    Jean Gerson [1363-1429] Sermon on Christ Before Annas & Peter’s Denial 1363-1429

    What happens when truth stands calmly before power, and weakness collapses under pressure? In this sermon on Christ before Annas and Peter’s threefold denial, Jean Gerson contrasts the serene courage of Jesus with the impatience, self-justification, and fear that so often govern our own hearts. Yet the focus is not Peter’s failure but Christ’s mercy. Gerson shows how God permitted Peter’s fall to deepen his humility, teach the Church hope for forgiveness, and shape him into a shepherd capable of restoring others. At the heart of the sermon is a profound insight: true repentance begins when Christ “looks at us” inwardly.     “Be ye merciful”: Jean de Saint-Gilles’ Sermon from 1180 for a Hard-Hearted Age
