Understanding the Racket of Higher Education

College can be an extraordinary investment. It can also be an extraordinarily expensive way to avoid deciding what you want to do with your life. In this episode of the Aligned Money Show, George Grombacher examines the economics and incentives behind modern higher education: rising costs, taxpayer subsidies, student loans, administrative expansion, underemployment, and the accountability gap between universities and the students borrowing money to attend them. This isn't an anti-college argument. It's an argument for treating higher education like the enormous investment of time, attention, energy, and money that it is. You'll learn: • Why Milton Friedman questioned the economics of taxpayer-subsidized higher education• How the cost structure of public universities has changed• Why abundant financing can weaken price discipline• The role of administrative growth and why the right question is whether additional spending produces proportional value• Why student debt needs to be evaluated against expected outcomes• The financial-literacy irony of asking teenagers to make enormous borrowing decisions before teaching them how money works• Why college remains a great investment for many people—and a poor one for others• The questions every student and parent should ask before borrowing• How to compare college with community college, trades, apprenticeships, certifications, employer-funded education, military service, and entering the workforce The goal isn't a college degree. The goal is building a meaningful and prosperous life. Education should help you get there. Key takeaway: Don't ask, "Can I borrow the money?" Ask, "Should I borrow the money?" Before making one of the largest financial decisions of your life, ask good questions, demand good answers, do the math, and make the decision with your eyes wide open. Where Communism and Socialism Make Sense

Communism works great at the dinner table. Your kids don't submit invoices for dinner. Nobody gets a bigger bedroom for generating more household GDP. If one kid gets sick, you don't run a cost-benefit analysis before taking care of them. Everybody contributes according to their ability and receives according to their needs — and it works, because it's small, you know each other, you love each other, and Mom and Dad know what's going on. Socialism? There are things you're happy funding with your neighbors. But when it comes to organizing the productive energy of hundreds of millions of free people, give me markets, competition, property rights, entrepreneurship, and the freedom to succeed, fail, and try again. Don't destroy the greatest prosperity-producing machine humanity has found because some people figured out how to game it. Fix the game. Enforce the rules. Punish the cheaters. Restore competition, accountability, and trust — then let builders build. That's where communism and socialism make sense… and where they don't. Money Doesn't Have to Be This Hard...Does It?

Money Doesn't Have to Be This Hard...Does It? Does money feel harder than it should? Maybe the problem isn't that you're bad with money. Maybe you're trying to build a life around goals that don't belong to you—goals borrowed from Instagram, your neighbor, or even your partner. Your goals need to be yours. Money is supposed to support a life shaped by your values and priorities, not become a scoreboard for someone else's version of success. Get clear on what matters, choose meaningful goals, and decide what enough looks like. Most financial decisions aren't really about money. They're about family, freedom, security, opportunity, and peace of mind. The numbers matter because they help you protect and pursue those things. There's a science to money: returns, markets, risk, and trade-offs. But there's also an art to it. You can't personalize the markets to your preferences, so you have to personalize your life—to give the difficult decisions and sacrifices you're making today a reason. That's what it means to build wealth with alignment. As a Wealth Builder, you don't chase money for its own sake. You make money serve the life you're intentionally building. Build the life first. Then make the money serve it. Want to talk with a professional about where you are and where you want to go with your finances? The Perfect Financial Plan Doesn't Exist: Stop Looking for It

The perfect financial plan doesn’t exist. There are countless investment strategies, financial products, companies, and opinions about what you should do with your money. But financial literacy is what you know. Financial wellness is what you do. This episode explains why an imperfect plan you actually implement can be far more valuable than the “perfect” plan you never start. You’ll learn what makes a financial plan meaningful, why simplicity and execution matter, and how to build a plan around your goals, your reality, and your Meaningful Few. Stop waiting for perfect. Solving Your Personal Finance Murder Mystery

Your personal financial life is on life support. The police have been called. The crime scene has been secured. The detectives are collecting evidence, identifying suspects, establishing motive, and following the money. So…whodunnit? Inflation? Housing costs? Your employer? Your parents? Amazon? DoorDash? DraftKings? That $1,500 BMW payment? Or was the call coming from inside the house? In this episode of The Aligned Money Show, George Grombacher investigates the scene of your financial life. We talk about gathering the evidence, identifying the real victims of bad financial decisions, interrogating your spending habits, uncovering the motives behind your behavior, and taking responsibility for what happens next. Because while outside forces absolutely affect your finances, eventually you may find your own fingerprints somewhere on the murder weapon. And that’s good news. If you’re responsible for part of the problem, you can become responsible for the solution. Most financial decisions aren't really about money. They're about what's important: family, freedom, security, opportunity, and peace of mind.
