    The Final Nail: a Short Story by Dominick Domingo

    The Final Nail is a short story from host Dominick Domingo's latest collection, "Every Last Dragonfly." It's a compilation of short stories and essays that is largely a portrait of the sometimes thin veil between the material world and the metaphysical—the rare glimpses that can haunt or inspire—sustaining us in our daily toil. During our most recent episode, Dominick and co-host Virginia Grenier explored the chasm between appearances and reality—the very human need to fill in gaps in the unknown with conjecture, innuendo, gossip or even demonization of the 'other.' During that rich conversation, it dawned on Dominick that he'd been addressing that very phenomenon in his recent writings, most notably in The Final Nail. In that spirit, we're following up with an author reading of the piece. Hopefully you, as a listener, can connect it back to the more academic conversation that preceded it.     Beyond the Binary: Modeling Uncharted Territory through STORYTELLING

    It's human nature to 'flatten' a dimensional world into binary categories we can easily comprehend. Similarly, there is often a price attached to nuance and complexity. In this episode, we explore the impulse to enforce limiting tropes—from gender roles and relationship models to labels and institutions—frankly, every aspect of the human condition. In this episode, Dominick and Virginia draw from the literary realm and cinema as well as current events and headlines, to discuss how more empowering models are emerging...aspirational ones.   We also dig into how pop culture— streaming content, in particular— is rewriting the script with more diversity and nuance than ever, including platonic intimacy between men, fathers trying to show up differently, and characters whose identity is treated as matter-of-fact rather than a spectacle.     Nolan's The Odyssey: a Cultural Zeitgeist

    In this inspiring episode, we sit down with pastor and theologian Anthony Delgado to discuss the continuum between classical Greek mythology/philosophical tradition and burgeoning Christian doctrine. We identify the thought forms, tenets, characters or figures, enduring archetypes and story templates that thread STORY together over time, from both a comparative religion standpoint and a more esoteric, mystical lens. He sees the Bible as a single story of God's redemption from Genesis to Revelation and traces that narrative through the threads woven across Scripture.     Chapter Three Roundtable: Archetype in Modern Storytelling

    Archetypes aren’t dusty literary terms; they’re the shorthand your nervous system already speaks. We jump back into Chapter Three of Language of the Soul and ask the question underlying every indelible story: why do certain characters, symbols, storytelling templates and patterns persist over time, no matter how we evolve?           In this episode, Dominick and Virginia springboard off "Language of the Soul," Chapter Three, discussing the gamut from archetype to stereotype to cliche, as well as cultural relativity versus universality and the survival-based phenomenon of innate response to formal properties that becomes generalized in the human psyche for sheer survival. We discuss how this encoding on our collective psyche accounts for not just the meaning inherent in storytelling, but its resonance. Whether one subscribes to Jungian notions like the collective unconscious or takes the more empirical view that all tropes are imparted via social conditioning, the bottom line is the same: archetypes are the language we speak as artists.
