    When You Love So Deep, You Mourn Change

    Your Life Needs More Side Quests

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) Who decided there was only one way to do life? We start this episode with a conversation about having kids—and the difference between choosing to become a parent and simply doing it because it feels like the next box society expects you to check. Marriage and kids can absolutely be wins, but so can traveling, trying something new, building relationships, learning something you’re terrible at or simply waking up and appreciating the people you still have around you. Which leads us to the idea that maybe our lives need more “side quests.” Explore somewhere in your own city you’ve never been. Walk into a random bookstore. Watch a sunset without taking a picture. Call somebody you haven’t talked to in months. Compliment a stranger. Say yes to something you’d normally turn down. Sometimes the little experiences we treat as insignificant end up being the stuff that makes life interesting. Of course, we take plenty of our own side quests during this episode—including the shows we’re watching, what movies are appropriate to watch with your kids, angel numbers, a 24-year-old Chihuahua, the world’s oldest people, a guy dressed as the Grim Reaper staring down at hospital patients, and Frankie’s confession about something he used to do to unsuspecting airline passengers while working at Detroit Metro Airport.     The Stories Hiding in Plain Sight: Erik Nilsson of Small Lake City

This week we catch up with Erik Nilsson, creator and host of Small Lake City, more than three years after we first appeared on his podcast. A lot has changed since then. Erik has grown Small Lake City from a podcast built around his curiosity about the people shaping Salt Lake into a local media platform with a huge social following—and he’s getting closer to making the leap into doing it full-time. We talk about what actually helped him grow online, finding your niche, dealing with critics and comment-section craziness, and why sometimes the best response to a hater is no response at all.     Joy and Pain Can Live in the Same House

She shares what move-in day was really like—from the strange anticipation that morning and watching Coop light up around his new friends, to realizing it was time for her and Kev to leave. They’re incredibly proud and excited for him, but they’re also learning that joy and sadness can exist at exactly the same time. Jess talks about the quiet house, crying herself to sleep, resisting the urge to immediately change everything, and learning to sit with the discomfort while she and Kev figure out what this next chapter of their marriage and family looks like.     Your Self-Worth Isn’t Your Productivity… Also, There’s a Fart Blaster

That sends us down a rabbit hole about protein, late-night snacking, sleep schedules and what happens when you finally start paying attention to what your body is telling you. Jess and Kev are about to become empty nesters, which means their midnight-to-8 sleep schedule may finally change, while Frankie shares the simple mental trick that’s helped him fall asleep faster than he has in years. But the bigger conversation is about something both Frankie and Jess have had to learn the hard way: your self-worth is not determined by how productive you are. There’s a difference between working hard and using work to avoid yourself. Sometimes taking a day off, sitting in the backyard or admitting that you’re emotionally exhausted isn’t laziness—it’s recognizing what you actually need.     Signs, Second Chances & You Just Never Know

Jess is days away from Coop leaving for college and opens up about the strange push-and-pull of being incredibly excited for your kid while grieving the end of a chapter that’s lasted nearly two decades. Frankie shares an update on his mom — the progress she’s making in rehab, the difficult days that still come with it, and why he’s learning that loving someone doesn’t always mean pushing them to fight harder. Sometimes it means accepting that their journey belongs to them. Then things take a turn. Frankie remembers exactly where he was on August 16, 1987, when Northwest Airlines Flight 255 crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit — and the strange thing he and his friends experienced just miles from the crash site before they knew what had happened. He also shares the hummingbird encounter he recently had on a hike and some incredible listener stories about hummingbirds and dragonflies appearing after the loss of loved ones. Are they simply beautiful encounters with nature…or could there be something more?     Letting Go Without Giving Up

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) This week’s catch-up gets real about something we’re both learning in very different ways: sometimes loving someone means loosening your grip. Jess is days away from Coop moving into his college dorm, and the emotions are hitting hard. She’s incredibly excited for him — but after nearly 20 years of it being the three of them, she’s also learning that you can be happy for your kid and heartbroken about the change at the exact same time. Frankie gives an update on his mom as she continues rehab. She’s getting stronger physically, but there are still concerning moments with her memory and plenty of ups and downs. And Frankie talks about a shift that’s happening in him — realizing he can encourage his mom to fight, eat, walk and get stronger, but ultimately, she has to want it. He’s learning to let go of control without letting go of hope. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Frankie & Jess catch-up without some ridiculousness mixed in. We get into expired car tags, why everyone suddenly becomes suspicious the second a cop gets behind them, the insanity of parking in Salt Lake, old-school TV and Beta tapes, weddings, Nobody Wants This, and a very questionable furniture store that Frankie actually bought a couch from in the ’90s. Life is changing for both of us right now.
