150: Rebounding After 40: Why Low-Impact Exercise May Be the Secret to Aging Strong with Steve Carver

Rebounding After 40: Why Low-Impact Exercise May Be the Secret to Aging Strong with Steve Carver What if getting older doesn't mean you need to work out harder—but smarter? In this episode of Girls Talk Healthy Aging, Alli and Shawna sit down with Steve Carver, Master Trainer and Product Development Director at JumpSport, to talk about one of the most fun—and often misunderstood—forms of exercise: rebounding on a mini trampoline. With more than 35 years in the fitness industry, Steve has worked with everyone from everyday exercisers to celebrities, including Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora. Known as "Mr. Bouncer," Steve has spent decades helping people discover how low-impact movement can still deliver meaningful fitness benefits. And this conversation is especially relevant for women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. As we age, many women find that the workouts they used to love suddenly leave them feeling achy, exhausted, or beat up. So does that mean we should exercise less—or simply change the way we're training? Steve explains why low-impact doesn't mean low results, how rebounding can challenge cardiovascular fitness, balance and coordination, and why finding movement you actually enjoy may be one of the keys to staying consistent as you age. In this episode, we talk about: • Why exercise can start feeling different during perimenopause and menopause • Why low-impact exercise can still provide a challenging workout • Rebounding for women over 40 and healthy aging • How mini trampoline exercise can challenge balance and coordination • Rebounding alongside strength training for muscle and bone health • Why protecting your joints doesn't mean giving up intensity • The connection between movement, fun and long-term exercise adherence • How women who haven't exercised consistently can safely get started • What Steve has learned after more than 35 years in the fitness industry If you've ever thought, "The workouts I used to do just don't feel good anymore," this episode is for you. You don't have to stop challenging yourself as you age. You may just need to challenge yourself differently. WANT TO TRY REBOUNDING? We're excited to partner with JumpSport! 149: The Scale Is Lying to You: What Your Weight Really Means After 40

For so many women, the scale has a complicated place in our lives. It can feel like a source of information one day—and a source of stress, judgment, and self-worth the next. In this episode of Girls Talk Healthy Aging, Shawna and Alli get real about their own relationships with the scale and how those relationships have changed over the years. How often should you weigh yourself? Is daily weighing healthy—or can it become obsessive? And what happens when your relationship with the scale changes because your goals change? Shawna is currently competing in weightlifting competitions, which means making a specific weight class is part of her sport. As a result, she weighs herself every day. Alli, on the other hand, isn't training for a weight-related competition and is currently choosing to only step on the scale at the doctor's office. The two friends talk about what they're actually weighing, what the scale can tell you, and—perhaps more importantly—everything it can't measure. Because the scale doesn't measure your strength, muscle, fitness, mobility, balance, energy, confidence, health, or the incredible things your body is capable of doing. If you've ever let a number on the scale dictate your mood, your food choices, your workout, or how you feel about your body, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we discuss: Why women can become so obsessed with the number on the scale How often Shawna and Alli weigh themselves—and why The difference between weighing for a specific goal and weighing out of habit Shawna's experience weighing daily for weightlifting competitions Why Alli has chosen not to regularly weigh herself right now What the scale actually tells you—and what it doesn't Why weight can fluctuate even when nothing is "wrong" Whether daily weighing can be healthy How to develop a healthier relationship with the scale The numbers and measurements that may matter more than body weight Why your weight doesn't define your health, fitness, or worth Grab your coffee and join us for another honest conversation about what it's really like to navigate health, fitness, aging, and our changing bodies as women. *Subscribe, Share, & Rate our Show. 148: Visceral Fat After 40: Why Your Belly Changes & What Actually Works

Visceral fat is everywhere on social media right now—but how much of what you're hearing is actually true? In this episode of Girls Talk Healthy Aging, Alli and Shawna break down what visceral fat really is, why it matters for your health, and why women often notice changes in abdominal fat during perimenopause and after menopause. Visceral fat is the fat stored deep inside the abdominal cavity around your organs. Unlike the subcutaneous fat you can pinch, visceral fat is more metabolically active and is associated with increased risk for conditions such as insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. But here's where social media can make things confusing: visceral fat isn't a completely different kind of fat that requires a special diet, supplement or workout to eliminate. Alli and Shawna talk about: What visceral fat actually is—and how it's different from subcutaneous fat Why women tend to store fat differently from men How estrogen influences fat distribution throughout a woman's life Why the transition through perimenopause and menopause can lead to more abdominal and visceral fat Why the changes you see in your waistline aren't always simply about gaining weight Whether you can actually "target" visceral fat The role of calorie balance in reducing excess body fat Why resistance training and aerobic exercise both matter The importance of protein and preserving muscle during midlife How sleep and stress can influence body composition and metabolic health What we know—and don't know—about menopause hormone therapy and visceral fat The social media claims about belly fat that deserve a healthy dose of skepticism Most importantly, Alli and Shawna cut through the "belly fat hacks" and bring the conversation back to what actually matters for healthy aging: strength training, movement, nutrition, adequate protein, sustainable habits, sleep, stress management and consistency. Your body isn't broken because it changes during midlife. Your hormones, body composition and fat distribution change—and your approach to health and fitness may need to evolve with you. No magic tricks. No fear-mongering. Just the science and practical strategies midlife women can actually use. Listen in and share this episode with a woman who has been wondering what the heck is going on with her belly after 40! *Subscribe, Share, & Rate our Show. 147: Our Healthy Aging Journey: Our 30s, 40s, 50s & 60s | Part 2

