Shoalhaven Youthlocal is back for Season 7! 🎉 The team kicks off a brand-new season with book reviews, underwater adventures, a fascinating Australian true crime case, some big questions about organic farming, and plenty of laughs as they welcome a new member to the Youthlocal crew! 📚 Book Nook delivers a double review! Arlo explores Deep Work by Cal Newport, a book about finding focus and avoiding distractions in an increasingly busy world, before turning to George Orwell's classic Animal Farm. From productivity and concentration to power, politics and freedom of speech, both books earn an impressive five-star rating! 😂 Who's Most Likely To? returns, and this time there's a new voice in the studio! The team welcomes Jess before tackling some wonderfully ridiculous questions. Who would move into a lighthouse just for the aesthetic? Join a pirate crew? Live off-grid with goats? Start a not-for-profit? Or host a talent show for their pets? As usual, the team has some very strong opinions about each other! 🤿 Tide Talk gets personal as Bella shares her incredible scuba diving adventures! From swimming alongside grey nurse sharks, Port Jackson sharks, wobbegongs and seals to encountering humpback whales, Bella takes us beneath the surface. She also shares what she's learning through her scuba diving certification, including dive safety, underwater pressure and why breathing properly is so important when you're exploring the ocean. 🕵️ Morning Cup of Mystery investigates the chilling Sundown Murders of 1957. When three travellers disappeared in remote South Australia, the discovery of their bodies sparked a major police investigation. Raymond John Bailey was eventually convicted and executed, but questions about his confession, the forensic evidence and the investigation have continued to raise doubts about the case. 🌱 AgriNews asks an interesting question: Does natural always mean safer? Arlo takes a closer look at pesticides and fungicides used in organic farming, including copper sulphate, and compares their potential environmental and health risks with synthetic alternatives such as glyphosate. The discussion sparks a lively debate about agricultural chemicals, environmental impacts and the assumptions we make about organic products. From swimming with sharks to political satire, farming science to historical mysteries, Season 7 is off to a wonderfully curious start! Youthlocal is a Dunn Lewis Foundation youth program designed to develop youth confidence, interpersonal skills, media literacy and community connections. The team meets every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30–5:00pm. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on Shoalhaven Youthlocal, the team heads back to the First World War, asks whether schools should teach young people about inequality, investigates one of America’s most famous unsolved cases, and discovers exactly who among the Youthlocal crew is most likely to swim with sharks! 📚 Book Nook reviews The Last Charge of the Australian Light Horse by Peter FitzSimons. Arlo gives this one an impressive six stars out of five, praising its research and storytelling as he explores the Australian Light Horse, the soldiers and horses who served in the Middle East during World War I, and the enormous logistics involved in moving and caring for so many horses during wartime. 💬 Hot Topic asks: Should schools teach students about inequality? The team discusses whether these conversations belong in the classroom, the inequality young people can encounter themselves, marginalised voices, representation in sport, and whether schools have a responsibility to help students understand experiences beyond their own. As always, there are plenty of different opinions along the way! 🕵️ Morning Cup of Mystery examines the still-unsolved murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The six-year-old was found dead in her family’s Colorado home in 1996 after her parents discovered a ransom note that morning. The team walks through the crime scene, the ransom note, the investigation, DNA evidence and the questions that have kept the case in the public eye for decades. No one has ever been charged, and the homicide investigation remains open. 😂 Who’s Most Likely To? is back! Who would accidentally become the face of a major cause? Break a bone doing something simple? Take up an extreme sport? Scream in a haunted house? Throw a birthday party for their pet? Swim with sharks? Become a farmer? And who has the greatest chance of ending up with an embarrassing tattoo? The team knows each other pretty well by now — although they definitely don’t always agree! It’s another episode packed with history, big questions, mystery, laughter and young people sharing what they really think. Youthlocal is a Dunn Lewis Foundation youth program designed to develop youth confidence, interpersonal skills, media literacy and community connections. This week on Shoalhaven Youthlocal, the team meets a coral that refuses to follow the rules, debates whether smartphones are actually making us less smart, looks at the future of farming technology, and investigates one of the most famous kidnappings of the 20th century. 🌊 Tide Talk introduces the colourful and slightly chaotic sun coral. Unlike most corals, sun coral doesn’t rely on sunlight for energy — instead, it comes alive at night and catches plankton and other tiny creatures with its tentacles. Bella explores what makes this carnivorous coral so unusual, why it can become invasive, and how something so beautiful can cause problems when it turns up where it doesn’t belong. 