Good Movement Draws Good Movement

Terryn Drieling

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.  It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction. Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.  We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently. These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us. The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us. Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication. Hey, it’s me - T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement - things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.  We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.  Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! 156. How to Handle Your Kid's Big Emotions

In today’s episode, I’m talking about how to handle your kid’s big emotions. What do we say when they're angry, crying, covering their ears, or emoting loudly? Everything in us wants to tell them to just stop, and it can be so HARD. While every kid and situation is different, there's one approach I keep coming back to: validate, stay present, and help them regulate. Validation doesn't mean I always agree with what they’re doing. But I CAN notice what they're feeling, name it, and remind them that their emotions aren't too big for me. Sometimes, their big emotions bump against our own wounds, experiences, or unmet needs. Getting curious about those places and learning to give ourselves what we need can make their emotions feel less abrasive + help us show up for our kids in the ways they need! In this episode, I cover: The importance of validating a child's emotions + why it doesn’t mean we’re agreeing with themUsing presence + intentional breathing to help kids co-regulateHolding boundaries while still acknowledging big emotionsFinding safe, less-destructive ways to move anger through the bodyIncluding our kids in conversations about what helps them feel supportedGetting curious about WHY our kids' emotions can trigger usMeeting our own needs so we can better show up for theirs Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 155. Feeling Lonely in Your Marriage? Go From Roommate Mode to Reconnection

In today’s episode, I’m talking about feeling lonely in your marriage + how to go from roommate mode to reconnection. I’d be lying if I told you Tom and I have marriage completely figured out now. We still disagree, still trigger each other, and still fight (sometimes). The difference today? We’re coming to those moments with awareness, practices, and experience we didn't have before. Good, clear communication doesn't just happen. It requires self-awareness + a willingness to understand what's happening within ourselves BEFORE we can communicate well with someone else! Those hard seasons became balance points - moments when something had to move or change direction. They’re part of why I created Balance Point, a six-month group experience for rural women who feel lonely, emotionally depleted, or like they're everyone's last priority. It begins October 20th, 2026, and offers a safe, confidential space to reconnect with yourself + build healthier relationships alongside women who truly understand rural life! In this episode, I cover: How Tom and I found ourselves living in “roommate mode”Why poor communication can trigger our fight-or-flight responsesThe inner work that changed how I showed up in our relationshipWhy we can't force someone else to change or do their own workHow good movement within ourselves can create movement in our relationshipsRecognizing the “balance points” where something has to changeCreating connection and healthier relationships without sacrificing ourselves Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 154. Healing Isn't Linear and Other Things I Wish I'd Known

In today’s episode, I’m talking about why healing isn’t linear and other things I’d wish I’d known. Doing the work doesn't mean you'll never bump into an old wound again - you definitely will. But maybe it doesn't hurt quite as long, or you recognize what's happening sooner. You have new information, more capacity, and different tools to move through it. Healing can also be messy and super slow. As much as we might want to rush through the uncomfortable parts and just feel better already, healing is more of a slow burn. Most importantly, your healing has to be for YOU. When we draw good movement within ourselves, it naturally ripples into our closest relationships and continues outward from there! In this episode, I cover: Why healing isn't linear + old wounds may still hurt when we bump into themWhy healing can get messy before things begin to feel clearerWhy emotional healing is a slow burnWhy your healing ultimately has to be something you choose for yourselfHow doing our own inner work creates a ripple effect in our relationships Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 153. What to Do When You Don't Know What You Feel

In today’s episode, I’m talking about what to do when you don’t know what you feel. I’ve definitely been there. For a long time, I was comfortably numb and disconnected from what was happening inside my body. It wasn't until I experienced grief I could no longer hold that I really began learning how to feel again. Our bodies often speak before our minds do. But when we've spent years putting our heads down, powering through, and getting the job done, we become disconnected from the sensations our bodies are sending us. When we allow ourselves to feel the emotions we've spent years avoiding, we aren't only making room for anger, sadness, or grief. We're growing our capacity to experience joy, happiness, and excitement more fully, too! In this episode, I cover: Why it’s okay if you don't know what you're feeling yetHow a simple body scan can help build awareness of physical sensationsNoticing sensations in the body + connecting them to specific emotionsWhy emotions are simply informationHow curiosity helps us understand what our emotions are telling us Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 152. How We Really Toughen Kids Up

