From Circular Value to Circular Economy: Rethinking Waste, Water and Urban Systems

Most of us hear “circular economy” and think recycling. In this episode, Rishabh, a sustainability and business excellence professional with 14 years of experience across oil and gas facility management, energy services, and district cooling, argues that the circular economy starts one step earlier: with understanding circular value. Drawing on research papers and real-world case studies, Rishab shows how value can move from one entity to another within a closed loop, and how what looks like waste to one party is a resource to another. He walks through three examples: China’s digital economy: how food delivery riders, while waiting for orders, boost the influence of online personalities, who in turn drive more demand back to restaurants and more jobs for the riders.Brussels coffee cafes: how used coffee grounds became a growing medium for oyster mushrooms, lowering mushroom prices and letting the cafes add new menu items and revenue.District cooling in an arid region: how treated wastewater, further purified through reverse osmosis, replaces precious potable water in cooling towers. The result is lower costs, less strain on desalinated water supplies, and support for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Nature, with its absence of landfills, is the model for all of it. The takeaway for young professionals and designers of products, processes, and systems is to ask not only what a resource is worth today, but what it can become tomorrow. Ideal for: students, early-career professionals, sustainability practitioners, and anyone curious about rethinking waste.
