Navigating Identity and Self-Worth During Adolescence

Adolescence is a time of major transformation physically, emotionally, and socially. It’s during these formative years that teens begin to shape their sense of identity and self-worth. But while this process may feel deeply personal, it’s far from solitary. In this episode, we explore how relationships, social environments, and even technology influence a teen’s developing self-esteem and how parents can play an essential, informed role in supporting their growth. Joining us is Dr. Jay Lewis, a clinician with over 20 years of experience working with children and adolescents. He’s also the founder of Healthy Understanding, a wellness model designed to empower both parents and students with practical tools for personal development and emotional well-being. Together, we break down the key factors that impact adolescent self-esteem and share actionable strategies for parents who want to reinforce confidence and self-worth in their teens.

How Parents Can Strengthen Student Self-Esteem

For years, researchers have explored the connection between parenting styles and academic achievement—but what really defines success for students? Is it a high GPA, a well-rounded resume, or a strong sense of self-worth? While research on parenting styles and academic outcomes has produced mixed results, a 2005 study by the Academy of Management and Learning identified a different success marker: a student’s overall life satisfaction, something parents can influence. In this episode, we’re joined by Dr. Fangzhou Yu-Lewis, a clinician, counselor, educator, and core faculty member in the Counseling Department at Northwestern University. Dr. Yu-Lewis brings deep expertise in working with immigrant families, intergenerational dynamics, and emotional well-being. Together, we explore how parents can meaningfully support their teen’s self-esteem, and why that support is key not just for academic performance, but for lifelong success. Book referenced by Dr. Yu-Lewis: Good Inside: A Practical Guide to Resilient Parenting Prioritizing Connection Over Correction, by Dr. Becky Kennedy If you’d like to learn more about “Turning the View” or would like to reach Dr. Fangzhou Yu for her services, please reach her at yu.fangzhou.sabrina@gmail.com.

Did AI Kill The College Essay?

Less than two years ago, Chat GPT was released to the public and changed everything. 92% of Fortune 500 companies use generative AI, while 63% of teachers are warming up to the technology for lesson planning. While the business application of AI is somewhat benign, the usage eventually trickles down to students. Some educators cite difficulties with students using AI to complete at-home quizzes, write their essays, and in the case of Khan Academy’s Khanmigo, even tutor them. As time goes on, it may become more difficult to decipher machine-written assignments from humans. In recent months, Duke University announced that it would no longer apply a weighted grade to essays submitted through admissions. Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Christoph Guttentag stated, “We’re just no longer assuming that the essay is an accurate reflection of the student’s actual writing ability.” What does this mean for the college essay? Is it on its way to extinction, with other qualifying replacements in tow? Or will it evolve to stand the test of time? Knovva Education Connect speaks with Amy Hubbard, a veteran college counselor about AI-assisted writing and how students can stand out in the admissions process.

How Important is Teacher Autonomy in the Classroom?

The unsung key to teacher success is in finite availability, which some educators say no longer exists. Autonomy in the classroom is getting harder to hold onto as district success metrics take precedence over student success. In 2023, about 10% of Virginia’s Prince Edward County school district resigned, with their exit interviews showing a surprising reason. 25% of respondents claimed that their reason for leaving was due to “a lack of autonomy in instructional decisions and/or classroom management.” This month's episode discusses the need for teacher autonomy with Professor Connolly, a 35-year veteran educator and professor at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in Saudi Arabia and Senior Fellow at their Center for Futuristic Studies.

Extracurriculars in high school can do a lot more than fill up free time: they can also develop essential skills that follow students through life.
