Dear Sophie: Letters on Grief

Sophie's mum got sick a few years back. After lots of treatment, lots of praying, lots of hoping, she died last year. Sophie wrote to her friend, Malcolm, trying to process what had happened. Over the next few months, Malcolm wrote a series of letters in response to Sophie, each unpacking an aspect of grief and faith. Each episode of this podcast explores an aspect of how to live as faithfully and authentically through our experiences of grief.

    Growing out of God

    Like us, our faith needs to grow and develop. If it doesn't, it can become restrictive and stifling. Often, we have a conception of faith that is fixed and concrete. Grief can ask some pretty unforgiving questions of us. Rather than doggedly hold to a particular way of seeing things, there may be more life in letting our grief break things down and then see what we can build out of the rubble.     What does it all mean?

    The question of meaning is never far from the human struggle with suffering. The conviction is that if we can simply find a meaningful interpretation of our pain, then our pain will be worthwhile. However, this can result in us living as if everything were 'meant to be.'     Ruth's Story

    In this episode, Malcolm tells the story of his friend Ruth, who after years of pretending, found a way to make room for who she really was and what she was really feeling, and found that it also made room for others to be similarly authentic.     Words for the Wrestle
