#130 - How (and why) you should never give up with Jordan Stevenson

Imagine taking a bullet to the head, and living to tell the tale. When I first met, Jordan Stevenson, it was through a mutual friend (actually it was Glenn Lovelace, another guest from the show). Jordan had just had an accident while snowboarding and Glenn called us in to see if we could help out around the house. When I shook Jordans hand, my jaw hit the floor. Remember, Jordan had already taken a bullet to the head. Now he was nursing a cracked rib from a snowboarding crash. When I looked down, I saw that Jordan also was missing one of his legs. While on deployment, Jordan took an AK-47 round through his helmet, through his head, and out the back.I knew the moment I met Jordan that you needed to meet him too. He possesses an unconquerable spirit walking around in a body that had every reason to quit a long time ago.In this conversation, Jordan walks us through all of it. The sandlot-style childhood where he and the neighborhood boys played a game they just called War. The patriotism that pulled him into the Navy after 9/11. Three runs at SEAL training and three brutal interruptions — pneumonia, a ruptured appendix, a knee that finally said no. The pivot into EOD. The night on the wall in Afghanistan, and the round that should have ended him. And the medic, who was told to pack the wound and call Jordan a loss — and refused. "I'm not going to lose Jordan. I'm going to save Jordan's life."That is the through-line of this whole episode. Brotherhood. The kind that's forged in dirt and fire; the kind that doesn't dissolve when the uniforms come off; the kind we all need and most of us don't know how to build.Jordan didn't want to talk about any of this for a long time. The book was scary to write. Being seen was scarier. Eventually, he started speaking. He started writing. He started looking for every brother he could find — every man and every woman quietly deciding they're done — so they could see what often, we never get to see: that the barrier in front of you is the final step before the greatest thing you've ever done.If someone's name just came to your heart while you were reading this, send this episode to them. They might be praying for exactly the kind of brotherhood Jordan is about to describe. And if YOU don't have a band of brothers of your own — Jordan said it on the mic, and I'll say it again right here — message him. He will be it.Through this episode you will not only come to know Jordan Stevenson. You will come to know what it means to be unstoppable.📘 Connect with Jordan Stevenson ➡️ Website: https://headshotjordan.com/ ➡️ Buy His Book: https://amzn.to/4dRPG8j ➡️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/headshotjordan/0:00 Welcome — meeting the man who survived the unsurvivable13:38 Signing a SEAL contract straight out of high school28:21 Three runs at BUD/S — pneumonia, then a ruptured appendix34:59 The pivot — EOD, the Navy's best-kept secret41:55 Deploying to Afghanistan with the 75th Ranger Battalion49:13 On the wall — an AK-47 opens fire53:05 Robert Moreno, the medic who refused to lose him1:03:20 22 a day — the phone call about Steve Cooper1:04:14 Starting to speak. #128 - How do I cope with Grief and Loss with Grace? With Amanda Wilkinson

No one wants to become an expert on Grief.there's a kind of grief that rewrites you, and there's a kind of grace that meets you there.Amanda Wilkinson knows both.Amanda is the mother of Grace Wilkinson — Gracelyn — who, after an accident at school took six years of her life and eventually ended it, taught her family (and now the world) what it means to walk through the brutal and the beautiful at the same time.I met Amanda through her brother Ben Kjar (you might remember him from his episode on his film Standout), and the moment he introduced us, I knew I needed you to met her. She's brilliant; she's vulnerable; she's been put through what she calls an unsolicited PhD program in grief. And the gold she's carrying out of that experience is something we all need.Fair warning: we cried the whole way through this one. There wasn't a dry eye on set, and I don't expect there to be one for you either. Bring tissues.Amanda's book about Grace is on Amazon now, and I'll tell you straight — it's the kind of read that rearranges you. I finished it the day before we recorded, walked out into the living room, looked at my kids, and asked myself questions I hadn't thought to ask. Prayed prayers I didn't know I needed to pray.If a name came to mind while you were listening — a mother, a daughter, someone walking through loss, someone who needs to remember that goodness is still ahead — please send this to them.Grace is beloved. Grace matters. And the way you walk with grace through your own story is your legacy.Through this book you will not only come to know Grace Wilkinson, you will come to understand the Grace of God.📘 Connect with Amanda Wilkinson ➡️ Buy the Book: https://amzn.to/4no9ZP6 ➡️ More on Gracelyn Wilkinson: https://amandawilkinsonspeaks.com/gracelyn-wilkinson ➡️ Book Amanda to Speak: https://amandawilkinsonspeaks.com/speaking ➡️ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/amanda.k.wilkinson.3 ➡️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amandakjarwilkinson/00:00 Before we begin: a heads-up03:05 Meeting Amanda (and how Ben Kerr brought her to the show)04:10 An unsolicited PhD program in grief06:07 The conversations most parents never get to have09:14 When the doctors said we'd come to the end16:25 The list Grace made19:05 Recording an album from a hospital bed24:46 "Mom, when I move to heaven, can you still pray for me?"26:23 Angels, gather round: how Amanda prays now29:58 Hope is a relationship, not an outcome36:45 Transactional vs. transformational faith40:21 Why Grace gave away her flowers47:27 Becoming a death doula for her own daughter50:19 What Grace wants you to know54:18 An invitation to read her storyLet me know what part stuck out to you in the comments below:Want the Podcast Database I talked about? #127 - How to bridge the disagreement gap without losing the relationship with Tasha Wheelhouse

