Know The Ropes Ep 4 Catalina Traylor

Catalina Traylor, one of our freediving assistant instructors and a local legend, joins us for Episode 4! Catalina is a loan officer here in San Diego who can be found on the beach playing volleyball, the bay paddleboarding, on or under the ocean fishing or freediving. We talk about overcoming her feeling of being intimidated during her first class and how she was able to progress here and down at the Cenotes in Playa del Carmen for her deepest (so far) dive of 40m, and what she is working on to continue even deeper! One of these things is FRC diving, or Functional Residual Capacity, which a technique we teach in our advanced classes. She loves the duality of freediving, how we train to find peace in the middle of what could be seen as an anxiety ridden event (being deep underwater and having to hold your breath!) 14:06 Catalina grew up on a sailboat here in Southern California and her dad spearfished quite often. She tells us about how she got him back in the water this past year after a 20 year hiatus and how as soon as he hit the water he turned from a 70 year old man into a 20 year old youth! Pretty awesome to hear! 15:23 The mental aspect of freediving is so fascinating, and Catalina shares a couple techniques she has tried out during her dives. I definitely recommend listening to these, how they progressed, and how she changed her strategy to adapt to that! 19:10 Diet restrictions?? Dairy? No dairy? Does it affect congestion? Cat has a story for you! 20:00 Some people don't eat or drink coffee before they dive...but Catalina is self diagnosed with hangeratitus so she fuels up with a small breakfast with some coffee...not a full meal but it takes the edge off! Thankfully! Love you Cat ;) 20:43 What it's like diving the kelp forests of San Diego, and the slight subtle differences between that and diving in the Cenotes. 27:02 Why the mental aspect is so important, and how the line reveals all! 29:30 How Cat knew she wanted to become an instructor, what that progress has been like, how adding performance expectations to depth has impacted her relationship to diving, and the all female classes she plans to put together in the future Then she gives us all the warm and fuzzies and tells us what Just Get Wet and the freediving community has meant to her :) 35:37 What she would tell a student who might be afraid of or intimidated by the course...hint...you might be surprised at what you can do! So listen to this part!
