    Dogfight In The Living Room (Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy, 1996–1998) [BONUS EPISODE]

    Originally a Patreon exclusive episode! In this episode, we dive into the entire Rebirth of Mothra trilogy: Rebirth of Mothra (1996), Rebirth of Mothra II (1997), and Rebirth of Mothra III (1998). We try to make sense of one of the strangest detours in the wider Toho kaiju universe. With Godzilla on hiatus after the end of the Heisei era, Toho handed the spotlight to Mothra and somehow made three kid-focused fantasy monster movies that feel part fairy tale, part Saturday morning fever dream, and part late-90s digital experiment gone sideways. We talk through the trilogy’s wildly different plots, the child-centered storytelling, the Elias triplets, Mothra Leo’s increasingly absurd power set, and the very specific kind of chaos that happens when Toho keeps saying “yes” to every idea. Across all three films, we get bizarre creature designs, weird little sidekick energy, awkward early CGI flying shots, miniature work that still has real charm, and a tone that swings from genuinely cool to absolutely unhinged in seconds. We get into why these movies blur together in places, why the third one feels like the most fully formed of the bunch, how the practical effects and suit work still give you plenty to latch onto, and why Caleb’s love for Mothra somehow makes even the messiest parts feel weirdly endearing.
