I get asked what I learn most from hosting this podcast... I just turned 47, and after one of the most challenging 18 months of my life, I’ve been thinking about the things I wish I had understood much earlier. Nobody Warns You About This... So in this solo episode of Life On Purpose Over 40, I’m sharing 47 life lessons I learned the hard way — about relationships, people pleasing, boundaries, starting over after 40, money, confidence, motherhood, health, business, ageing and finally caring a lot less about what other people think. These are not inspirational quotes or things that sound good on Instagram. They are lessons I’ve actually lived. I’ve learned that people lie — even when the evidence is right in front of them. That some people will never admit they were wrong, no matter how much proof you have. That you can waste years explaining yourself to someone who is committed to misunderstanding you. And perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned that you do not need everyone to hear your side of the story. We talk so much about “finding ourselves” in midlife, but I think many women over 40 already know who they are. The bigger challenge is learning to stop abandoning ourselves to keep everybody else happy. In this episode, I talk about what I now believe about love and relationships, why actions matter more than words, why a long relationship isn’t necessarily a successful one, why “no” really can be a complete sentence, and why walking away can sometimes be the healthiest decision you make. I also share what I’ve learned about starting over in midlife. At 45, I found myself starting again in a country that wasn’t my own, with a young daughter and a life that looked nothing like I had expected it to. And this is something I wish every woman knew: Starting again does NOT mean starting from zero. You take your experience, knowledge, strength, mistakes and everything life has already taught you with you. We also get into financial independence for women, knowing your worth in business, why working harder isn’t always the answer, protecting your time, strength training after 40, looking after the body that needs to carry you into your 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond — and what motherhood has taught me about the example our children are watching us set. Because at 47, I’ve realised something else: I’m not running out of life. I may only be halfway through it. And I have absolutely no intention of spending the next 47 years trying to become more acceptable to everybody else. If you’re a woman in your 40s, 50s or beyond who is starting over, rebuilding after divorce or a difficult relationship, questioning what you want next, reinventing your career, learning to set boundaries, rebuilding your confidence or simply realising that you want MORE from the next chapter of your life — this episode is for you. Your best years do not have to be behind you. You are not behind. And you are not starting from scratch. You’re starting again with better information. Tell me in the comments: What is ONE lesson life taught you the hard way? And if you could sit down with your 30-year-old self today, what would you tell her?
