High Taxes are the Cost of Unlimited Individualism

Truly unlimited individualism paradoxically requires higher taxes because responsibilities once handled by families and tight-knit, high-trust communities are outsourced to the state. Maximal individual freedom—freedom from family obligations, saving money, and community moral enforcement—depends on a large welfare and regulatory state funded by high taxation, raising questions about freedom versus responsibility. When Millionaires Can't Afford Their Own Lives

Asset Rich, Cash Poor: The Hidden Problem of High Net Worth but Low Income Nick contrasts the common “HENRY” profile (high earners, not yet rich) with the opposite: people who have high net worth on paper but modest income and little liquidity. He explains how modern asset appreciation and market frictions create “asset rich, cash poor” situations, using examples like retirees with multi-million-dollar homes but Social Security-level income, startup founders with valuable equity but low salaries, business owners whose company valuations outpace personal cash flow, and investors with large gains but low cost basis and high capital-gains taxes. He outlines why this creates “rich people problems” without the cash to solve them—estate planning costs, prenups/divorce risks, tax bills, social pressure, and difficulty hiring advisors. Potential solutions include secondary sales of private equity, securities-backed lines of credit, collars to hedge concentrated positions, reverse mortgages, and structured family loan arrangements. What is the Most “Irrelevant” Big City in the World

This episode argues that city relevance isn’t determined by population alone but by factors like wealth-generating industries, cultural exports, quality employment and corporate presence, political power, tourist appeal, universities, sports teams, geography, and trade access. After outlining these drivers and noting their connection to economic success, it asks which large city is surprisingly irrelevant despite nearing a million people. It lists honorable mentions including Fresno, Virginia Beach/Newport News, and several international cities often tied to declining industrial importance, then names El Paso, Texas as the least relevant big city of its size, citing limited Fortune 500 presence, pro sports, elite universities, direct flights, distinctive culture or attractions, major political power, and media-market influence. It explains El Paso’s growth mainly through a large nearby Army base and cross-border trade with Juarez, and notes El Paso is unusually safe despite its proximity to a dangerous city. 00:00 What Makes Cities Relevant 00:17 Wealth and Industry Hubs 00:57 Culture and Job Quality 02:10 Power Tourism and Geography 04:17 The Irrelevance Challenge 05:33 Honorable Mentions Worldwide 09:08 Why El Paso Tops List 10:28 El Paso Relevance Breakdown 13:23 How El Paso Got Big 14:30 Final Takeaways Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Why You Still Shouldn’t Pursue YouTube as a Career (100K+ Subs Update)

Nick follows up on a past video after growing from about 1,200 to 115,000 subscribers, launching tours, a Substack, and merch, and learning more about YouTube’s business potential and community-building. Despite the channel’s growth, he still argues YouTube doesn’t make sense as a standalone career because shorts-driven algorithms often produce large followings with low revenue, the odds of earning a sustainable income remain extremely small (roughly 0.25% reach 100K+ subs/$10K per month), and creator income is volatile due to cycles in audience interest, burnout, and platform dynamics. He compares success odds and career longevity to professional sports and shows similarly low earning rates across Instagram, TikTok, X, Patreon, and Substack. The Median American Life Is Worse Than You Think

The Median Life Isn’t “Good”: What an Average 40-Year-Old Really Looks Like (US vs Europe & Asia). Nick challenges the myth that the “average” person lives well, arguing that median outcomes in health, wealth, relationships, work, and meaning are often suboptimal even in past economic “glory days.” He cites U.S. life expectancy, widespread chronic conditions and obesity, rising depression, and a skewed wealth distribution where median net worth is far below the mean and often tied up in home equity or retirement accounts. He describes declining marriage rates, significant divorce risk, low friendship counts and loneliness, low workplace engagement, strained family ties, nominal religious identity with low practice, screen-heavy leisure time, and notable substance addiction prevalence. Comparing regions, he says Europe offers better health floors and work-life balance but lower pay, while developed Asia has long life expectancy but lower happiness. He attributes inflated expectations to survivorship bias and compounding daily decisions, concluding people aren’t doomed to be median if they aim higher.
