But what if Jesus wasn’t talking about attendance at all? In this episode of Biblical Misconceptions, we put Matthew 18:20 back into its literary, historical, and theological context, and what we discover changes the conversation. Jesus is addressing sin, witnesses, church discipline, accountability, reconciliation, and delegated authority within the Christian community. And those “two or three”? They didn’t suddenly appear in verse 20. We’ll also explore what this passage has to say to our culture about cancel culture, public shaming, spiritual abuse, institutional distrust, individualism, justice, forgiveness, and the misuse of religious authority.
