045: A Conversation with Lawrence Grieve, Is the Sacrifice Worth It?

045: A Conversation with Lawrence: Is the Sacrifice Worth It? In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I sit down with Lawrence, a natural bodybuilder, coach, physiotherapist, and podcaster. Lawrence is the host of The General Muscle Podcast, part of the Bodybuilding Down Under podcast, and someone I have known through competing for a number of years. He is also someone I have a huge amount of respect for, both as an athlete and as someone who contributes a lot to the natural bodybuilding space. In this conversation, we get to know Lawrence’s journey, from his early love of sport, particularly cricket, to finding the gym, working with a bodybuilding coach, and stepping on stage for his first competition at just 17 years old. We talk about how bodybuilding became a competitive outlet after sport, why training needs to feel purposeful for him, and the difference between simply exercising and training with direction. We also discuss what he achieved and learned through competing, the sacrifices involved, the impact on his relationship with his long term partner, and how his perspective has changed over time. A big theme in this episode is sacrifice. Bodybuilding was once worth the sacrifice for Lawrence, but as his life, goals and priorities evolved, that started to change. We talk through that transition, including his move from bodybuilding into preparing for an ultra marathon, what drove the change, and what he is excited about as his own journey continues to evolve. Key topics include• Lawrence’s early love of sport and cricket• starting bodybuilding at 17 years old• why he wanted a competitive purpose behind training• the difference between training and exercise• falling into bodybuilding and then falling in love with training• what competing taught him• the sacrifices involved in bodybuilding• the impact of competing on his relationship• knowing when the sacrifice is worth it, and when it may no longer be• coaching alongside his work as a physiotherapist• podcasting through The General Muscle Podcast and Bodybuilding Down Under• transitioning from bodybuilding into ultra marathon preparation• finding new challenges and evolving beyond one identity At the heart of this episode is a conversation about purpose, identity, sacrifice and evolution. Bodybuilding was a huge part of Lawrence’s journey, and for that season of his life, the sacrifice was worth it. But as he shares, what was once worth it may not always feel worth it forever, and that is part of growing, changing, and finding the next challenge. Whether you are a bodybuilder, coach, athlete, or someone trying to understand what drives you, there is a lot to take from this conversation. 044: The Goal Is Not the Hard Part

044: The Goal Is Not the Hard Part In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I share a shorter solo episode around a simple but important idea. The goal is not the hard part. Choosing the goal is usually easy. Saying you want to lose weight, build muscle, compete, earn a pro card, feel confident, get stronger or change your body is easy. The harder part is living in alignment with that goal. In this episode, I talk about the gap between the result someone wants and the standards they are willing to live by. Whether the goal is fat loss, muscle gain, competing, confidence or becoming PRO in your own world, the real work is understanding what the goal requires and being willing to live the process. I also share a personal reflection around competing. For me, I do not necessarily love competing because of stepping on stage. What I love most is the process. Having something to work towards, testing my standards, seeing what I can bring out of myself, and finding out who I become through the preparation. Key topics include• why choosing the goal is usually the easy part• why living in alignment with the goal is where people get tested• the difference between wanting the result and wanting the process• why different goals require different standards• the role of intrinsic motivation in staying connected to the process• why the stage is the result, but the process is what you live• why you cannot expect serious results from casual standards• what it means to become PRO in your own world At the heart of this episode is a simple reminder. Wanting the result is easy. Living in alignment with it is where it gets real. 043: Why Do You Actually Want It?

In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I share a solo episode around a question that comes up all the time in coaching, but also one I have had to understand for myself over the years. Why do you actually want it? Most people know what they want. They want to lose weight, build muscle, feel more confident, compete, win, earn a pro card, stop restarting, or simply feel better in themselves. And there is nothing wrong with any of that. But knowing what you want is only the first layer. The deeper question is why. Why does it matter? Why now? And are you connected enough to that reason to actually live through the process required to get there? In this episode, I share how my own fitness journey started with confidence, not feeling like I looked my age, and wanting to feel different in myself. Over time, training became more than just a way to change my body. It became part of my identity, my standards, my discipline, and the way I showed up in life. I also talk about competing, and why for me, it has always been about seeing what I am capable of. The trophies, placings and outcomes matter, but the deeper reason is the pursuit, the process, and finding out what level I can reach when I commit to something fully. Key topics include• why most people know what they want, but not why it really matters• the difference between the surface goal and the deeper reason• why the goal gives you direction, but the reason gives you staying power• how training started as confidence and became identity• wanting to lose weight, look better, and feel more confident• why clients often want more than just the physical result• confidence, self trust, pride, identity and proving to yourself you can follow through• why wanting the result is not the same as wanting the process• the reality of chasing a physique goal, show, win or pro card• why the outcome cannot be the only thing that gives the process value• how your reason can change as you grow• using the three whys to understand your goal more clearly• what it means to be PRO in your own world At the heart of this episode is a simple reminder. The goal gives you direction, but the reason gives you staying power. If you are not clear on why you want it, it becomes much easier to drift, restart, make excuses, negotiate with the habits, or chase something that was never really yours to begin with. Whether you are trying to lose body fat, build muscle, compete, earn a pro card, improve your health, or finally become someone who follows through, this episode will help you think deeper about the reason behind the goal. 042: A Conversation with Tom Watson: Don’t Sacrifice Everything

