Gilded Sins: The Rise & Fall of a New Orleans Madam

When Kate Townsend arrived in New Orleans in 1857, she was a young, poor, uneducated immigrant. Within just a few years, she opened one of the most luxurious brothels in the country. Her mansion at 40 Basin Street featured opulent, high-end decor. She hired beautiful women and catered to wealthy, well-connected clientele. As Kate’s wealth grew, so did her power. But a troubled relationship with her longtime boyfriend brought about her downfall. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Norm pulled from: Asbury, Herbert. BONUS 31: Uncovering the World Erotic Art Museum

Warning: This episode is about the creation of the World Erotic Art Museum. In the video version, we include several images of erotic art. If that’s not your thing…. CLOSE YOUR EYES! When Naomi Wilzig opened the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami, people were stunned. One journalist noted that the 70-year-old grandma didn’t look like she’d *go* to an erotic art museum – let alone own one. Naomi understood their surprise. She’d gone most of her life completely unaware of erotic art. But an off-the-wall request from her son led Naomi to amass one of the world’s largest private collections. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Kristin pulled from: - The World Erotic Art Museum website - “In Miami Beach, the steamy legacy of Naomi Wilzig,” by Si Liberman for The Philadelphia Inquirer - “Naomi Wilzig, owner of the World Erotic Art Museum on Miami Beach, dies at 80,” by Howard Cohen for the Miami Herald - “At 71, erotic-art collector finally can share her passion with others,” by Jessica Gresko for the Associated Press - “Museum a climax to arts journey,” by Casey Woods for The Miami Herald - “Museum exposes the naked truth about art,” by Michele Peterson for The Toronto Star - “Siggi B. The Reimer Twins Unmask Dr. Money (Part 2)

As soon as David Reimer learned the truth, he knew what he wanted to do. He began presenting as a man. He got a new name. He started testosterone therapy. He underwent surgery. But just when it looked like he had a shot at a normal life, he discovered that Dr. John Money had been writing about him for years. Dr. Money had falsely presented David as proof that we are all born gender neutral, and that parents could choose their child’s gender identity, provided they did it early enough. David knew that what had happened to him was now happening to children all over the world. He decided to put a stop to it. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Forced Identity: The Story of David Reimer (Part 1)

When he was just seven months old, David Reimer became the victim of a botched circumcision. The accident left him without a penis. His parents, Janet and Ron Reimer, were distraught. They wondered what kind of life David would have. Experts told them that there was little to be done. But then one night, they happened to see an interview with the prominent sexologist Dr. John Money.  Dr. Money was charismatic. He was confident. He was credentialed. He had a theory that we are all born gender neutral, and that you could actually choose a child’s gender, provided you made the switch before the child turned two years old. Janet and Ron Reimer were filled with hope. They wondered if, with Dr. Money’s help, they find the solution to their son’s tragic accident.  Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…. some dude who tied a bunch of balloons to a lawn chair??? On July 2, 1982, Larry Walters got his 15 minutes of fame when he tied 42 weather balloons to a lawn chair and took flight. Armed with little more than a bottle of Coke, a pellet gun, a radio, and a bag of beef jerky, Larry rose nearly 16,000 feet in the air. Onlookers couldn’t believe their eyes.
