    The year is 1914, and Europe is on the brink of a Great War. In England, a German spy named Von Bork is getting ready to leave the country with his massive dossier of intelligence, collected over the course of his four years undercover. Von Bork's compatriot, Baron von Herling, is impressed with the collection, and promises Von Bork a hero's welcome upon his return to Berlin. There's only one final task remaining: a delivery of British naval codes from Von Bork's informant, an American named Altamont. The stage is set for Holmes's most important mission yet. After examining the scene of the crime, they unexpectedly encounter the famous explorer Dr. Leon Sterndale. His appearance in Cornwall just at the time of the mysterious death is suspicious, and his shifty behavior with Holmes doesn't help matters. But before Holmes can make any deductions, there is news of yet another death: Brenda's brother Mortimer Tregennis.