📱 Hot Topic asks a big question: Are smartphones making us less smart? The team debates AI, distraction, deep thinking, personal responsibility and whether having unlimited information at our fingertips is actually helping us think — or encouraging us to think less. Bella even brings some real-world customer service experience into the debate! 🚁 AgriNews heads into the future with a look at helicopter-sized agricultural drones. Arlo explores how larger, petrol-powered autonomous aircraft could be used for crop spraying, seeding, mustering, firefighting, deliveries and work on remote properties — and whether a machine costing well over $100,000 could actually be a worthwhile investment for farmers. 🕵️ Morning Cup of Mystery Mia investigates the infamous Lindbergh baby kidnapping of 1932. The disappearance of 20-month-old Charles Lindbergh Jr. triggered a huge investigation involving ransom notes, marked money, a homemade ladder and a suspect who maintained his innocence until his execution. The team explores the evidence that led to the conviction — and the questions that have kept people debating the case ever since. From carnivorous coral and smartphones to flying farm machinery and historic mysteries, it’s another episode packed with curiosity, strong opinions and young people exploring the world around them. This week on Shoalhaven Youthlocal, the team meets one of the ocean’s most charismatic whales, investigates a dark chapter of Australian crime, takes issue with the weather app, and gets very real about our relationship with our phones. 🐋 Tide Talk heads to the Arctic to discover the fascinating world of beluga whales. Bella explores why these social white whales are such incredible communicators, how they survive icy Arctic conditions, and some amazing stories of belugas mimicking human speech, copying dolphins and even retrieving a dropped phone from the ocean! 🕵️ Morning Cup of Mystery examines the disturbing case of John Balaban, a Romanian-born chemist convicted of murder in Adelaide in 1953. The team looks at the investigation that connected his crimes in Australia with an earlier unsolved killing in Paris, eventually leading to his conviction and execution at Adelaide Gaol. ☀️ Arlo Has a Complaint — or perhaps the beginning of a brand-new Sternly Worded Letters segment! Arlo takes aim at the Apple Weather app for describing rising barometric pressure as an “improvement” in the weather. But is sunshine always good weather when farmers need rain, tanks are running dry and bushfire conditions are worsening? An unexpected debate about the language we use to describe something as ordinary as the weather. 📱 Living Skillfully tackles phone management and phone addiction. Mia and Lillian have an honest conversation about social media, screen time, staying connected with friends, phone-free time and the tools they use to manage their own habits. They also share their perspectives on school phone bans, including what they think works, what doesn’t, and why young people may sometimes need access to their phones for support and communication. This week on Shoalhaven Youthlocal, the team explores a difficult chapter of Australian history, puts their friendships to the test, shares some great opportunities for young people, and discovers that one of our most familiar local seaweeds is more interesting than it looks! 📚 Book Nook reviews Blackbirding by Ryan Butta, exploring the history of the Pacific Island slave trade in colonial Australia. Arlo discusses the book’s extensive research, the treatment of Pacific Islander workers, deportation and the White Australia Policy — while also sharing what worked and didn’t work for him as a reader. 😂 Who’s Most Likely To? makes its Youthlocal debut! Who’s most likely to survive a horror movie? Accidentally become a millionaire? Join a cult? Adopt far too many pets? Or end up on Australia’s Got Talent? Bella, Arlo and Gemma discover just how well they know each other in a new segment that may reveal a little too much! 📅 Stuff To Do looks at two opportunities to get involved in the community. This week on Shoalhaven Youthlocal, the team explores business advice, one of Sydney’s strangest unsolved mysteries, and the incredible science behind creatures that glow in the dark. 📚 Book Nook takes on The Diary of a CEO: The 33 Laws of Business and Life by Steven Bartlett. Arlo finds plenty of useful ideas about business, leadership, standing out from the crowd and managing a team — but does one disappointing ending really justify a zero-star review? You’ll have to listen to find out! 🦈 Morning Cup of Mystery investigates the incredible Shark Arm Case of 1935. When a tiger shark at a Sydney aquarium unexpectedly regurgitated a human arm, police were drawn into a bizarre murder investigation involving a missing boxer, criminals, blackmail, another mysterious death — and an arm that had apparently been swallowed by one shark before that shark was eaten by another. Nearly a century later, the case remains officially unsolved. ✨ Tide Talk lights up the ocean with a deep dive into bioluminescence. Bella explores how creatures create their own light, why glowing can help animals hunt, hide, communicate and defend themselves, and how bioluminescent plankton can transform the water into a spectacular blue glow — including right here in Jervis Bay. It’s another episode full of curious facts, lively opinions, strange history and plenty of Youthlocal humour.
