Is Portugal Better Without Ronaldo? A Die-Hard Fan Responds

Is Portugal better without Cristiano Ronaldo—or are we witnessing a messy chapter in the career of the country's greatest footballing icon? This week on A Semi-Informed Football Podcast, we're seeing double! Host Marko welcomes special guest Marko, a lifelong Portugal supporter, Benfica fan and fellow soccer dad, for a passionate discussion about Cristiano Ronaldo's controversial departure from the Portuguese national-team camp. For over two decades, Ronaldo has been the face of Portuguese football. From his early days at Euro 2004 to Portugal's historic international triumphs, his influence goes far beyond goals and trophies. But at 41 years old, with manager Jorge Jesus introducing a new approach and Gonçalo Ramos stepping up, is Portugal finally preparing for life without CR7? Marco shares what Ronaldo means to him personally, including the unforgettable experience of watching his hero score in Toronto. He also explains why he was heartbroken by Ronaldo's decision to walk away—even while acknowledging that the captain made a mistake. Together, we debate whether Jorge Jesus handled the situation correctly, whether Ronaldo deserves special consideration after 23 years of service, and why Portugal's recent success doesn't necessarily mean the team is better without him. In this episode: Why Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal's national-team campJorge Jesus, player management and the battle for authorityGonçalo Ramos and Portugal's evolving attacking systemRonaldo's legacy, leadership and influence on generations of Portuguese footballersWhether Ronaldo should return in a reduced roleThe Ronaldo vs Messi debate and how the media treats football's biggest iconsWhat a fitting final chapter for Ronaldo's international career could look likeWe also explore Ronaldo's influence away from football, from his business ventures to his charitable work, and ask whether his greatest contribution to Portugal might ultimately extend beyond the pitch. The big question: Should Portugal move on from Ronaldo, or find a new way to use one of football's greatest-ever goalscorers? Join Marko and Marco for a thoughtful, occasionally emotional and appropriately Semi-Informed conversation about loyalty, legacy and the difficult business of saying goodbye to a legend. The Manchester City Verdict: Titles, Pep & Punishment, Does Man City's Era Have an Asterisk?

Manchester City’s long-running financial case is back at the centre of English football - and Marko, Mark and Matteo have plenty to say about it. In this episode, we break down the reported findings against City, the ongoing appeal process and the much bigger question: what does all of this mean for Manchester City’s legacy? Mark argues that the controversy doesn't just affect City - it changes how we look at an entire era of Premier League football. As a Liverpool supporter, he has particular reason to care after Liverpool twice finished just one point behind City in title races. Matteo pushes back on how much blame should extend to Pep Guardiola and City's players, leading to a heated debate over whether Pep's incredible managerial achievements should now be viewed differently. Then comes the question nobody can definitively answer yet: what should actually happen to Manchester City? Relegation? A massive points deduction? Transfer restrictions? Financial penalties? Compensation for clubs that potentially lost trophies, Champions League places and revenue while competing against City? We also ask whether City's previous titles should stand, whether they should carry an unofficial asterisk in the eyes of supporters, and what serious sanctions could mean for players such as Erling Haaland. It's part football debate, part courtroom speculation and exactly the sort of argument the international break was invented for. Europe Is Back: Our Way-Too-Early Season Predictions or Who Wins Europe’s Biggest Leagues? | Early Season Predictions

The Semi-Informed Football Podcast is back after its post-World Cup summer break, and Marko and Mark are diving straight into the new European club season. With the transfer window behind us and the first few weeks of football providing just enough evidence to make some potentially regrettable predictions, we take an early look across Europe’s top five leagues. In La Liga, we discuss Barcelona’s strong start, Real Madrid’s evolving squad, José Mourinho’s return to Madrid and the ongoing Julián Álvarez transfer saga. In Germany, we ask whether anyone can realistically stop Bayern and whether Freiburg can turn their promising start into a Champions League place. Then it’s off to Serie A, where Como continues to fascinate us, Roma is showing promise and some of Italy’s traditional giants are already making life unnecessarily difficult for themselves. Finally, we dig into the Premier League: can Arsenal repeat as champions? When will Liverpool’s new-look squad start clicking? Can Manchester City maintain their dominance without Pep Guardiola? We also debate Manchester United, Chelsea, Marcus Rashford and a controversial Manchester derby decision before making our way-too-early top-four predictions. Plus, a quick stop in France to discuss PSG’s slow start—and a tease of a deeper Champions League episode coming soon. Club football is back. Our predictions are probably premature. In other words, we’re perfectly Semi-Informed. To contact us reach out to semiinformedfootball@gmail.com Follow us on X at @SemiFooty

World Cup Quarterfinal Preview: Controversy, Comebacks & Bold Predictions

In this episode of The Semi-Informed Football Podcast, we dive into the biggest storylines heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals. The conversation begins with a spirited recap of Argentina's dramatic victory over Egypt, where we tackle one of the tournament's hottest debates: was the match influenced by controversial officiating, or did Argentina simply find another way to win? We analyze the overturned Egyptian goal, VAR decisions, penalty appeals, and whether Argentina benefited from inconsistent refereeing. From there, we discuss what has made Argentina so dangerous despite not always playing their best football. Is it talent, resilience, or simply the mentality of a champion? We also examine Lionel Messi's surprising struggles from the penalty spot and debate whether he should remain Argentina's first-choice taker. The discussion then shifts to Colombia versus Switzerland, where Switzerland's continued growth throughout the tournament earns praise, while Colombia's exciting attacking football leaves everyone wondering what might have been. Finally, we preview the quarterfinal matchups, evaluate which remaining teams have the momentum to go all the way, and make our predictions as the race for the World Cup trophy intensifies. Whether you're here for tactical analysis, controversial refereeing debates, or simply to hear two football fans disagree on just about everything, this episode has you covered.