Here's what I want you to hear: we've forgotten how to disagree respectfully. We've been told for so long, "Don't talk about politics. Don't talk about religion." And now? We don't know how. We don't know how to sit across from someone we love, hear something we don't agree with, and stay in the room. That's exactly why I brought Tasha Wheelhouse on the show.Tasha was the award-winning speaker at our last Speak-Off, and she'll be the first to tell you she wasn't even planning to get on stage. She just went up to have fun. (Spoiler: that's the secret every speaker is missing. Listen for that part around the 5-minute mark.)Tasha and I don't see eye to eye on everything. And in this conversation, we go there. Religion. Politics. Sexuality. Cancel culture. The stuff we're all told to keep quiet about. But we model what it looks like to actually have the conversation with kindness, with curiosity (hint - that's the secret), and without anyone walking away wounded.Tasha is one of the most thoughtful humans I know. She's a phenomenal editor (I hire her for almost everything I need professionally polished), she runs a YouTube channel called Copper Shock where she breaks down horror films through a storytelling lens, and she has this rare gift of making people feel welcomed without ever compromising who she is.If someone's name came to mind while you were watching this, send it to them. They're praying for the kind of conversation you just witnessed.Your message matters. The way you have these conversations matters even more.📘 Connect with Tasha Wheelhouse ➡️ http://www.epictravelcrew.com ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/@coppershock00:00 Welcome and Why This Conversation02:17 Catching Up With Tasha02:55 The Speak-Off Win She Wasn't Planning05:00 The Secret to Speaking With Impact05:36 Fame as an Act of Service06:35 Does Your Business Actually Solve a Problem?08:01 The Cost of Fake-Authentic Content09:23 Horror Films as Modern Fables11:55 Naming the Monster (Tasha's Gym Floor Moment)14:21 The Fear of Looking Stupid on Stage15:43 When Defense Turns You Into the Monster18:43 Loving People Without Compromising Yourself21:11 Horror Films About Parenthood24:46 Watching Arcane With My Daughter27:21 Going There: Beliefs, Identity, and Hard Topics30:54 How to Respectfully Disagree With Someone You Love32:13 Believe What People Do, Not What They Say33:27 Setting the Standard in Your Own Space34:46 Reframing the Villain (Gaston and King Triton)37:10 Charlie Kirk and the Lost Art of Disagreement41:36 Why the Brain Is So Afraid of Being Wrong43:50 Cancel Culture and Permission to Change45:55 Posting Honestly When You're Not at Your "Best"47:51 Coming Off the Bell Curve of Fake Authenticity50:50 Why Politics Became Our Only Shared Story53:09 Fear vs. Danger (The Will Smith Quote)55:32 The Three Layers Behind "I Just Don't Want To"59:53 Why People Come to Tasha (The Rubber Duck Theory)1:02:08 A Creativity Exercise to Do With a Partner1:08:00 The IMDb Elevator Pitch Trick1:13:34 The Adventure Crew & World Building Summit1:16:11 Where to Find Tasha1:16:59 Final ThoughtsDo you want a part two of this episode? #126 - How to Survive Bullying & Find Happiness with Jordan & Anneli Fielding

Not every one deals with something as life changing as a physical disability, but you know what everyone deals with on a daily basis? One word: kindness. Maybe you have a lot of experience with the kindness of other - maybe you don't have enough. Jordan and Anneli Fielding are tow people who know what it's like to raise their kids while fending off unkindness, while at the same time dishing out love. As parents of their amazing son, Colton (who was born with Crouzon Syndrome and plays young Ben in the film "Standout" a movie about the life experience of Ben Kjar) the Fieldings know what it's like to be seen differently almost daily, and they leverage it for good. Together with Marianne they discuss what is was like learning early that Colton was born with fused skull sutures, the emotional toll of early uncertainty, and navigating support groups and life changing medical decisions. The Fieldings describe how faith helped them relinquish control while still doing their part. They share experiences with bullying and curiosity at school, strategies like educating classmates, and differing approaches to confrontation. They credit Ben, the movie, and a strong “band of brothers” support network for building Colton’s confidence, and encourage viewers to see or stream Standout for its broader message of kindness and resilience.Go see the movie: https://standoutfilm.com/00:00 Welcome and Guests00:48 Parenting Worries01:51 Why This Episode02:51 Questions From Family04:30 Lessons From Hard Things06:23 Crouzon Diagnosis10:24 Early Emotions and Support11:09 Surgeries and Uncertainty15:13 Letting Go of Control15:49 Insurance and Canceled Surgery23:42 LeFort Surgery Scare26:58 Firefighter Dad Perspective29:33 Band of Brothers32:03 School and Bullying35:58 Teaching Kids Compassion37:25 Standing Up at Soccer41:40 Kindness Versus Confrontation44:14 Curiosity Builds Bridges48:12 Finding Hope in Ben50:54 Protecting Colton on Set54:32 How Ben Found Colton01:02:02 Kindness Over Awareness01:05:53 Bully Proof Confidence01:08:02 Support System Matters01:10:22 Final Movie Takeaways📘 See the Movie - Standout ➡️ Website: https://standoutfilm.com/Do you want a part two of this episode?