In today’s episode, I’m talking about how we really toughen kids up. Honestly, my own thoughts around this have shifted dramatically in recent years as I've done my own inner work + learned more about brain development, psychology, and emotions. Whether a child is taught to stop crying because they'll get a reward OR because they're afraid of what will happen if they don't, the result looks surprisingly similar. A kid learns to stop showing emotion without ever learning how to process it. Fear-based compliance might make a child quieter in the moment, but what’s that actually teaching them? I want to raise resilient, tough kids who can handle what life throws at them, too. I've just had a HUGE change of heart about how we get them there! In this episode, I cover: Why my perspective on “kids these days” has changedHow different parenting extremes can create surprisingly similar outcomesGetting honest about what we actually needed as kidsWhat it really looks like to raise tough, resilient kidsWhy kids need a softer place to land when they’re experiencing life lessons Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 151. We Don't Know How to Hold Grief

In today’s episode, I’m talking about how we don’t know how to hold grief. Over the last three years, I've experienced loss and uncertainty in ways I never anticipated. After my dad died suddenly in 2023, I knew I couldn't simply shove the grief down as I had before. Shortly before his death, I heard something that has stayed with me ever since: we don't know how to hold mystery, and we don't know how to hold grief. So, I found support and began learning how to experience grief (rather than run from it). We can learn to sit with grief, and allow it to deepen our compassion, love, and capacity for joy. THAT is part of being fully alive, too! In this episode, I cover: Why so many of us feel uncomfortable with griefWhy avoiding grief doesn't make it disappearLearning to hold both grief & uncertaintyHow seeking support changed my relationship with lossHow making room for sadness can deepen our capacity for joyWhy bright-siding can diminish someone's experience of griefBefriending grief instead of trying to numb or escape itThe secret to being fully alive Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 150. Talking Kids, Control, and Changing Minds with Tom

Tom is back for episode 150! In today’s episode, we’re talking kids, control, and changing minds. One thing that has drastically changed through our own inner work? How we respond to our kids’ emotions. We want them to know they can tell us when something we've said or done hurts them. We don't always get it right, but we want to listen, repair when needed, and give them room to feel, rather than teaching them to shut those feelings down. Realizing we don't have to stay exactly who we've always been is one of the greatest gifts of doing this inner work. Growth asks us to recognize that we may not have the whole picture AND stay curious enough to keep learning. Also, because this is episode 150, I'm giving one listener a container of WonderCow colostrum plus a one-hour Good Movement Guidance call with me! To enter, share this episode on Instagram, Facebook, or Threads. Be sure to tag me so I see it! In this episode, we cover: A glimpse into rural healthcare & life as volunteer EMTsLearning to recognize what is (and isn’t) within our controlHow we share the mental load & approach parenting as a teamGiving our kids space to communicate, feel, and disagree with usWhat we'd do differently knowing what we know nowWhy proximity & curiosity can change our perceptions of othersBecoming more willing to change our minds when we have new informationHow intentional inner work continues to shape our relationships + parenting Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! 149. Were You Taught Not to Cry? It Might Be Time to Unlearn That

In today’s episode, I’m diving into why you were taught not to cry, and why it might be time to unlearn that. For many of us, the message that crying isn't okay started early. Maybe you heard phrases like, "Dry it up," or "I'll give you something to cry about.” Maybe you grew up believing strength meant keeping your emotions hidden, or never letting your kids see you struggle. But hiding our emotions doesn't necessarily protect the people around us. It can actually reinforce the idea that tears are something to be ashamed of. Our tears have a purpose, and they need somewhere to go. You don't need to apologize for your tears, and you don't need to judge them. Sometimes, allowing yourself to cry is simply part of allowing yourself to be fully HUMAN. In this episode, I cover: Why so many of us apologize for cryingWhy hiding emotions doesn't necessarily protect our children3 types of tears + the purposes they serveThe unique benefits of emotional tearsWhat repressing emotions can really lead toChoosing to cry when YOU feel comfortable + also not holding them in forever Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!
