Heroes: The Grounding That Never Happened

Welcome to another episode of the Forward Podcast 🎙 This is part of our Heroes in Logistics series, where we step away from freight crime and courtroom dramas to look at the people who prevent disasters that never make the headlines. On a February afternoon in 2025, a fully loaded iron ore carrier lost propulsion while navigating one of the world's most critical export channels. For thirty-five minutes, a handful of harbour pilots, tug crews, engineers and traffic controllers worked against time, wind and tide to prevent a grounding that could have shut down Australia's largest bulk export port. This episode follows the story of the FMG Nicola incident in Port Hedland, and the logistics professionals whose decisions turned a potential maritime disaster into a forgotten afternoon. 🚢 Three key takeaways: 🛟 Major crises often start with very small failures. A faulty sensor triggered an automatic engine shutdown, leaving a 327-metre vessel carrying 240,000 tonnes of iron ore without propulsion in a narrow channel. ⚓ Experience matters, but teamwork matters more. Harbour pilots, engineers, tug operators and port control shared information quickly and acted decisively, allowing the vessel to regain control before reaching the channel's shallow edges. 🌏 The most important logistics successes are often invisible. The ship avoided damage, the port remained open, cargo continued moving, and most of the world never knew how close one afternoon came to disrupting a vital global trade route. When logistics works, nothing happens. Sometimes that is the most impressive achievement of all. 🎧 🚢

The Million-Euro Phone Call: When Verifying a Carrier Isn't Really Verification

Welcome to another episode of the Forward Podcast 🎙️ This time, we're looking at one of the fastest-growing threats in European road transport: phantom carrier fraud. It begins with what looks like a routine subcontracting request, complete with convincing documents, a professional phone call, and a truck arriving exactly as expected. But behind it is a criminal operation that has already done its homework 🚚. We unpack a 2024 German court decision where more than €1.3 million of cargo disappeared - and the insurer still required the freight forwarder to bear 30% of the loss because the verification process wasn't considered sufficient ⚖️. The judgment sends a clear message: for high-value cargo, simply trusting documents and making a phone call is no longer enough (OLG Düsseldorf (18 U 212/22). Three key takeaways: 🕵️ Phantom carrier fraud is highly organised. Criminals impersonate legitimate transport companies, clone genuine licences and registrations, and often know shipment details before they contact the forwarder - making the fraud extremely convincing. 📞 Calling the phone number in the email is not independent verification. The Düsseldorf Court made it clear that verifying a carrier using contact details supplied by the very party you're trying to verify is not meaningful due diligence. Independent checks matter. 🛡️ Insurance doesn't replace risk management. Even though the forwarder was a victim of sophisticated fraud, the court upheld the insurer's decision to reduce the claim payment because the forwarder had failed to meet the required standard of care for such a high-value shipment.
