Why Everyone Feels Socially Rusty Now

If talking to people feels harder than it used to, you may not suddenly be “bad with people.” You may simply be out of practice. We’re spending less time with friends, having fewer face-to-face conversations, interacting less during the workday, and replacing thousands of tiny social interactions with apps, delivery, self-checkout, texting, and screens. In this episode, I break down why so many of us feel socially rusty, what disappearing everyday interactions have done to our social confidence, and why waiting until you “feel confident” before becoming more social gets the process backwards.Because social confidence works a lot like physical conditioning: the confidence comes after the reps.In this episode:• Why ordinary social interactions used to keep our people skills sharp• What happened to our everyday “social reps”• Why texting and digital communication aren't the same practice as real-time conversation• How remote and hybrid work changed one of our biggest sources of social interaction• Why discomfort does not mean you're socially awkward• The tiny social reps that can help you feel comfortable talking to people again00:00 Why Everyone Feels Awkward00:58 My Coworking Wake-Up Call02:05 We Spend Less Time With Friends03:12 We Speak Fewer Words Now05:01 Lost Everyday Social Reps06:50 Remote Work Removed Practice09:01 Why We Need People Less for Fun11:34 Social Skills Build Confidence13:29 Tiny Reps to Start Today14:45 Final Push and Next VideoI speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work.If your team or audience needs a more honest, practical conversation about connection, learn more or inquire here:https://www.cassthompson.com/speakerOr email me at Cass@cassthompson.comWant to reach out but not sure what to say? You’ve Optimized Your Life So Much You’re Missing It

We have gotten very good at optimizing our lives. We track our sleep, our steps, our food, our schedules, our productivity, our routines—and then sometimes get annoyed when another human being interrupts the perfectly optimized plan. But what exactly are we optimizing all of this for? In this episode, I’m talking about the point where efficiency stops helping us live better and starts getting in the way of actually living. From the lunch with a friend I almost wished I hadn’t scheduled, to rigid routines, endless tracking, last-minute invitations and the rare opportunities we’re too quick to turn down. Data can create awareness. Routines can make life easier. Boundaries matter. But none of them are supposed to become the point of your life. Sometimes the better choice is to miss the workout, mess up the Sunday reset, take the long lunch or stop for the conversation you didn’t plan for. Put people back into the empty spaces. Live. Don’t optimize. I speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work. How to Stop Boring People

Some of us are boring people to tears. The problem is not always what we’re talking about. It is how much unnecessary context, backstory and play-by-play we make someone process before reaching the interesting part. We now have endless opportunities to go deep into our interests. We can listen to hours of podcasts, join niche communities and follow people who already understand every reference. Then we enter an everyday conversation and forget that the person in front of us has not consumed the same information—or may not care about it nearly as much as we do. In this episode: • The three ways we lose people while telling stories• Why irrelevant background makes conversations harder to follow• How to tell whether a detail actually belongs• Why one polite question is not a request for the full director’s commentary• How to answer a question before providing the backstory• The “headline, relevant detail, pause” method• How to let the other person determine whether they want the short version or the extended edition Being more interesting in conversation often requires more editing and less detail. Give people enough context to enter the story, then let them ask for more. How to Talk to Someone When You Have Nothing in Common

Have you ever been talking to someone and thought, “I have absolutely nothing in common with this person”? You do not follow the same sports. You have different hobbies. You have covered the weather and the weekend, and now it feels like the conversation has nowhere to go. You do not need more matching interests. You need a different goal. Instead of trying to find something you both like, get curious about why the other person likes what they like. The subject is only a doorway. Sports can lead to family traditions. Woodworking can lead to a grandfather, a first project, or the family dinners someone hopes to host around a new table. This conversation covers: - How to use who, what, when, where, why, and how when your mind goes blank. - How to hear the detail that can open another story. - Why one follow-up question should usually come before your own related story. - How to offer enough about yourself that the conversation does not feel like an interview. - Why the deepest common ground is often the experience underneath the interest: commitment, competition, community, excitement, or learning something difficult. The goal is not to fake an interest in every hobby. Become interested in the person. **Watch next:** How to Make Small Talk So Easy, People Instantly Like You → https://youtu.be/DFZX0Ty1eOQ **Resources mentioned:** - Vanessa Van Edwards, Science of People, “How to Be a Connector”: https://www.scienceofpeople.com/how-to-be-a-connector/ - Alison Wood Brooks and Michael Yeomans, “Boomerasking: Answering Your Own Questions”: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39786839/ **Free resource:** Get the “But What Do I Say?!?” Connection Messages Guidebook: https://www.cassthompson.com/connection

Your Life Is Customized—People Shouldn't Be | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #3

