The Gurus & Griots program is a selective, cohort-based fellowship that puts African and Afro-descendant leaders front and center as educators and representatives of IE University. The yearlong program addresses global challenges and helps develop and showcase the unique perspectives of the fellows, incorporating their work into the IE University ecosystem. In this podcast series, Eniola Harrison, the Director of the Africa Center at IE University embarks on conversations with some of the Gurus and Griots fellows and talks about their areas of specialization. This results in intriguing and thought-provoking discussions.     Innovative Healthcare Models with George Ayeh

    George is the CEO of Fastcare Clinics in Ghana and is a healthcare enthusiast. According to George, there are three main barriers to healthcare in Africa: financial, geographical, and psychological. In George’s episode, he tells us that 40% of Ghanaian citizens don’t have healthcare, so his company tries to make it more accessible by addressing these three barriers. He also discusses what COVID-19 taught African nations about having to be able to fend for themselves in times of crisis.     Black Contributions to European History with Antumi Toasije

    Antumi is a professor at several universities, including New York University. His studies center on African communities in Spain and promoting awareness of African culture and history. In this episode, Antumi walks us through the history and impact of African people in Spain. He tells us that in 3000 BC the entire population of Spain was black and remained largely so until many of them were expelled during the dethronement of Carlos III in the 17th century. Antumi talks about Spain’s conscious effort to become more European and erase its African history, to the point where today, only four public universities in Spain offer African history courses. She describes herself as an access advocate, increasing access to commodities such as education, healthcare, financing, and information. In this episode, Beatrice talks about entrepreneurship as a very human story and a way to improve the way things are done. She expresses her concern for how Africa has become a dumping site for what the world doesn’t consume, and she stresses the need for more sustainable innovation initiatives like M-Pesa, the highly successful mobile money-transfer service that started in Kenya. She is the co-founder of Bright Insights Global, an organization which optimizes business performance in Africa. In this episode, Saidah talks about corporate innovation as a tool to drive positive change. She also discusses some projects she has been involved with, such as helping small farmers across sub-Saharan Africa and a storytelling initiative focusing on intergenerational connection and AI.     Let's talk Civil Rights with Patrice Juah

    Patrice is an IE alumna and has long been an advocate for civil rights, particularly in the area of girls’ education and women’s leadership. This stems from a childhood riddled with conflict, growing up amid the Liberian civil wars. In this episode, she communicates her thoughts on activism and the different ways individuals can demonstrate activism, be it through protesting, writing poetry, or simply sparking conversations. For a very interesting conversation- listen here! ----- Patrice es una antigua alumna del IE y lleva mucho tiempo defendiendo los derechos civiles, sobre todo en el ámbito de la educación de las niñas y el liderazgo de las mujeres. Esto se debe a una infancia plagada de conflictos, ya que creció en medio de las guerras civiles de Liberia. En este episodio, expone sus ideas sobre el activismo y las distintas formas en que las personas pueden demostrarlo, ya sea protestando, escribiendo poesía o simplemente suscitando conversaciones.     Creativity, Education & African History with Kwesi Amoak

    Kwesi Amoak is the founder and executive director of Mpuntusem, a Pan-African development and communication organization. He is also currently doing a PhD in African Studies at the University of Ghana. In this episode, he tells us about his ten-year journey studying creative pedagogy and how he sees teaching as a creative practice. Kwesi longs for teaching to be turned on its head and taken back to its roots as more of a sharing of knowledge rather than one person standing at the front of the classroom assuming a position of power.
