    118. Adding Inclusion Shouldn't Be The Goal

    You can add diverse imagery to your website, publish an inclusion statement, offer scholarships and welcome people from all racial backgrounds into your business.  But when a racially harmful incident occurs, what do you do?  In this episode, I examine the difference between communicating inclusive values and having the knowledge and capacity to lead a racially inclusive space. Through the scenario of a racial slur being used during a live group coaching call, we consider what the leader’s response communicates to the person harmed, the wider community and everyone watching to see whether the business’s stated values will hold. I also apply the CARE Leadership lens of Compassion, Accountability, Relationship and Equity to the decisions a leader must make when racial harm occurs. This conversation is an invitation to consider whether you are prepared to recognise harm, respond with integrity and remain accountable for what happens next.     117. Why People Don’t Tell You They Feel Unsafe

    What does it really mean when nobody in your program, community or service has ever told you they felt unsafe? It could mean everyone had a positive experience. It could also mean the people who felt uncomfortable decided that saying something carried more risk than staying silent. Speaking honestly is rarely a neutral act when one person holds greater access, influence or authority. Long before someone raises a concern, they are paying attention to how disagreement is received, whose experiences are taken seriously and what happens to people who challenge the status quo. In this episode, I examine the conditions that can make honesty difficult, even inside businesses led by thoughtful, well-intentioned people. I also reflect on Adam Goodes’ experience of calling out racism in the AFL and consider how the response may have differed if Compassion, Accountability, Relationship and Equity had shaped the leadership surrounding him. This conversation may challenge what you have assumed about safety, silence and the culture people experience inside your business.     116. Introducing CARE Leadership: Four Practices For Creating A Culture Of Care

    You may care deeply about your clients, customers and community, but how do you know whether that care is being experienced by the people inside your business? A culture of care cannot depend entirely on how caring we believe ourselves to be. It is shaped by what people repeatedly experience through our leadership, particularly when they need support, offer feedback, make a mistake, experience harm or have needs we did not anticipate. In this episode, I introduce the four practices of CARE Leadership: Compassion, Accountability, Relationship and Equity. We consider how compassion moves care towards action, why accountability requires us to examine the impact of our leadership, how relationships keep us connected to the people behind the enrolments and what role equity plays when it comes to identity, access and power. You will also have an opportunity to reflect on where these practices may already be present in your online business, where they may be disconnected and what could be strengthened.     115. The Public Persecution of Jason Arday: Proximity to Power & Anti-Blackness

    Professor Jason Arday was once celebrated as the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge. However, within weeks allegations of plagiarism expanded into extraordinary scrutiny of his career, achievements, personal history, autism and whether he belonged in one of Britain’s most prestigious institutions at all. His death at just 41 has left behind questions that reach far beyond one academic or one controversy. What does Jason Arday’s story tell us about anti-Blackness, Black hypervisibility and the pressure placed on Black people who enter spaces close to power? Why can the alleged mistake of one Black person so quickly become evidence in a wider argument against diversity, equity and inclusion? And how much room are Black people actually given to be imperfectly human? This episode explores race, power, disability, the current anti-DEI climate and the difference between legitimate accountability and public persecution.     114. The Difference Between Caring & Creating Care In Your Online Business

    People are tired. Mentally...from making constant decisions, running businesses, caring for families and trying to keep up with a world that rarely slows down. In this episode, I’m looking at the difference between caring about people and creating spaces where people can actually experience that care. The work of Carol Gilligan, Joan Tronto and Patricia Hill Collins helps us see care as far more than niceness, showing how attentiveness, responsibility, listening, accountability and equity can shape the conditions people experience inside the spaces we lead. At a time when so many women are already bearing a heavy mental load, care cannot become one more expectation piled on top. But when it is thoughtfully built into the way we lead, care can become part of the culture itself. It can influence how people participate, contribute, give feedback and experience belonging. This is such a timely conversation for the moment we are living in and this episode is a must listen for heart-led business owners who want their clients to feel seen in a way they haven't before.     113. Is Your Business Really As Inclusive As You Think? Lessons From Japan

    After spending two weeks travelling through Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka, I've returned home thinking about the small moments that made me feel genuinely welcomed, considered and valued. From Japanese hospitality and omotenashi to language, cultural pride and the care built into everyday experiences, Japan gave me a different lens through which to think about belonging and racial inclusion. For online business owners, coaches, course creators and those running memberships, this episode raises questions about the spaces we’ve created and more specifically, how other people experience them. It will have you questioning whether your business is really as inclusive as you think it is and whether the people entering your coaching program, course or membership can genuinely belong without having to adapt themselves to fit the culture you’ve already created.     After more than 100 episodes of REPRESENTED Podcast, I’m taking a pause for the month of July. This short episode is a note from me before I step away for the Australian school holidays. I’m sharing why care, rest and resisting false urgency are part of sustainable racial equity work, especially when you are building a business, holding family responsibilities, navigating your own capacity and still wanting to stay connected to the work of inclusion.     112. Raising Anti-Racist Kids In An AI World

    When one of my clients told me how her children's school had marked Reconciliation Week here in Australia, it planted the seed for this episode. The school could have easily chosen the convenient and easy path of acknowledging and recognising the week but instead they chose to build relationship. This got me thinking about who is really shaping the way our children come to understand race, history, difference and belonging.  This episode is about raising anti-racist kids in a world where 79% of Australian children aged 10 to 17 years old have already used AI, where the homework helper can slowly begin to feel like a friend and where the first answer a machine offers can look like the whole truth. I bring in the work of Howard Stevenson, Abeba Birhane, Joy Buolamwini and Deborah Raji as well as Palawa scholar Maggie Walter, to explore why teaching our children to be kind to everyone falls short on it's own. I also share the questions I ask my own daughter at the kitchen table, the ones that help a child notice whose story is missing from the answer in front of them, because raising racially aware children in an AI world begins, the way it always has, with the kind of adults we are willing to become.
