How Dentists Can Build Wealth, Scale Practices, and Think Beyond the Chair with Dr. Julia Jackson

In this episode of The Entrepreneur Dentist Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Julia Jackson, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, author, educator, and founder of the International Implant Institute. Dr. Jackson and I talk about what it really means to be an entrepreneurial dentist, even if you do not own a practice. We discuss her journey from Philadelphia to becoming the first practicing female African-American oral and maxillofacial surgeon in both Pennsylvania and Virginia, her work teaching general dentists advanced surgical procedures, and why continuing education is critical for doctors who want to expand beyond what they learned in dental school. We also get into the real business side of dentistry: DSOs, practice ownership, private equity, EBITDA, multiple arbitrage, scaling systems, mentorship, real estate, generational wealth, and the importance of knowing what you are signing before selling or joining any dental organization. One of the biggest themes in this conversation is growth. Whether you are a new dentist afraid to do basic procedures, a specialist looking to expand your business thinking, or a practice owner trying to scale without creating chaos, the lesson is the same: you have to keep learning, keep asking, and keep building systems. Dr. Jackson brings the surgical education perspective. I bring the practice ownership and DSO perspective. Together, we talk about how dentists can move beyond fear, get mentorship, build wealth, and get to the next level. In this episode, we discuss: How Dr. Julia Jackson built her career as an oral surgeonWhy general dentists should learn more advanced proceduresThe value of chairside mentoring and hands-on CEWhat DSOs get right and what they can get wrongWhy practice ownership is one path to wealth, but not the only oneHow real estate can create generational wealth for dentistsWhy scaling requires systems, not chaosThe danger of over-leveraged DSOs and private equity dealsWhy dentists need to understand EBITDA, exits, and multiple arbitrageHow mentorship can help doctors move past professional plateaus This conversation is for dentists who want more than a job. It is for doctors who want to think bigger, build smarter, and understand how clinical skill, business systems, and financial literacy all work together. 2. If Your Money Stops When You Stop, You Need a Better Plan

If Your Money Stops When You Stop, You Need a Better Plan

Let me ask you a question: what is the difference between being rich and being wealthy? A lot of people use those words like they mean the same thing. They do not. In this episode, I break that down the way I see it. You can make a very high income, look successful from the outside, and still not be wealthy. Why? Because if you have to keep showing up every day for the money to keep coming, then what you have is income, not wealth. As I say in this episode, if your money stops every time you stop, you need a better plan. I wanted to start this series here because too many dentists were taught the wrong story. We were taught to go to school, get a good education, get a good job, and work hard. But that old formula by itself does not create freedom. It creates dependence on labor. In this episode, I talk about why dentistry is one of the best professions in the world to build real wealth, not just because you can make a good living, but because you can leverage your degree, leverage systems, leverage assets, and build equity that grows in value over time. I also get into the difference between wages and profits, and why that matters so much. Profits are better than wages. Wages keep you tied to your own effort. Profits come from performing assets, from equity, from things that keep working even when you are not. That is the shift I want more dentists to make. I want you to stop thinking only like a producer and start thinking like an owner, a builder, and an entrepreneur. In this episode, I explain appreciation, leverage, and why people will buy a real business, but they do not want to buy your job. If everything in your practice depends on you personally, that is a risk. Real value gets built when you create systems, processes, and structure that can keep going without you. That is how you build something the market wants. That is how you build something your family can benefit from. That is how you move from just making money to actually building wealth. I say it all the time: the dental license is a license to print your own money. But you have to know how to build the systems. You have to know how to build value. That is what this conversation is about, and that is exactly why I want to invite you to May Day on May 1st in Las Vegas. We are going to spend a full day with dynamic speakers, digging into how to become an entrepreneur and really build wealth, not just get rich working hard. If this episode hits you where you live, then do not stop at listening. Come be in the room. Join me for May Day on May 1st and let’s go deeper into what it takes to build real wealth in dentistry. The Multi-Million Dollar Mindset: What Dental School Didn’t Teach You About Wealth

Most dentists are educated fools from an educated school. They are brilliant at clinical skills but remain trapped in a mindset of trading time for money. In this episode, Dr. Jerry Lanier introduces a 12-week countdown to his May Day event in Las Vegas on May 1, 2026. This program is designed to empower dentists to think beyond the chair and master the business of dentistry. Drawing from over 40 years of experience and his new book, Financial Allergy for Dentists, Dr. Amir breaks down a genius level business structure. This model allows dentists to own equity in the profits and growth of a practice without the liability of owning physical equipment. Key topics discussed in this episode: * The Tracking Unit (TU) Model: Learn how to leverage your degree to get equity in the business cash flow rather than just being a W-2 employee. * FAME and FARM: Explore two essential acronyms for wealth known as Forced Appreciation Multiples of EBITDA and Forced Appreciation Rent Multiples. * Controlling the Controllables: Discover why you must focus on revenues and expenses to drive your EBITDA. * Vetting Your Ideas with AI: Learn why you should run your business plans through Gemini or Claude instead of asking a CPA who isn’t a millionaire. * The Entrepreneur’s Reading List: Your first assignments are to read Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich and Robert Kiyosaki’s Cashflow Quadrant. Stop acting like an employee and start acting like an owner. If you want to reach an exit multiple of 8 to 14 times EBITDA, it is time to change your mindset. Why I Created the Pedo4GP Fellowship (And Why It Matters Now More Than Ever)

In this recent live episode of The Entrepreneur Dentist, I opened up about why I created the Pedo4GP Fellowship and University—and why it’s a game-changer for general dentists. For years, I saw a major gap: GPs were seeing pediatric patients but lacked the specific training and tools to treat them confidently and effectively. Meanwhile, pediatric specialists were in short supply—especially in underserved areas. So I did something about it. I built Pedo4GP to give general dentists the confidence, clinical skills, and systems they need to deliver exceptional care to children—without the years and cost of a traditional residency. In this episode, I break down: * The 7 foundational pillars every GP needs to master in pediatric dentistry * Why behavior management is the #1 challenge in treating kids—and how we train for it * What makes the 12-month Pedo4GP Fellowship different from any CE you’ve seen * The role of mentorship, structured curriculum, and experience in leveling up your skills * Why financial and business education matters just as much as clinical training * How to build performing assets and understand concepts like triple-net leases, SBLOCs, and long-term wealth strategy * The mindset shift from making money to building legacy This isn’t just a course. It’s a movement. If you’re ready to expand your scope, serve more families, and grow your income without adding stress—this is for you. Whether you’re early in your career or planning your exit strategy, this episode will give you real-world insight into the systems, mindset, and mentorship that have helped me—and hundreds of others—grow with purpose. 🎓 Learn more or apply to join the fellowship at Pedo4GP.com📧 Have questions?
