Every Garment Has a Story ~ Inside the Kenyan Fashion Story 2026

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Season 2, Episode 9 of Made in Africa Podcasts is ready, and it is a conversation full of vibration, honesty, and vision. We sit down with Ms. Ingred Awuor, founder of The Kenyan Fashion Story, and ask the questions every creative wants answered. What made you say Kenya needs a platform that tells designers’ stories? As a creator and storyteller, she saw a gap. Many stages let designers show clothes, but few let them speak. Her platform is different: designers share the inspiration, motivation, and challenges behind their collections. Here, they also meet buyers face to face, and buyers can purchase before, during, or after the event. We ask about the future, too. What will it take for Kenyans to choose local over imported? Ingred believes that Made in Kenya fashion, often expensive today, can become more accessible when designers collaborate and share a workshop or a shop, so both can grow financially. She also calls for clear rules and regulations to protect originality, so no designer copies another. And the big one: What does “The Next Chapter” mean to you, and how can a new designer or model become part of the story? The Kenyan Fashion Story 2026 takes place in the heart of Nairobi, at Karen Village. 🎧 Enjoy the full episode on your favorite podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, and many others. From Waste to Runway: The Fashion With an Impact That Brings Children Home

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Hello everyone, and welcome to Made in Africa Podcasts, the show that brings you true and original stories from across the continent. This is Season 2, Episode 8. I'm your host Celestin Ntawirema, and today's guest is a woman who traded the bright lights of television for a life of purpose in Kenya. Nur M'nasria spent eighteen years producing television across the Arab world, including six seasons of Khawatir on MBC. Then, in 2015, she walked into a Nairobi slum to film a single episode, and never really left. Today, Nur is the founder of MAISHA By Nisria, a fashion brand that turns textile waste into beautiful, wearable design. Maisha means "life" in Swahili, and that is exactly what this brand gives back: life to discarded fabric, and a second chance to the people who work with it. In Gilgil, Nur trains women in upcycled design. More than sixty graduates have come through the programme, and over six hundred garments have been created from waste. Some of these pieces have reached international runways and global publications. But this story goes far beyond fashion. Through Kwetu Haven, Nur has helped rescue more than ninety children since 2023, with a ninety-nine percent family reunification rate. For her, the goal is never to keep a child. It is to bring a child home. She started volunteering at just fifteen. Twenty-six years later, her work has reached more than fifty thousand people across six countries. In this conversation, we walk through her journey and the moment everything changed. We look at the daily reality of rescue work, the life of a single garment from waste to runway, and what Africa's role is in the global textile waste crisis. And we ask what dignity truly means, for the women, for the children, and for the garments themselves. This is a story about fashion with purpose and impact that is real. It is Nur's story, and the story of the women and children whose lives it has changed. Let's get into it. Our guest is Tatiana Teixeira, the visionary founder of AfroWema — a brand that bridges science, marketing, and a deep passion for sustainability to empower communities through fashion. With a background in biology and marketing, Tatiana's journey began in 2018 when she volunteered in Kibera, Nairobi's largest informal settlement. By 2023, AfroWema was born — a brand dedicated to blending African heritage with eco-conscious fashion through upcycled denim, handwoven fabrics, and traditional textiles like Kitenge. AfroWema is more than a brand; it is a movement. Tatiana champions young designers, artisans, and creatives while partnering with organisations and schools to advance sustainable fashion education across Kenya and Africa.
