“The purpose of life is not to be happy at all. It is to be useful, to be honorable. It is to be compassionate. It is to matter, to have it make some difference that you lived.” Leo Rosten Have you ever wondered why we have a body that’s capable of doing extraordinary things? Have you questioned why we experience a new sense of vigor when we wake? How about our thirst for newness — ever wonder why it’s there? Humans are built for utility, for usefulness. It’s why we feel good when we exercise, when we use our strength and intellect for accomplishing goals, and it’s why we find satisfaction in overcoming challenges. This is also why the quest for happiness is largely futile, a fruitless pursuit. Happiness is a byproduct of something much greater. We find happiness through usefulness and service to others. “Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on earth.” N. Eldon Tanner Too much self-focus is quietly destructive. Turn the lens inward, and the world shrinks, significance fades, fulfillment dribbles away, and life starts to feel hopeless. Conversely, if we aim at contributing to the world in some meaningful way, we will experience meaning and purpose. “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know. The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” Albert Schweitzer All the wisdom of the world, the utterances from the ancients, and the echoes from God point us to a life focused on others, and life becomes bleak when we ignore this universal truth. It’s why the monk can exist without possessions and be full of joy. It’s why Mother Teresa chose to give her life to the less fortunate and inspired the world. It’s the same reason Nelson Mandela said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Teresa and Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize for their service to others. Remember, the purpose of life is not to be happy at all. It is to be useful, to be honorable. It is to be compassionate. It is to matter, to have it make some difference that you lived. “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” Joseph Campbell This one is dedicated to all of us who have struggled to fit in, who’ve tried to be someone we thought would be accepted, to all of us who have struggled with identity. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out!” Dr. Seuss You are unique. Like no one else. You have an innate, singular advantage for being exactly who you were born to be, and while the rest of the world is trying to look, talk, and act like someone else, you are free to be the one who stands out from the crowd of imposters. When people realize this, they can lay down the act of being inauthentic and begin to embrace who they were born to be. There’s a common idea in acting. You must prepare, prepare, prepare, and be willing to throw it all away. This means prepare for your scene until you can rehearse it in your sleep, and when you arrive on set to film, be ready to throw it all away and become the character, or a piece of the ensemble, that’s being co-created with the rest of the team. Why? To tell the truth. A good storyteller should have a primary aim of telling the truth. But why? Because phonies are easily spotted. The truly authentic person asks the most important question, life’s sine qua non, “Who am I?” And then finds a way to answer that question. This means learning to be okay with who you are. It means being courageous enough to turn away from what everyone else is doing, saying, thinking, and embracing the truest version of yourself. When we think about who we are, what do we gravitate toward? Sameness or uniqueness? When we spend our life trying to fit in, we shackle our creativity, our unique perspective, and most importantly, our uniqueness, which is our offering to the world. That artist, or actor, or singer, who you admire because of that ‘thing’ you can’t quite put your finger on, but you know exists, that’s their true self. Ask yourself, “What are they doing?” I would suggest they are throwing it all away and being who they are. This is impossible to do when worried about what everyone else might think. So today, begin to embrace ‘you.’ There’s freedom in it. There’s joy, too. But more importantly, you have something the world needs: a gift or talent or way of thinking. Use that thing only you can offer to add a little bit more light to the world. And remember, the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are. Has my writing benefited you? “Every moment of one’s existence one is growing into more or retreating into less. One is always living a little more or dying a little bit.” Norman Mailer The most encouraging part of this opening quote is that we get to choose our direction. We can advance or retreat, live a little more or die a bit today, expand our life, or shrink back in fear. It is our choice, and we alone get to make it. I heard it said that history does not repeat itself, but that human nature does. If this is true, and I believe it is, then we will always have the rise and fall of evil nations, corrupt politicians, and murderous individuals. But why is this? Fundamentally, it’s because we are given free will. We are given the ability to choose, and this is one of the most significant truths in life. Humans, throughout history, have decided, through their own justification, that genocide is acceptable, and that spending their life on a peace project is a worthy venture, or that a life of solitude as a monk is acceptable. The only common denominator is free will. “Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.” Anais Nin Each of us gets to wake up daily and decide what to pursue. Will we choose to build or destroy? Will we create art or war? Or will we entirely choose a different path, one that says, I’m a product of the world around me, the culture I’ve grown up in, and my influences have shaped me? This is the position of the victim; life happens to them, not because of them or by them. When someone says, ‘I can’t help it. It’s just the way I was raised’ or any other form of victimhood, they’ve decided to lay down their free will, and this is a grave mistake, and what these people do not realize is that even this is a choice one makes. At the most fundamental level, we are bound or set free by our choices. The titan and the peasant, the victor and the victim, the hero and the villain—each is separated from the other not by fate but by their beliefs and actions. The decision is yours. Choose wisely.
