RBCN BASKETBALL NEXUS STATE OF THE GAME E22: COACH NICK CRANDELL, BASALT HS, CO: Coach Nick Crandell – Bio Nick Crandell is the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Basalt High School, bringing over a decade of coaching experience and a track record of building winning programs in rural Colorado communities. Crandell began his coaching career in 2013, working with youth players, laying the foundation for his development-focused approach. In 2019, he transitioned into middle school basketball while continuing to invest in youth development through 2021. His ability to connect with players and build fundamentals led to an opportunity at the high school level, where he joined Grand Valley High School as the Boys JV coach. In 2022, Crandell was promoted to Head Coach at Grand Valley, where he took over a program that had been below .500 since 2018. Over the next few seasons, he transformed the program into a competitive, respected program, culminating in a winning season in 2025. During his tenure, Grand Valley finished as league runner-up, made a trip to the state regionals, and saw two players advance to the collegiate level. His teams also produced six All-League selections, eight Honorable Mention All-League players, and more than 20 CHSAA Academic All-State athletes—an accomplishment that stands out in a rural athletic landscape. In 2025, Crandell was hired as the Head Coach at Basalt High School, where he continues to build a culture centered on development, accountability, and team-first success. As a player, Crandell competed at Rifle High School, earning All-Conference and All-State Honorable Mention honors. He went on to serve in the United States Navy, where he played on the All-Navy Basketball Team.
