Hamptons Community Outreach's Marit Molin combats inequality in her community

On Topic, Off Script host Brian Mastroianni chats with Marit Molin, a licensed clinical social worker and the founder of Hamptons Community Outreach. After she moved with her family to the Hamptons in 2015, Marit started to notice a gulf in experience between the affluent residents and visitors who flock to Long Island’s East End and those in the area facing poverty and housing insecurity. Many are year-round residents, service workers, laborers, and their families who help The Hamptons -- that picturesque coastal enclave -- function. In 2018, Marit started the Hamptons Art Camp, accessible summer programming for underserved children in the area. In the years since, it grew into an expansive organization that has raised $11M over the past 8 years, renovated 70 homes, installed 25 heating systems, built 6 new homes, and supported 200 families every week through food outreach. Marit touches on why this work is so vital, shares how others can give back, and discusses the power of community.  Hamptons Community Outreach: Website, Instagram Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers -- https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Dr. Kerry Burnight reframes how we view longevity and aging

On Topic, Off Script host Brian Mastroianni sits down with Dr. Kerry Burnight. She's a gerontologist , speaker, and author, known nationally as “The Gerontologist.” As the leading voice on making “older better," Dr. Burnight has served as a professor in geriatric medicine for 18 years at the University of California, Irvine, she co-founded the first Elder Abuse Forensic Center. Last year, she released her book Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life’s Second Half. She joins On Topic, Off Script to discuss ways to reframe conversations around aging and longevity and present findings from the CenterWell Fulfillment Index – a national measure designed to capture what older adults believe truly defines what it means to age well. Released earlier this year, it looks into what 6,600 older adults said marked health and well-being, pinpointing 12 specific life factors — think everything from financial security to spiritual gratitude — that shed light on how we can age with dignity. For Dr. Burnight, growing old with joy and leading a fulfilled life is about rejecting toxic positivity and looking at aging through a realistic, clear-eyed lens. She says true joy comes from within.  Dr. Kerry Burnight: Instagram, Joyspan CenterWell Fulfillment Index Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers -- https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Jess Rothschild talks documentary 'Finding Fire Island,' the LGBTQ+ history of The Pines

On Topic, Off Script host Brian Mastroianni sits down with Jess Rothschild to discuss Season 2 of her documentary series Finding Fire Island. For Pride Month, Brian welcomes back Jess Rothschild. They spoke last year about her docu-podcast Cult of Body & Soul, which explored the cultural phenomenon of SoulCycle. Now, she’s back with Season 2 of her GLAAD-nominated documentary series Finding Fire Island. It’s the first documentary of its kind to tell the history of Cherry Grove and The Fire Island Pines, the historic LGBTQ+ communities situated on Fire Island -- that thin barrier island just off the southern shore of Long Island. While the first season offered a look at Fire Island as a whole, in this second season -- co-produced with The Pines Historical Society -- Jess wades into the history, lore, and very vibrant present of the Fire Island Pines, interviewing everyone from Billy Porter and John Waters to Julio Torres, Jay Jurden and DJ Lina Bradford to the people whose ties to Fire Island stretch back to the early days of how this small slip of sand stood as an oasis for gay New York in the mid-20th century. It would go on to become a hub of activism, music, fun, and above all, a place of belonging for the greater LGBTQ+ community today. Tia Mowry rewrites the recipe on how to raise cancer awareness over the holiday dinner table, talks new Netflix film 'My Secret Santa'

In a special *bonus episode* of On Topic, Off Script, host Brian Mastroianni sits down with actor, producer, and cookbook author Tia Mowry. For millennial listeners out there, you know Tia as the '90s and 2000s fan favorite star of shows like classic family sitcom 'Sister Sister.' This holiday season, she is using her platform for an important cause -- Tia is joining Change the Odds, an American Cancer Society (ACS) initiative with sponsorship funding from Pfizer that hopes to bridge the gap in cancer care disparities. Through Change the Odds, Tia is hosting Rewrite the Recipe, a video series that addresses these cancer disparities in Black communities. It aims to inspire conversations about family cancer history around the dinner table this holiday season. The need for these conversations in Black households is great — Black people have the highest death rate for many cancers like breast and prostate. Black Americans have the lowest survival rates than their white peers for nearly every type of cancer, according to recent statistics. Brian and Tia discuss her suggestions for how to start these needed conversations during the holidays, her own experience with cancer screenings, and share what she’s been up to — from her holiday dinner table go-to recipes to her upcoming role in 'My Secret Santa,' which premieres this December on Netflix.  Tia Mowry: Instagram, Current Projects American Cancer Society: Change the Odds, Rewrite the Recipe Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers -- https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Health advocate spotlight: Heather Ward shares her asthma journey, what it was like to appear on 'American Idol'

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni sits down with Heather Ward to discuss her asthma advocacy and partnership with AstraZeneca. Based out of Fort Worth, Texas, Heather Ward is an application software builder for hospitals and is a proud mom of two. Heather joins On Topic, Off Script today, in partnership with AstraZeneca, to share her personal health journey with asthma. Born with a collapsed lung as a premature baby, Heather was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 5. This has been a thread that’s carried through her whole life. At age 11, she almost died from a flare-up, and over the years, she’s gone through trial and error with a number of medications and treatments. Things subsided until her second pregnancy, when her life was upended once again when her asthma reemerged. Earlier this year, she was prescribed Airsupra, a medication that has seen her experience a difference in her lungs right away. Research published this year in The New England Journal of Medicine showed that this medication significantly reduced the risk of a severe asthma attack by 47% compared to as-needed albuterol.  For the record, this podcast episode is neither influenced nor sponsored by a pharmaceutical company.  Brian sits down with Heather to learn more about her journey with asthma, how her passion for singing brought her to appear on American Idol (!), and what others can take away from her experiences.  The New England Journal of Medicine: Study, AstraZeneca press release Asthma resources: American Lung Association Asthma Resources Library, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Allergy & Asthma Network Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers -- https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Jess Rothschild gives her hot takes on SoulCycle with her new podcast 'Cult of Body & Soul'

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni sits down with Jess Rothschild to discuss her new docu-podcast series Cult of Body & Soul. Jess Rothschild produces and hosts pop culture podcast Hot Takes and Deep Dives. Since 2019, she’s interviewed the likes of Rosie O’Donnell, John Cameron Mitchell, Sandra Bernhard, and many more as she delves into all things queer pop iconography and New York City culture.  Now, she’s discussing Cult of Body & Soul, her new seven-part docu-podcast series that explores the cultural phenomenon of SoulCycle -- something that became much more than an indoor cycling workout. It hit the zeitgeist, attracting celebrities like Oprah Winfrey but also serving as a hub for community...and some controversy...over the years. Through the show, Jess interviews instructors, studio managers, front desk staff, and corporate insiders, while also weaving in her personal connection to SoulCycle and how it affected her own life. Brian sits down with Jess to hear what inspired her to do this deep dive on all things SoulCycle and what made something that -- on paper -- sounds like just an indoor spin class into the Cult of Body and Soul.
