thoughts; just let your conversation partner know you need a moment.Ask questions during conversations to shift the focus away from yourself and engage others.Remember that everyone struggles with language at times; you're not alone in this experience.Practice having conversations regularly to build your confidence and fluency in English.