What happens when life doesn't go according to plan? In Part 2 of our Healthy Aging Journey, Alli and Shawna continue their very personal decade-by-decade conversation—this time moving through their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. If you listened to Part 1, you heard us go all the way back to childhood, our teen years, and our 20s. We shared stories about the experiences that shaped our relationship with fitness, health, and life—and discovered that even after years of doing this podcast together, there were things we didn't know about each other! This episode gets even more personal. As we move through our 30s and 40s, we talk about finding our paths, building careers, opening fitness businesses, relationships, major life transitions, and the unexpected challenges that can change your direction. Alli shares her experiences with fitness competitions and what it was like to be sidelined by health issues—something that challenged her identity and relationship with fitness in ways she didn't expect. Shawna opens up about raising kids, going through divorce, finding love again, and navigating the different chapters of her life while starting to build her career in fitness. And because this conversation takes us into the decades we're living right now, we also talk about what it means to age with purpose. Shawna shares what she has learned from being in her 60s, while Alli looks ahead to turning 50 and reflects on what this next chapter might hold. In this episode, we talk about: How our priorities changed as we entered our 30s Building careers and opening our own fitness businesses The challenges of balancing work, relationships, family, and personal growth The pivotal moments that changed the direction of our lives What happened when health issues forced Alli to step away from the fitness world she knew Shawna's experience raising children while building her career Divorce, starting over, and finding love again The surprising lessons we learned in our 40s How our relationships and priorities evolved through midlife The fears and concerns that came with getting older What turning 50 means to Alli How Shawna's perspective on aging has changed in her 60s The joys, challenges, and unexpected gifts of getting older Why lifelong learning and staying curious matter at every age How our hobbies, friendships, careers, and passions continue to shape our lives One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that there isn't one right way to age. Our lives have included successes, setbacks, reinvention, relationships, heartbreak, health challenges, career changes, and plenty of unexpected turns. And yet, every decade has given us something that the next one needed. Healthy aging isn't about having a perfect plan or doing everything right from the beginning. It's about continuing to grow, adapt, learn, move forward, and decide what matters to you now. Whether you're in your 30s and building your life, navigating your 40s, approaching 50, or already in your 60s and beyond, we hope our stories remind you that your next chapter can be one of the best yet. So grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and get to know the women behind Girls Talk Healthy Aging a little better. And then ask yourself: What has each decade of your life taught you—and what do you want your next decade to look like? *Subscribe, Share, & Rate our Show. 146: Our Healthy Aging Journey: Childhood, Teens & Our 20s | Part 1