In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I sit down with Tom, a Personal Trainer and coach on the Gold Coast, an ICN Men’s Fitness Pro, and someone I first met around 5 years ago through a posing class I was assisting with. Tom is 24 years old, originally from a small country town, and has a story that goes far beyond bodybuilding. Before fitness and competing became such a big part of his life, Tom found himself in dance classes, specifically ballet, which played a major role in shaping who he is today. In this conversation, we talk through his journey from ballet, to moving to the Gold Coast, to discovering the fitness scene, building a successful coaching business, and recently earning his pro status at the ICN National Championships. A big theme in this episode is identity. Tom opens up about questioning whether he truly loved ballet, or whether he was doing it because people told him he was good at it. We also discuss how bodybuilding can become part of who you are, without needing to become your whole identity. Tom shares honestly about his early approach to nutrition, competing for the first time, post show struggles, self sabotage, and the importance of having support around you before, during and after a prep. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is his reflection on the danger of sacrificing everything for the pursuit of a pro card, only to look around when you finally achieve it and realise you have no one beside you. We also discuss what it really means to turn pro. At first, Tom saw it as something tied to external validation, but over time it became much more personal. It became about the progress, the ups and downs, the sacrifices, the lessons, and the internal gratitude he had for the process. Key topics include• Tom’s journey from a small country town to the Gold Coast• the role ballet played in his life and development• questioning whether you love something or just love being good at it• finding the right environment and the people who bring out your best• moving to the Gold Coast and seeing how alive the fitness scene was• building a coaching business working primarily with young men• the shift in identity that comes through training and competing• why bodybuilding can be something you do without becoming all that you are• early nutrition lessons and learning through stereotypes• post show struggles, self sabotage and the importance of support• why accountability after competing matters• becoming an ICN Men’s Fitness Pro• why a stacked line up should not be used as an excuse• what turning pro meant to Tom personally• why the pro card is not the end point• the importance of leaning on others and not making bodybuilding a lonely sport At the heart of this episode is a clear message. The goal matters, but so does the person you become while chasing it. Turning pro was a huge achievement for Tom, but what stands out most in this conversation is the honesty behind the process. The identity shifts, the lessons, the mistakes, the support, the sacrifice, and the realisation that success means more when you have people around you to share it with. Whether you are a competitor, coach, bodybuilder, or someone trying to find your own path, there is a lot to take from this conversation. If this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone in your circle who might need this message right now. 041: The Story You Tell Yourself

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I share a solo episode that extends on some of the themes from episode 039, Good Is Not Always Good Enough. In that episode, I spoke about the idea that sometimes what you are doing is good, but not good enough for the next level. This episode takes that idea one step further by looking at the gap between perception and reality. Because sometimes the issue is not just what you are doing, but how accurately you are seeing what you are doing. Your perception is powerful, but it is not always accurate. In this episode, I talk about how the story you tell yourself can shape the way you respond to your effort, progress, discipline and results. Some people believe they are doing everything, but when you look closer, there are gaps they have not seen yet. Others feel like they are failing, when in reality, they are building habits, improving, and doing better than they give themselves credit for. I also share a personal story from my own fitness journey, where I thought I was doing everything I needed to do to build muscle. I was eating healthier, prepping meals, training hard, and following the idea of being in a calorie surplus, but looking back, I can see that I understood the concept without fully understanding the application. Key topics include  • the gap between perception and reality  • why your perception is powerful, but not always accurate  • thinking you are doing everything, but missing key details  • why nutrition and tracking errors are more common than people realise  • why different goals require different levels of discipline  • how the standard needs to match the goal  • focusing too much on scale weight and missing the habits being built  • why post show or post goal phases can feel like failure  • learning from mistakes without becoming a victim  • the role of coaching in helping people see clearly  • checking the evidence before believing the story  • what it means to be PRO in your own world At the heart of this episode is a simple reminder. Before you decide you are doing everything, check the evidence. Before you decide you are failing, check the evidence. Because if you cannot see clearly, you cannot respond properly. Whether you are working towards a physique goal, trying to lose body fat, building muscle, competing, transitioning out of a big goal, or simply trying to become better in your own world, this episode will help you look at your progress with more honesty, more ownership and more perspective. 040: A Conversation with Daniel Yates, The Job Is Not Done

