The Lusiads: Read in European Portuguese

Episodes

  1. 11/27/2023

    Canto Segundo

A council of the gods in Olympus, where Jupiter foretells the future successes of the Portuguese in discovering new lands, while Bacchus, who fears the glory of the Portuguese might surpass his own, plots to obstruct their voyages. This canto effectively blends historical narrative with mythological elements to celebrate Portuguese maritime achievements.

  2. 10/29/2023

    Canto Primeiro

The first section of "Os Lusiadas" pays tribute to famous poets and a young king. It starts off similarly to other epic tales, showing Greek gods keeping tabs on Vasco da Gama's journey. Venus supports the Portuguese explorers, while Bacchus opposes them, viewing them as intruders in his eastern domain. The story jumps into the middle of da Gama's trip, just after passing the Cape of Good Hope. Bacchus, disguised as a Moor, tries to get local Muslims to attack da Gama and his crew.
