Getting Into Film Festivals Is Not Enough!

Every feature needs more than a great idea. It needs a plan. In the newest episode of the Indie Coach Podcast, I sit down with Jon Fitzgerald, co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival and former director of AFI Fest, to discuss how filmmakers can create a roadmap that takes their projects from concept to audience. Too many filmmakers concentrate entirely on developing and producing the movie, only to begin thinking about their audience, festival strategy, marketing, and distribution after the film is finished. By then, many of the most important decisions have already been made. Jon and I discuss why the creative, financial, production, audience, festival, and distribution sides of a feature must work together from the beginning. We also explore what it really means to participate in a film festival. Getting accepted is not enough. Filmmakers have to prepare, rally their teams, invite the industry, engage audiences, generate publicity, and create momentum that continues long after the screening. Jon’s next Feature Blueprint Lab begins July 30. It is a five-week, small-group experience that helps filmmakers create a customized roadmap for bringing their films from concept to audience. There are only a few spots remaining. Learn more and register here: https://www.jonfitzgerald.pro/blueprint.html Email me for a discount code to receive 20% off. All the Best, Ron

You do not have to live in Hollywood to build a serious screenwriting career, but you do need to create leverage.

In this episode of the Indie Coach Podcast, filmmaker and screenwriter Clint Ross shares how he built momentum from outside the traditional Hollywood system and secured both management and agency representation. Clint breaks down the real work behind getting noticed, from screenplay competitions and platforms like Roadmap Writers and The Black List to developing relationships with companies such as Zero Gravity and Citizen Skull. He also explains why getting representation is not the finish line and why writers must continue creating opportunities for themselves. producingroom.com In this episode, you will learn: • How screenplay competitions and industry platforms can help create “heat” around your work • The difference between an agent and a manager, and what each can bring to your career • Why living outside Los Angeles does not automatically prevent you from finding representation • What Clint tried that did not work and what finally began opening doors • Why writing on spec and producing your own projects may still be necessary after signing with representation • How to redefine what a “win” looks like as a screenwriter • Why the hustle does not stop once someone agrees to represent you Clint’s story offers an honest look at the screenwriting business and a reminder that representation is not a rescue plan. It is one more tool that can help you move forward when you have already built something worth supporting.