What does your childhood have to do with the way you age today? More than you might think! In this episode of Girls Talk Healthy Aging, Alli and Shawna take a break from interviewing experts and turn the microphones on themselves as they kick off a fun, personal two-part series about their healthy aging journeys. We're going decade by decade—from childhood through our 60s—looking at the experiences, choices, challenges, relationships, and pivotal moments that have shaped who we are today. And we're starting at the beginning: childhood, our teen years, and our 20s. You may know Alli as a fitness professional and Shawna as a trainer, Olympic weightlifting competitor, and someone who has navigated her own journey through aging and hip replacements. But were we always this focused on fitness and healthy aging? Not necessarily! In this episode, we share stories about our childhood interests, hobbies, sports and activities, the people who influenced us, and the experiences that helped shape our relationship with movement and health. Then we move into our teen years and 20s—the decades when interests evolved, life started moving faster, and we began laying the foundation for the people we would eventually become. We talk about: The hobbies and activities we loved as kids—and how they influenced our lives today Whether we were actually "fit" as children or if that story is more complicated The role models and experiences that encouraged us to stay active Challenges we faced when it came to movement and fitness How our interests and priorities changed during our teenage years The pivotal moments that shaped our attitudes toward fitness Graduation, first jobs, and other major life changes in our 20s The biggest challenges we faced during our 20s How our values began to develop and influence our choices What we wish we could tell women in their 20s today But perhaps the best part of this conversation is that we learned things about each other, too! Even after doing a podcast together for over 3 years, there were stories and details that Alli and Shawna hadn't heard from one another. So if you've ever wondered what shaped the women behind Girls Talk Healthy Aging, this is your chance to get to know us a little better. And there's a bigger lesson here: healthy aging doesn't begin when you turn 40, 50, or 60. It's a lifelong journey. The habits we develop, the experiences we have, and the way we learn to care for ourselves evolve throughout every decade. This is Part 1 of our Healthy Aging Journey series, covering childhood, the teen years, and our 20s. In Part 2, we'll continue through our 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s—and trust us, there are plenty more stories to tell! Listen in, laugh with us, and get to know Alli and Shawna beyond the microphones. Because healthy aging isn't about suddenly becoming a different person. It's about understanding where you've been, learning from every decade, and deciding how you want to move forward. *Did you enjoy this episode? Subscribe, Share, & Rate our Show. Is back pain just something we have to accept as we get older? Or is there a better way? In this episode of Girls Talk Healthy Aging, Alli Kerr and Shawna Kaminski sit down with Dr. Mat Frankel, DC, of Lowcountry Chiropractic, to separate fact from fiction when it comes to hip and back pain. If you've ever dealt with a stiff lower back, aching hips, or wondered if you should exercise through pain, this conversation is packed with practical advice you can start using today. Dr. Frankel shares why so many adults develop chronic pain, how modern lifestyles contribute to it, and why movement—not rest—is often the key to feeling better. He also explains why resistance bands are one of the most overlooked tools for building strength, improving mobility, and reducing pain, regardless of your fitness level. You'll learn: Why back pain is not an inevitable part of aging. The everyday habits that quietly contribute to hip and lower back pain. When it's safe to keep moving—and when it's time to seek professional evaluation. Why resistance bands can be just as effective (and sometimes better) than traditional weights. The biggest mistakes people make when trying to fix hip or back pain on their own. How weak hips and poor core stability can create pain throughout the body. Simple "movement snacks" you can do in just a few minutes to reduce stiffness if you sit for long periods. Common myths about back pain treatments and quick-fix gadgets. The exciting future of treating musculoskeletal pain and what new research means for healthy aging. 144: Hip Replacement Recovery at 49: What Surprised Me Most

If you heard my decision to have a hip replacement at 49, this is the update you've been waiting for. If you haven't listened to that episode yet, we recommend starting there first: Should You Keep Living With Hip Pain? My Decision to Have a Hip Replacement at 49. Then come back for this honest recovery update. Hip replacement surgery isn't just about what happens in the operating room—it's about everything that comes after. In this episode of Girls Talk Healthy Aging, Alli shares a candid update on her first three weeks after total hip replacement surgery. Recovery didn't go exactly as planned. There were unexpected setbacks, frustrating moments, and questions about whether she was "behind" compared to where she thought she should be. But there were also incredible wins that reminded her why she chose surgery in the first place. Alli and Shawna discuss: What the first three weeks of hip replacement recovery were really like The unexpected breathing complication that sent Alli to the emergency room How she was initially misdiagnosed with bronchitis and acute asthma The surprising discovery that the real problem was atelectasis (collapsed air sacs in the lungs) and how treating it changed everything How improved breathing led to better sleep, more movement, and a major turning point in recovery What movements and exercises Alli is already able to do after surgery Why recovery isn't always a straight line—and why comparing yourself to others can be misleading The conversation also takes an important turn as Alli shares one of the biggest obstacles she faced before surgery: having her insurance company deny coverage just days before the procedure. Even after an appeal was denied, she made the difficult decision to move forward because the pain, loss of mobility, and declining quality of life had become too great to ignore. Together, Alli and Shawna discuss what it means to truly value your body, advocate for your health, and make informed decisions with your physician rather than allowing someone far removed from your care to determine your future. Sometimes investing in your health today is what makes the next several decades possible. Having undergone both hip replacements herself, Shawna brings the perspective of someone who has already walked this road. She reminds Alli—and every listener—that while recovery can feel all-consuming in the moment, it's only a small chapter in a much bigger story of strength, mobility, and living fully. And yes...it's official. Shawna and Alli are now bionic twins. Whether you're considering hip replacement surgery, recovering from one, caring for someone who is, or simply want to keep moving well as you age, this episode offers encouragement, practical insights, and hope for what's possible on the other side of pain. Also check out: In Episode 3, Shawna shares her own hip replacement journey, what she learned from replacing both hips, and why she'd make the same decision again. If this episode encouraged you, please follow the Girls Talk Healthy Aging Podcast, leave us a five-star review, and share this episode with a friend, sister, or workout partner.
