    22 - Dred Scott and Lincoln's Election

    In 1857, the Supreme Court handed down a ruling in Dred Scott v Sandford that essentially mandated that slavery be allowed everywhere in the United States. Abraham Lincoln rode the resulting backlash all the way to the White House.