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I sit down with Dan, also known as DY, one of the best prep coaches in Australia, a Men’s Physique competitor, and someone I have known for a number of years through the bodybuilding and coaching world. Dan is someone I have a huge amount of respect for, not only because of the results he helps create with his athletes, but because of the standard he holds himself to as a coach, competitor and person. In this conversation, we talk through where his competitive nature first started, why he was drawn to solo sports, and how that mindset eventually carried into bodybuilding, competing and coaching. From early days in the gym, long training sessions, plenty of volume, nutrition lessons, and learning through trial and error, Dan shares the journey behind how he built himself into the athlete and coach he is today. We also go deep into the reality of competition preparation. The discomfort, the sacrifice, the pressure, the relationships, and the level of discipline required when things stop feeling good and the backend of prep gets hard. A major theme in this episode is learning from every experience. Dan talks about being grateful for placing second in his first show, how not winning can often keep athletes hungry, and why getting what you want too early can sometimes stop people from truly appreciating the work required to reach the highest level. We also discuss the idea that the pro card is not the end point. For highly competitive athletes, it can often be the beginning of a whole new level. The question then becomes whether you are willing to keep raising your standards, keep learning, and keep doing what is required. Key topics include • Dan’s competitive mindset from a young age • his early training years and lessons from the gym • nutrition, structure and the influence of family • junk volume, hard training and learning what actually matters • the discomfort and sacrifice required in prep • why not winning can teach you more than winning early • the pro card not being the final destination • relationships, support and understanding the demands of competing • learning from every show as both an athlete and coach • avoiding complacency after success • coaching athletes with high standards and genuine care • managing personal competing goals while supporting clients • what separates people who want results from people willing to uphold the standard • learning from mistakes and refusing to play the victim One of the most powerful parts of this episode is hearing how much Dan cares about his athletes. Yes, he loves winning, but it is clear that helping his clients win, improve and achieve what they set out to do means just as much to him. At the heart of this conversation is a clear message. The job is not done. Whether you win, place, fall short, earn a pro card, coach an athlete through a successful season, or reach a new level in your own journey, there is always more to learn, more to refine, and another standard to rise to. 039: Good is Not Always Good Enough

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I share a shorter solo episode around a theme that continues to come up through coaching conversations, client check ins, guest episodes, and my own life. The idea is simple. Good is not always good enough. Not because what you are doing is bad, and not because you need to be perfect, but because sometimes what worked for where you were is not enough for where you want to go next. In this episode, I share a personal story from my time working as an architect, when I thought I was making great nutrition choices for my goals. A simple conversation with a colleague changed the way I looked at food, structure, portions, preparation, and what it really means to eat with intention. That one conversation helped open my eyes to a completely different level of understanding around nutrition, which later led me into competing, studying nutrition, and eventually leaving architecture to build a career in fitness. Key topics include • why good choices are not always the best choices for your goal • the difference between eating healthy and eating with intention • why being open to feedback can change everything • how pride can keep us stuck without us realising • why what got you here might not get you there • how this applies to bodybuilding, competing, and chasing the next level • why results are not always in your control, but effort and response are • the importance of staying curious, humble and coachable • what it means to be PRO in your own world At the heart of this episode is the reminder that every new level usually requires a new level of understanding. Whether you are stepping into the gym for the first time, chasing a physique goal, competing, building a business, or trying to grow in any area of life, the message is the same. Stay open. Stay coachable. And be willing to ask, “what am I not seeing?” If you enjoyed this episode and want more insights, resources, giveaways, and deeper thoughts around the podcast topics and coaching conversations we discuss here, you can join the PRO YOU newsletter through the link in my Instagram bio. 038: A Conversation with Mia Blackburn, Make it Happen or Make Excuses

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of PROCAST BY JOSH, I sit down with Mia, a Pro Bikini competitor, ICN QLD judge, single mum, and someone whose story has so much more depth than what you see on stage. Mia has achieved incredible success as a competitor, earning three pro cards across her journey. But this conversation is not just about titles, placings, or the final physique. It is about everything behind it. We talk through Mia’s journey into health and fitness, from first getting into cardio without really knowing what she was doing, to eventually finding bodybuilding and learning how much structure, guidance, effort and patience the sport truly requires. Mia also opens up about being diagnosed with bipolar, becoming a mum while still in high school, and the role her family, especially her mum, has played in helping her through some of the most challenging parts of her life. A major theme throughout this episode is the idea that success is not about simply “getting there.” As Mia shares, it is a journey, and every season brings new lessons. Even after competing multiple times, she talks about learning the hard way that each preparation requires the same level of effort, focus and respect for the process. We also discuss what it felt like receiving her pro card, dealing with imposter syndrome, and the realisation that becoming a pro is not the finish line. In many ways, it is the start of another level. Key topics include  • Mia’s journey into training, cardio and eventually bodybuilding  • being a single mum and becoming a parent while still in high school  • living with bipolar and how it has shaped her life and mindset  • the importance of family support, especially the role of her mum  • competing across multiple seasons and earning three pro cards  • the value of having the same coach across multiple preps  • learning to compare yourself only to yourself  • managing the mental side of competing and stepping up as a pro  • miscarriage, post competition challenges and the importance of support  • why reverse dieting is such an important part of prep  • chasing the next goal, including Mia’s pursuit of an IFBB Pro card  • making it happen instead of making excuses At the core of this episode is a powerful reminder that life will always bring challenges, but we still have a choice in how we respond. Mia’s story shows the importance of resilience, personal responsibility, support, and continuing to find a way forward even when things feel difficult. As she shares in the episode, if something is not feeling right, or you feel like you are failing, do not give up. Try something slightly different, and you may find the path that works for you.
