    87: 1834 Timeline Twist & The Mysterious Death of a Famous Botanist

    On today’s episode, Valerie’s Timeline Twist features a number of awful major events from 1834, a smattering of inventions, the burning of the Palace of Westminster in art, a discriminatory popular ballad (Boo!), a surprising medicinal condiment, and a strongly worded letter by none other than Davy Crockett. Next, Amy Jo shares the story of the mysterious unsolved death of a famous Scottish-born botanist whose passion for horticulture put him in danger in a number of ways (Um, sir, your eye is bleeding!). His obsessive search for new plant species led him to the beautiful islands of Hawaii in 1834, but his expedition ended suddenly in the bottom of a bullock pit.     86: The Bizarre Scandal: The 1700s Trial of the Century & the 1793 Zodiac Back

    85: 1793 Timeline Twist & the Great American Plague

    On today’s episode, Valerie’s Timeline Twist features a smattering of 1793 major events, the awful (unintended?) ramifications of Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, Dominique Jean Larrey’s “Flying Ambulances”, the short-lived and totally unflattering Belly Pad Craze, and a butter-heavy “Pan-Cake” recipe from the Knight Family Cookbook. Next, Amy Jo covers the panic, and devastation of the yellow fever epidemic that devastated Philadelphia in the second half of 1793. In a time when the miasma theory reigned, origin theories were shaky and therefore treatments were, shall we say, creative? Citizens (and some doctors) fled the city, while city  leaders leaned on the Freed African Society with unfortunate results. There were heroes, but few were exempt from the sad chaos.     84: The Murder in Room 1046 & the 1935 Zodiac Back

    On today’s episode, Valerie shares the story of the mysterious unsolved murder of a young man who checked into a Kansas City hotel early in 1935, and the bizarre details of his stay, his murder, the crime scene, and the disturbing investigation that followed. The letters and phone calls received in the aftermath of the crime only served to deepen the mystery.     83: 1935 Timeline Twist & The Bremen Six

    On today’s episode, Valerie covers a triple violation of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, feeling the need for speed, new releases like Monopoly, Nylons, and the Wonderbra, top 1935 films, music, and amazing art depicting everyday themes of celebration and struggle, and a Great Gatsby style party during the tough times of the Great Depression in the 1935 Timeline Twist. Next, Amy Jo shares a story about an anti-fascist plot to steal and destroy a prominent flag from a lavish party aboard the German-built ocean liner, the SS Bremen. After an exceedingly brief planning sesh at a local cafe, the Bremen Six boarded the ship, but things did not go as planned.     82: The First Train Robbery in the West & the 1870 Zodiac Back

    On today’s episode, Valerie tells the quintessential 1800s story of seven bandits who attempted the first train robbery in the West. The heist went like clockwork aboard the Central Pacific Overland Express Train, Engine No. 1, but things fell apart quickly afterward thanks to a lone crack investigator and the less than stellar fortitude of a few of the would-be criminals.     81: 1870 Timeline Twist & The Murder of A.P. Crittenden

    On today’s episode, Valerie presents a bit of history, including some firsts for African Americans in the USA, balloon mail, “Bourbon’s First Bottler”, an early solution to tinned food, the “Early Bustle Era” (can you say TRIM?), and a massive beer and BBQ party in Syracuse, NY, in the 1870 Timeline Twist. Next, Amy Jo covers the excessively familiar story of a jilted lover turned murderess, but with a dash of extra-dramatic flair. It’s a story involving a gentleman with two first initials (hello 1800s), a ferry (Boat Watch!), a long black veil, a wild west silver mining town, first wave feminism in Gilded Age San Francisco, and not one, but two trials with groundbreaking outcomes.
