On the Road: Manifesta sheds light on Ruhr heritage

For this episode we’re taking a look at the Manifesta festival and this sixteenth edition of Europe’s nomadic biennial of contemporary art. Running from 21 June to 4 October 2026, it unfolds across the entire Ruhr region, taking in the major industrial centres of Bochum, Duisburg, Essen and Gelsenkirchen. Presented by John Beauchamp and Katarzyna Jagodzińska. In the podcast we hear from Founding Director of Manifesta Hedwig Fijen, who steps down from her post in October 2026, and veteran Polish curator, historian and art critic Anda Rottenberg. Under the title “This is not a church,” more than one hundred participating artists and collectives have transformed twelve church buildings into spaces for exhibitions, performances, workshops and community life. Only two remain consecrated, with one turned into a lay chapel. The others are closed, unused, in the process of deconsecration or have already been repurposed. Can Manifesta arts festival save Ruhr churches? Heritage is central to Manifesta as these churches hold more than architectural value. They carry memories of migration, industrial labour, faith and the rebuilding of communities after war. As their original functions change, the question becomes how to preserve those connections without freezing the buildings in time. Manifesta explores this through art and participation, inviting people to imagine new uses while engaging with the past. Here, heritage becomes a shared resource: a foundation for belonging, dialogue and collective life. “This is not a church” asks what can change - and what must be remembered - as these places enter their next chapter. In the podcast we also hear two sonic installations from Manifesta: Variation on Godspeed in 4/4 Time by William Engelen (Marienkirche, Essen)Ouranophobia 47051 by Abbas Zahedi (Kulturkirche Liebfrauen, Duisburg)

    Sounds of Heritage

Is sound heritage? Sound is inherent to every building, every object. A wind which whistles its way through a church door, the bustle of people on a market square, the echo inside a church or even farm machinery harvesting the year's crops... And yet, we still rarely think about sound as part of heritage. For this episode of Holistic Heritage, hosts John Beauchamp and Dr Katarzyna Jagodzińska are in the Portuguese town of Mafra at the UNESCO site of the Royal Buildings of the Palace, Basilica and Convent, where heritage and museum specialists have gathered to discuss sound in museums and heritage sites. In the episode, we speak to Alcina Cortez, a sonic researcher and founder of the Sound in Museums Conference, as well as Luisa Santos Professor at the Catholic University of Portugal and a curator at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, on the role of sound in heritage. As part of our endeavours of raising awareness of the sonic layer of heritage and making heritage sounds more accessible, the Europa Nostra Heritage Hub for Central and Eastern Europe has set up the Heritage Sound Register. While still in its initial phase, it aims to provide the public with free to use sounds. Among the sounds on the register you can hear a number of sound artefacts which are an inherent part of the cultural heritage of Central and Eastern Europe. In the podcast, you can hear the industrial complex in Dolni Vitkovice in Ostrava, a mechanical loom at Łódź's Central Museum of Textiles, a excavator at the Queen Louise Adit in Zabrze, and the Mocănița logging train in Romania's Maramureș region.