We customize almost everything in our lives now—our schedules, entertainment, coffee orders, social feeds, shopping, even the people and interests the algorithms put in front of us.But I think all that customization is changing what we expect from relationships, too. We’re getting increasingly used to people who match our interests, values, life stage, communication style and schedule. And when someone doesn’t? It has become very easy to decide they’re simply “not my kind of person.”I call this the Chipotle Effect: getting exactly what we want in so many areas of life is shrinking our tolerance for the parts of human relationships we didn’t personally select. In this episode, I’m talking about why customized schedules make connection harder, how social media and niche communities affect who we interact with, why compatibility and connection are not the same thing, and one simple way to become more curious about people who aren’t exactly like you. This is Part 3 of Why Being Alone Feels Easier Now—and Why That’s a Problem, my three-part series on Convenience, Customization and Comfort.▶️ WATCH NEXT: Comfort Is Shrinking Your Social Life | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #2https://youtu.be/e_IljnosUos▶️ WATCH THE FULL SERIES: Why Being Alone Feels Easier Now—and Why That’s a Problemhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPR9OKla3Re8I speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work.If your team or audience needs a more honest, practical conversation about connection, learn more or inquire here:https://www.cassthompson.com/speakerOr email me at Cass@cassthompson.comWant to reach out but not sure what to say? How Comfort Is Making Connection Harder | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #2

Life has become incredibly comfortable. We have heated seats, Lightning Lane, towel warmers, temperature-controlled mugs, hotel-room gadgets, and a phone ready to rescue us from thirty seconds of boredom. That comfort feels good. It has also made the ordinary discomfort of dealing with people feel much bigger than it is.Meeting someone is nerve-wracking. Walking into an event alone is nerve-wracking. Calling instead of texting, inviting someone who might say no, driving across town to see a friend, or sitting through an awkward pause all require a little discomfort. You do not get socially confident and then start talking to people. You start talking to people, and that is how you become socially confident. This episode looks at why comfort is a terrible predictor of what will actually make us feel good, what the commuter study discovered when people talked to strangers, and how to rebuild your social confidence through a 10% discomfort challenge.**WATCH NEXT:** I Also Live Alone. Life Got More Convenient. So Why Are We Lonelier? | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #1

Life has never been more convenient—but that convenience has quietly removed people from ordinary life. You can mobile-order coffee, get your Target order placed in your trunk, have groceries left at your door, DoorDash dinner, and go through an entire Saturday without really talking to anyone. Each tool saves time. But together, they’ve removed many of the casual interactions that used to help us feel connected to the world around us.In Part 1 of Why Being Alone Feels Easier, I’m looking at what convenience erased, why connection now feels like another task we have to schedule, how people themselves began to feel inconvenient, and one small way to start putting people back into the equation.WATCH NEXT:▶ The Health Advice No One Ever Told You: Social Healthhttps://youtu.be/0Qc_iLrgQ8A▶ I Also Live Alone. We track our sleep, protein, workouts, supplements, even our VO2 max. And over the last 20 years, we’ve gotten much better at talking about our mental health too.But there is a third part of our health most of us aren’t thinking about nearly enough: **social health.**So many of the interactions that used to happen naturally have disappeared from our lives. We can work, order food, exercise, shop and entertain ourselves without speaking to anyone. We thought about what we were gaining, but we didn’t think nearly enough about what we were losing. This is about why connection isn’t just nice to have, how to look at your own social health through **structure, function and quality**, and where to start if one of those areas needs attention. And no, this does not mean you need to become an extrovert, find 50 friends or suddenly have plans five nights a week.It does mean people probably need to move a little higher on the priority list.**WATCH NEXT:** 10 BEST Places to Meet NEW People In 2024 → [VIDEO LINK]**ALSO MENTIONED:** The self-care advice that can quietly make loneliness worse →https://youtu.be/jiEFbteup9E What the viral loneliness videos are missing → https://youtu.be/mtgMXbbf8kQ Over the next three episodes, I’m also looking at three things making connection harder in modern life: convenience, customization and comfort.00:00 The Missing Piece of the Health Puzzle02:27 What Is Social Health?03:10 How Connection Stopped Happening15:35 The Framework: Structure, Function, Quality19:39 Where to Start**SOURCES & RESEARCH:**- U.S. Surgeon General, *Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation* — social connection framework and health evidence: https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf- Sommerlad et al., *Association of social contact with dementia and cognition: 28-year follow-up of the Whitehall II cohort study*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31374073/- Cohen et al., *Does Hugging Provide Stress-Buffering Social Support?*: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0956797614559284- Smith et al., *The association between loneliness, social isolation and inflammation*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32092313/- Berkman and Syme, *Social networks, host resistance, and mortality*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/425958/- Sandstrom and Dunn, *Social Interactions and Well-Being: The Surprising Power of Weak Ties*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24769739/Want to reach out but not sure what to say?
