Welcome to Spartan Spirit - Rescuing Reason. This podcast examines critical political and socioeconomic topics affecting Western cultures, particularly Australia, Canada, and the US. The point being to ground-truth the issues and bring reason back to the discussion. The podcast will do it through a logical, scientific, and most importantly, a Spartan lens, i.e., through a tough-minded view that considers the nation and the planet above the individual. The podcast will be published monthly around the first weekend of each month (usually a Friday). You can send comments and suggestions to spartan.spirit@yahoo.com or look for Spartan Spirit on Facebook and pm me. Those looking for Seasons 1 and 2 - well, they were deleted by my provide (because I paused the show for a year). I will eventually relist them.

    Rescuing Reason - E 17 - Carbon and Climate Pt 2

Europe sweltering; the Pacific Ocean at a record surface temperature; Australia's hottest August ever.... symptoms of the impact of Carbon. This episode continues the exploration of the relationship between Carbon and Climate.

    Rescuing Reason - E 16 - Carbon and Climate Pt 1

With Spain, France and Greece burning; Australia having one of its warmest winters ever; the Pacific Ocean El Nino Index at very high levels (some now calling it Super El Nino); and Polar ice melting like we've never seen, now is a good time to review the topic of CLIMATE. Central to the discussion is carbon and its role in global warming. This episode of Rescuing Reason is a rehash of Episode 7 of Spartan Spirit Season One, with some updated facts and figures about Carbon and how it affects our atmosphere. Parts 2 and 3 (coming out 1 Sep and 1 Oct) will look at what's being done about it. Note - This episode was recorded in early 2026, thus does not refer to the current weather trends.

    Rescuing Reason - E15 - Iran Pt 4 - War Crimes

What is a War Crime? You hear the media, politicians, just about everyone talking about war crimes associated with the Iran-US-Israeli (and Palestine) war. But do those pundits really understand the law? Quite often they are dead wrong. More importantly, is the modern interpretation of the Laws of War still valid - particularly in light of how wars are being fought in 2026? This episode of Rescuing Reason concludes a four-part series on Iran and the 2026 conflict with the US+Israel. In particular, the complicated topic of war crimes is addressed in the context of this war. It's a whopper of a topic, hence it's a long episode - Enjoy learning all about "The Laws of War", or more in its modern form "International Humanitarian Law".

    Rescuing Reason - E14 - Iran Pt 3 - State Terrorism

The 2026 conflict between the US/Israel and Iran was supposedly started to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon capability, but there is a good argument that says Iran should be attacked because it sponsors proxy wars and state terrorism. This episode is the 3rd episode in a 4-part series on Iran. It considers whether going to war over the Iran's state-sponsored terrorism or proxy wars is "ethical" or a "Just" cause for war - under the 'Laws of War' or 'Just War Theory'. The 'legal' reasons for going to war are detailed, along with a deep review of Iran's 'behavior' since the Islamic revolution. The actual conduct of the war is covered in part 4 of this series, due for publication end-June 2026.

    Rescuing Reason - E13 - Iran Pt2 - Nuclear Threat

The 2026 conflict between the US/Israel and Iran was supposedly started to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon capability. The nuclear weapon threat could be curtailed through destruction of the related systems (thereby removing the capability) or by causing regime change (thereby removing the intent). This episode is the 2nd episode in a 4-part series on Iran. It considers whether going to war over the nuclear threat is "ethical" or a "Just" cause for war - under the 'Laws of War' or 'Just War Theory'. The 'legal' reasons for going to war are detailed, along with a deep review of Iran's nuclear capabilities. One must also consider that Iran's proxy wars and state-sponsored terrorism are justification for going war, but that is covered in part 3 of this series on Iran. The actual conduct of the war is covered in part 4 of this series.

    Rescuing Reason - E12 - Iran Pt1 - The History

The 2026 conflict between the US/Israel and Iran has a long history, arguably traceable to the mid-20th century. This multi-part series looks at how Iran was shaped over millennia to become the force it is today; the roots of the modern day conflict; the key issues (Iranian anti-West behavior [through proxies too], its nuclear program, state-sponsored terrorism, and its oppressive regime); analysis of the current conflict, and concludes with a look to the future. This first episode takes us through Iran's history with a focus on the last 100 years and how that shaped Iran to be anti-West.

Rescuing Reason - E11 - Gender in Sports Pt 2

The 2026 Winter Olympics are over and only one openly transgender athlete competed - Elis Lundholm. Elis was born as a female, identifies as a man, and competed in women's skiing (finishing 25th). Thus, the recent winter Olympics did not have to deal with criticism over biological males identifying as women and competing in women's categories. However, this issue remains a feature of many sports and will certainly feature in the next summer Olympics. This podcast episode concludes a two-part series looking at the issues around gender in sports.

Rescuing Reason - E10 - Gender in Sports Pt 1

The 2026 Winter Olympics are starting shortly after this episode is published, and that means there will, yet again, be controversy over gender classification. This episode is part one of a two-part series exploring the issues related to sex vs gender in organized sports.
