Welcome back to The Better Everyday Podcast where we are unlocking our best self one episode at a time! In this powerful episode, David and Grace share their raw, unfiltered experience running their very first marathon at the 2026 LA Marathon on March 8, 2026. David opens up about battling IT Band Syndrome (ITBS) starting December 27, 2025, and the uphill journey that followed—doctor visits, physical therapy, an MRI, and the hard truth that injuries often expose the weaknesses we’ve been avoiding. Despite trying to build mileage, he could only reach 4 pain-free miles leading into race day. Faced with multiple crossroads and every valid reason to quit, David made the decision to move forward after receiving medical clearance—knowing it would be painful, but possible. This became bigger than just a race. It became a mission to prove that even when life throws setbacks, you can still find a way to finish. As if the challenge wasn’t already enough, David also got sick just two days before the marathon and ran on little to no sleep. Race day became a test of mental, physical, and spiritual endurance. While he wasn’t able to enjoy the race the way he normally would, he stayed locked in on one goal: finish. He and Grace ran side by side for the first 15 miles—an incredible feat considering his limited training—before Grace continued strong and David pushed through by running and walking the rest of the way. Add in the unexpected heat, and it became a day filled with constant challenges, mental battles, and resilience. Grace shares her side of the journey—training consistently for weeks with a clear goal in mind. While she didn’t hit her exact target, she reflects on how proud she is of her performance, especially considering it was her first marathon and she’s been running for less than a year. She also highlights the incredible atmosphere of the race—the cheering crowds, strangers offering snacks and encouragement, the music, DJs, and the overwhelming support that made the experience unforgettable. Together, they reflect on one of the most meaningful parts of the day—seeing their kids at mile 18 and again at the finish line, made possible by Melody and Kevin. That moment became a source of deep motivation, reminding them why they started and who they’re doing it for. It reinforced their desire to lead by example and show their kids what perseverance truly looks like. This marathon was more than just a race—it was a lesson in identity, resilience, and what the human body and mind are truly capable of when pushed beyond limits.
